Garrett Cooper

I accidentally realized something as I was perusing stats last night that makes me re-evaluate some things involving my top 30...namely Garrett Cooper is going into my top 20 even being 24 after realizing that he leads the FSL in OPS. The climate and ballparks hold down power so much in the FSL that after Alex Blandino's promotion, Garrett Cooper holds the top OPS, even with a sub .800.

The fact he was an older college draftee in 2013 makes his status a bit more muted, but the fact he is just 2 years out of college and leading a league, any league, in OPS carries some serious weight with me.

Cooper's having a great week. 11-16 in his first four games, plus the first 5-hit game in Biloxi history.

It'll be interesting seeing how he does at AA next year (assuming that's where he ends up).

He's got me thinking he could be a solid player for sure, but a lot hinges on how much power he'll show outside of the FSL.

FSL is brutal. When I looked yesterday, no one who qualified had an OPS over .800. There are six guys who had 150+ ABs who had an OPS over .800 - but that's it. The top home run hitter has 14! It's like looking at MLB stats from 1910.

He's never posted an OBP below .330 in his minor league career.

But his power numbers are VERY weak for a first baseman.

Next year will be very telling for him, but IMHO, he needs to hit the weights bigtime this offseason.

Yeah, he didn't have good power at WI either, so I pretty much wrote him off. But his BA and OBP at the two places has me interested (and an "ok" SLG for Brevard). Perhaps he could be a Lyle Overbay type (more 2B than HR). Certainly paying attention to him now.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
