The 2010 Wisconsin Spring/Summer/Fall Thread

While Spring doesnt officially start for another 2 weeks but we are getting spring weather *very* soon so I think it warrants a thread. Looks like high 40's/near 50's all next week mostly with a few exceptions to the official start of spring.

Spring starts March 1st in my book. I would have golfed today if there wasn't all this snow everywhere. Also, I finally have somewhere (outside) to smoke cigars again.

Ross, it's never too cold to smoke cigars outside. I usually have a smoke going while I shovel.

 

It is a lot nicer when the temps are pushing the mid-40s though.

Went to the driving range today, along with half the city. I love the way the snow is melting...slow, steady, and with minimal mess.

The highlight of my drive to and from work is seeing how much snow has melted at University Ridge. I got a completely new set of golf clubs during the winter (thankfully it only cost me the insurance deductable) that I've been waiting very impatiently to use...

Lots of melting going on the past few days here in Germantown. Can see certain parts of my grass now. Love it. I just hope we don't get another big snow storm that ruins it.

Yeah I also grill throughout the winter. It is not as fun as grilling in spring/summer/fall because you have to bundle up, but still enjoy doing it.

I might enjoy it more if I weren't stuck inside while my student employees are all on spring break...or if the AC in our building was available and it weren't 81 degrees in my workspace.

 

But yeah, 80 degrees in Madison, tying the record high for April 1. That's all right.

Edit: It got up to 81 in Madison, setting a new record high for April 1.

There is a line of strong to severe thunderstorms moving into the LaCrosse area. Showers and a few thunderstorms should eventually reach SE Wisconsin overnight, but they will have weakened considerably. The dew point is only 50 degrees.

There was an amazing temperature change at the Summerfest grounds today--the temperature increased 22 degrees F in 10 minutes!

It is now snowing in Madison. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning a little over 24 hours ago. Gotta love Wisconsin weather.

Potentially severe weather today. Milwaukee is under a tornado watch.

I'm not sure why they issued a tornado watch, there is very little risk of tornadoes over Southern WI. There is a risk of damaging winds/hail, especially over western WI. Madison should get hit by line of storms in the next few hours. Milwaukee will see whatever junk is leftover later this evening.

The Weather Channel is freaking out over the storms in northeast Wisconsin. Apparently that's the only severe weather going on right now.

I had trees that were nearly bent flat over in my yard. Also, from the creepy file...my son's swings were swinging in a circular pattern at the height of the storm. Crazy stuff...

According to the Green Bay news, there was a tornado near Clayton that damaged a few homes. It was probably an EF-0 or EF-1.

 

There are actually snowflakes in the forecast for Friday night. Some of the models have accumulations in the Northwoods. Milwaukee last had May snow in 1990, Madison recorded a trace on 5/12/2006.

Pretty much given the weather turns to crap on the weekends and immediately when I start classes again the weather is summer like again.

The tornado sirens just sounded in Madison, and we can't tell why. The radar shows a spot of red north/northeast of Madison, maybe clipping Madison's north side, but TV, radio and weather radio show no warnings.

 

Edit: now there's a special weather statement online and on TV indicating a strong thunderstorm near Sun Prairie moving northeast. "Funnel clouds, pea sized hail, winds greater than 30mph and brief heavy downpours are possible with this storm."

 

Siren worthy, but not warning worthy. Hmm.

I thought it was odd that the sirens went off, too. As soon as I heard them, I turned on the TV and went to Weather.gov...and nothing. 45 minutes later, the TV breaks in saying there were numerous reports of funnel clouds and a possible touchdown in Madison, but no warnings were issued (people got pictures of what clearly were funnel clouds). The NWS said they did not issue a warning because the conditions were not favorable for tornado development. It may have been the case, but there were definitely funnel clouds. It would have been nice for the TV people to have come on and said something.
