Cubs acquire Daniel Murphy from the Nationals

To answer Briggs' question about why we didn't claim Murphy to block the Cubs...come on, man. We don't have 4 million dollars to casually toss at a guy that we don't even have a roster spot for just to block a team that we have almost no shot of beating either way.

If you can't afford $4 million to add a Daniel Murphy, and block him from a team that they were 2 games back of with 5 weeks left, you might as well fold up the franchise. Clearing a roster spot? Put Thames on the DL. Murphy can play LF. Who'd you like taking AB's in Sept, Thames or Daniel Murphy?

Why didn't we claim Mccutcheon just in case the Cubs tried to get him too? Matt Adams from the Nationals?

Or, if Murphy is still so good and so valuable, why didn't any other team in the NL take a shot at him?

You simply can't run an organization that way. Yes occassionally you'll be making claims as a blocking technique but you can't put in a claim on every player who might potemtially be a useful asset to any other potential playoff team. There are roster constraints and salary constraints. In a vacuum yes we can afford 4M. Bigger picture, no, we can't afford to be a team that can throw 4 million dollars at a player we don't even want just to keep him away from a rival to reduce their chances of winning the division from 90% to 88%.

Murphy would be someone to claim - option Arcia if necessary and DFA a pitcher for the 40-man spot.

As a free-agent pick-up, if keeping Moose is not going to happen, I'd take him in an instant. He's been hurt, so he may go for a one-year "prove it" deal with a team option.

Murphy would be a perfect guy to add in 2019 if you could get him for a one year deal. Quality, left-handed bat at a position that is in flux. Of course, you want to make sure he's healthy.
