On Friday night, MiLB prospect watchers had their eyes trained on Biloxi, and for good reason, as a couple of 19-year-old top players faced off. Technically, Marlins 6'8" RHP Eury Perez pitched on the eve of his 20th birthday, but yes, officially this was a battle of teenagers on the AA level. The Brewers' Jackson Chourio and Perez each experienced highs and lows within the contest. Elsewhere, the Crew's farm experienced a win, a loss, and well, the state of North Carolina has been a bit water-logged all month.

TRANSACTIONS:

  • INF Josh VanMeter activated from AAA Nashville's 7-day injured list
  • OF Skye Bolt placed on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list
  • RHP Adrian Houser sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment

Final: Norfolk (Orioles) 6, Nashville 1

Rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser danced around three baserunners in the 1st inning thanks to a double play grounder and avoided surrendering a run despite allowing a one-out ground-rule double in his 2nd and final inning. The focus of this play is Andruw Monasterio's reflexes, but for me, it's Houser's footwork, a bit of an Irish Jig vibe here:

On the small-sample bright side, RH Reliever Jake Cousins has recorded seven outs over his three outings, and all seven outs are via the strikeout. Cousins entered in the 8th inning here (HBP, K) and stranded a runner for Lucas Erceg. However in the 9th, he surrendered a walk, HR, and three line drive singles before being lifted. Shake it off, Jake, you're still critical depth for 2023.

As we await Payton Henry's DFA fate, we continue to be enamored with Brian Navarreto's spectacular defensive abilities:

Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola (Marlins) 1

As referred to in our lead paragraph, the focus here was on the respective big-hype prospects for each organization. To allow us to focus on deserving others, read this MiLB feature article which includes video of all three Eury Perez - Jackson Chourio at-bats.

Chourio vs. Eury matchup lives up to hype

RHP Christian Mejias won't turn 24 years old until next month, yet he's a veteran of seven minor league seasons in the Astros' system (OK, six - darn you, 2020). This season is his first taste of AA, and his experience at High-A includes only 30 innings of 8.01 ERA ball last summer. Only 27 of Mejias' 71 professional appearances have been starts. So the shiny line in this game (5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 8 K) sure was pretty!

The bottom four in the order (Wes Clarke, Felix Valerio, Carlos Rodriguez, Freddy Zamora) combined to reach base nine times, nice!

Third baseman Tyler Black (sweet to type "third baseman" each game) has reached base eight times (2 H, 5 BB, 1 HBP). And he's 6-for-6 in SB attempts! Stay aggressive, but stay healthy, too!

Speaking of aggressive baserunning - wheels!

As of post time here Saturday AM, the Shuckers pre-game interview archive page features the latest entry, RHP Justin Jarvis, coming of a dazzling effort.

Going back one night, we're lucky Biloxi has two TV outlets that often provide home game footage. Check out a sweet package from Thursday night.

Already excited that RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez gets the start tonight for the Shuckers at 6:05 Central, quickly has become a "must-see" attraction. With Freddy Peralta and the big-league club kicking off at 3:00 PM, there is a nice opportunity to flip over to the Shuckers immediately after.

Final: Wisconsin 5, Peoria (Cardinals) 2

When he was drafted, Mr. Moore was Robert. All through the Australian Winter League season, Mr. Moore was Bob. And now, he's apparently Rob. Help us out, young man!

This is the thing about high school draft picks. Joe Gray, Jr. is now playing in his 6th organizational season. In a crowded top-end organizational outfield, I'm all for Joe having a huge bounce-back campaign and building big trade value for this summer or next offseason, where we can then root for him to succeed wherever he may land. There's more than one way a club can benefit from big-time on-the-field production.

Love to see the nine K's vs. one walk (OK, two HBP's, an often-glossed-over box score notation) for RHP's Cameron Wagoner, Max Lazar and Bo Bowman. Bowman's flowing locks, as you just watched, are targeted for charitable donation at some point in 2023.

Any word on why we are not seeing Cam Devanney? I saw he was on a 7 day IL at the beginning of the year, but there are not any notes on what happened or when he might be back.

Also, is anyone concerned about Chourio’s Huira like output?. Soo many strike outs.

Not sure about Devanney, but I'm not worried about Chourio's strikeouts... yet. I read some scouting thing somewhere that really has stuck with me. They mentioned that good young hitters are rewarded for swinging a lot, and that they don't necessarily learn swing discipline because they've never needed to. Even in last night's game after twice striking out on Perez's breaking balls, he comes back and homers on a hanger. I expect that as he climbs the ladder, he will learn that he can't swing at breaking balls in MLB because they rarely hang them... or I certainly hope so.

In addition, he covers the outside of the zone amazingly.

His first strikeout was on a 98 mph heater up and away not a breaking ball.
