What players are eligible for the rule 5 draft this year? Who will need to be protected.? Who could/should be included in trade proposals since we may not protect them anyway?

First of all, welcome, kelsch!

I have this information and will be working on posting both the "Qualifies for Rule 5 Protection" and "Minor League Free Agency Qualifier" lists very soon, perhaps as early as tonight.

I'd like to then follow-up in article format, but I realize the raw lists also have value and spur discussion here.

Don't want to have any article spoilers, but I have 1 player we must protect and 6 maybes on my short list.  However, we should have plenty of 40 man roster space to protect the key players.

I was trying to guess who you were talking about. The lock is obvious, and I think I might have five of the maybes (one triple-A pitcher, two triple-A hitters, two double-A hitters) but I’m not sure.

I will say there is one guy who would have been on the list who, depending on how the rest of the season goes, I probably will be advocating taking in the Rule 5 draft if he doesn’t get protected (No, not that one. Well, yah, that one too, but not as much.)

Antoine Kelly?

That was who I was referring to with the “No, not that one” line.

Hmm...Gus Varland?

While it isn’t quite Clancyphile with Brent Suter, I will admit there might be a little of that going on since I think I gave him every point he ever got on the prospect polls. That being said, given how he ended last season and then looked in spring training, the only reasons Evan Reifert isn’t a lock is that he has missed most of this year with an injury and that the Rays seem to have a perpetual 40-man roster crunch.

Yeah I totally forgot about him. Remember he dominated in Arizona last fall. Just dealing with a bunch of injuries I take it?

Any luck? Hoping to see this prior to the trade deadline

Now down to five Maybe's with the trade to acquire Canha.  No triple A pitchers (anymore), two AAA hitters is correct, one AA hitter, then I have two in A+.  The high A guys are highly unlikely to be picked but I'm very high on them.

This thread has a list of both who was rule 5 eligible after last season and, further down, two posts referring to which Brewers were set to be Rule 5 eligible after this year.

It doesn't include players who were acquired during the offseason. Excluding the upcoming minor league free agents, the most prominent addition to the list is probably the guy the Brewers got in the minor league phase of last year's rule 5 draft, Isaac Collins.

Yah, I got cute at the last second, although stats-wise at least there is a case for the second AA hitter (assuming I'm right about who the first one is). I've got two of my top 40 (yah, the system is deep enough right now where I'm extending it out that far) eligible in high-A, but I think that a different player from that roster has a better chance of being protected given the circumstances if the Brewers promote him and his hot streak carries over to AA. I just don't think there is much risk of either being selected and having that extra option year could come in handy down the road.

Honestly, for as fun as all this talking in code is, there is a very good chance they only protect the one.
