Advice from NYMets commentator, Keith Hernandez...

Posted

On holiday and could only get the NYMets audio and watch the game. Keith Hernandez made two really sharp comments. (Paraphrased)

Yelich has an open shoulder that, much like golf will cause the  club (or bat) to drag behind. This could have been why has struggled or only hitting HRs to one part of the park in 2022.

On Wiemer, he loved the "big, fast kid" but was dressing him down each time he came up to the plate. Bat is too busy, bat flattens out in the at bat, wide stance into a ridiculously long stride (he did note that he is tall but) he commented that this kid will get figured out and he will have to make adjustments to quiet the movement in the batter's box.

Thoughts?

Interesting on Yelich. With Wiemer, it's the same thing all of the scouts have been saying. And it looked to my untrained eye that last season after his promotion to AAA, his pre-pitch stuff was toned down a little bit. If that is accurate, it demonstrates that he is working on smoothing things out.

How awesome was his hard hit ground ball single between 1st and 2nd last night? He's sure fun to watch.

I sure hope he gave the Mets a lot of advice too as they were beat *checks notes* 19-0 in the last two games.

His presence reminds me of Buhner coming into SEA from NYY and having an impact even though Jay did not hit for a great avg. Joey will have an impact with his speed, his glove and that arm (like the Mets just witnessed) on days that he goes 0 for 4.

Narrator: he didnt... And they got swept.

If the Brewers don't win the division I should be banned. However, they will.

Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people love Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying "Ken Phelps. Ken Phelps."

What a weirdo dunking on brewers hitters. I've never heard BA/rock do anything like that. Those guys either speak positively on opposing players or not at all. That said, he's probably right. I doubt any one of us is more qualified to give an opinion on hitting than him. It was hard not to notice all the noise when wiemer has a bat in his hands, and what he says tracks with yelich consistently being late on fastballs. Who knows if he's truly right, but without a doubt poor broadcasting etiquette.
