Brewers considering Jermaine Dye

Posted

I'm reading SoSH right now, and someone posted a Fox Sports story that said that the deal fell through because of an unspecified issue with a player from the third team (which Olney apparently says is the Brewers).

The Sox have to give him a playing time guarantee to get him to waive his no-trade, which means maybe an OF moves to another team.

Rotoworld was reporting that deal last night, and that it fell apart due to a third team balking at a player they would've had to include.

Wish there was some more info on this because I would be curious what the Brewers would get / giveup. Wily Mo Pena, is a name that is nonstop mentioned as a player the sox are shopping.

my guess to is we would be taking willy mo pena which in my opinion isn't much of an upgrade.

From Rotoworld (I didn't copy all of the post due to copyright) - hopefully this catches the Brewers-related portion:

Meanwhile, Buster Olney reported that the third team was the Brewers. RotoWorld speculated that the Red Sox may have been trying to get Derrick Turnbow from Milwaukee. The White Sox might've been eyeing Turnbow as well. Kenny Williams is also known to like Manny Parra.

I just can't find out who the Crew would have received. Anyone have ESPN insider to look at Buster Olney's column or report? Supposedly he's the one that reported that the Brewers were the third team.

It does say Hideki Okajima was in the deal somehow.

Sounded like that may have been the biggest sticking point - that Boston just isn't going to trade him. 5 ER in 51.2 IP so far this year.

But, the Red Sox needed to trade Hideki Okajima to the White Sox and complete a trade with the Brewers for Derrick Turnbow to acquire Dye because they would not move Jacoby Ellsbury or Clay Buchholz for Dye. Talks about that deal broke down, but the Soxes remain in contact. Wily Mo Pena could go from Sox to Sox if a deal were worked out.

It sounds like Pena would go to the Sox with Okajime, but I wish I knew what the Brewers were getting? Dealing Turnbow could be addition by subtraction. Better to deal him now while he still has value, as he's on the fringe of a meltdown like he had last year. He hasn't pitched as well as his 4.30 ERA, as his inherited runners ratio is terrible, and thats the type of ERA you try to replace.

I have no problem whatsoever in trading Turnbow. I would like to think we could get something better than Wily Mo Pena. Turnbow will never be a reliable guy in my opinion. He can look great or teriible you just never know. All I know is when he comes in trying to protect a one run lead I have no confidence whatsoever. How about Manny Delcarmen and Pena for Turnbow and Mench?

The problem is that truly "reliable" bullpen guys are extremely hard to come by. D-bow's generally about as "reliable" as we could hope for and as such I hope any return on him is better than Pena.

I think Dye is really being undervalued, as he has gotten hot since the break, with 7 homers and a 1.1 OPS in the last 2 1/2 weeks. His season last year is also being forgotten, with 44 homers and over 1 OPS for the entire season. As a guy that will be a type A, I believe, I like the idea of trading parts such as Gwynn, etc, if it will be enough to acquire Dye.

We are not getting Dye, the Redsox are.

If that is the case then the Sox need to part with an OF. Willy Mo Pena is the most likely IMO. Are we part of this deal? I'll believe it when I see it.

I would love a swap of Okijima for Turnbow. Wouldn't Okijima be under Brewer control for a couple of years? I don't think this would happen but he could be our future closer if he would be under Brewer control. Not to mention, our bullpen would be nasty this year down the stretch, assuming Cordero has better luck and pitches better on the road.
