Aaron Nola is a future Ace. Being shut down by him isn't a surprise. Ace vs. Brewers #4 this is the expected outcome 66% of the time.

I don't get the fantasy some have with Davies. He's too small...there aren't many Tim Lincecums out there, and even he broke down.

I'd call it depth. I feel confident he'll consistently produce Peralta statlines without the headaches of talent failure. There are 5 in a rotation.

Davies will beat out #5 and likely even the average of #4. He's a piece that solves part of the 25man puzzle. This is by far better than throwing darts out there like the 2013 season of Hand/Figaro/Gorzellany/Burgos.

That's been the knock on Davies for his entire career. From a scouting perspective, we probably shouldn't expect much. From a stat perspective, he looks better.

 

But despite everything, Zach has exceeded expectations throughout his career. In cases like that, you just ride with the player and hope for the best. That might be pretty good, or it might not be.

 

Any responsible predictions regarding Zach's chances for success would obviously need to be tempered. But that doesn't mean that he hasn't earned his shot.

And remember that Davies is still only 23 years old. Whether he was a 6 foot 3 or the way he is, there will be a learning curve pitching in the MLB for only 40 innings so far.
