RHP Israel Puello makes his first start for Low-A Carolina and CF Arbert Cipion hits lead-off as the Mudcats rest a few young prospects. The team needs to snap a 2-game skid against Fredericksburg to get back into the series. RF Micah Bello (1.404 OPS) again leads the offense:

LHP Ethan Small (1.23 ERA in 7 1/3 innings) makes his 3rd start of the season and leading run producer 1B Jon Singleton (.884 OPS, 6 RBIs) returns to the line-up, as AAA Nashville tries to snap a 2-2 series tie against Gwinnett:

3B Weston Wilson has hit his first home run of the season, a 2-run shot to give Nashville a 3-0 lead over Gwinnett in the 3rd inning.

Israel Puello exits at 75 pitches in a 2-2 game with 1 out in the 5th inning, but with a runner on 2nd base. The Mudcats looked ready to blow it open in the 4th (based loaded with 2 outs) and 5th (1st and 3rd with 1 out), but couldn't convert. RHP Trevor Tietz comes on in relief and yields a run-scoring single, then a 2-run homer. Carolina is suddenly down 5-2.

Early in the minor league season but Devanney doesn't look like he belongs on a AA roster at least at the plate he doesn't look like he belongs.  Probably will be where he tops out.

I feel like Wilson is flying under the radar a bit. He was putting together a nice 2021 before his surgery.

It’s great to see Tyler Gillies return to official action for the first time since 2019.

Curious what’s going on with Taylor Floyd, Jonathan Davis, Kent Hasler, Freddy Zamora…

Fabulous pitching from Ethan Small, Brandon Knarr, Edwin Jimenez, Sounds’ bullpen.

By no means saying this is what it is, but it would be surprising if we were notified every time a minor leaguer was impacted by Covid protocol, and I don't believe I've read anywhere how the MiLB testing precautions now compare to MLB's.

Thank you. That’s a worthy consideration and probably better than injuries or trades for minuscule cash.

I look at Ethan Small's career stats and I just shake my head at the notion that many voters in the Brewer prospect poll had him between 7 and 11 on their prospect lists.  He didn't pitch at all officially in 2020, but reports were he was very effective at the Brewer covid roster camp that year, and his career minor league stats are off the charts.  When a guy like Small doesn't crack your top 5, either the system is loaded or he's being undervalued.  It might be a little bit of both but I'd have him at a solid 3rd or 4th and certainly no lower than 5th.  Maybe he doesn't project as a number one or two starter, but he's going to be a starter in the big leagues sooner rather than later and I think he'll be around for a long time.
