(Very) Hopefully this is just precautionary to get him further healed up from last year's injury and getting more legs under him. Let's just imagine a world where Perez does not surpass 60 days, comes back healthy and hungry, and hits the ground running. He showed decent glimpses last season. IF he can get healthy there is still a lot of good ball in this young man.

I want to touch on a few players who appear to be in "assignment limbo", hopefully without sparking speculation. Let's see how this goes:

  • LHP Robert Gasser - likely going on injured list
  • INF Christian Arroyo - last played for AAA Worcester; may go on injured list
  • RHP Chad Patrick - last played for AAA Las Vegas; perhaps held in limbo until AAA Nashville or AA Biloxi need a starter
  • LHP Darrell Thompson - expected to be ready to go by Tuesday, after ramp-up from offseason surgery
  • OF/INF Noah Campbell - played 32 games for Nashville in 2023, but expected to commence in AA
  • RHP James Meeker - played 2 games for Nashville to end 2023 season; perhaps headed back to AA
  • LHP Adam Seminaris - played one game for Nashville to end 2023 season; perhaps headed back in AA

RHP Tanner Shears, who was selected as Milwaukee’s reliever on their MiLB Organizational All-Star Team last year, underwent successful Tommy John surgery yesterday.  He will miss the entire season and the early portion of 2025.

Oh man that's a bummer.

Tanner Shears signed in January 2023 after one indy ball season the season prior. In 41 appearances split between Carolina and Wisconsin, Shears posted gaudy marks - an ERA of 1.45, 26 hits allowed in 49.2 IP, with 77 K's.

Equally gaudy on the flip side were 42 walks and 11 hit batters in those 49.2 IP. That ERA is evident of how dominant Shears could be when in the zone.

Best wishes on the rehab. A July 2025 return, when he'd be 26 years old, would be welcome news.

I am crushed by the Shears news. So much of that peripheral data in the walks department relates to umps not knowing how to call his splitter and the catchers not quite knowing how to catch it. He is filthy. This was a big developmental year. Let's hope for an impeccable recovery and he returns even stronger.

<insert BIG sad face on this Fanatic>

Though we don't have confirmation yet on the nature of the injury, this is another tough blow.

The 22-year-old Wagoner (will turn 23 in June) really came on late in 2023, which hopefully was going to provide momentum into the coming season.

Fine article from last September here:

Cameron Wagoner ends first full pro baseball season strong at High-A Wisconsin

A whole bevy of 2023 ACL Brewers were officially assigned to the Carolina Mudcats today. To save you a long post here, I'll reference you to the official transaction page:

HERE

** Not to be missed in this shuffle is 2023/2024 Minor League FA signee David Garcia  being oddly assigned to Carolina as well. Perhaps he fills the Jose Sibrian role in 2024 OR perhaps he is helping set the table? Either way, the 24-year-old played 42 games for the Rangers Double-A affiliate in 2023. Any intel on this move would be appreciated @ARobsBrewCrew.

I will look more into it, but my expectation is that if Quero goes on the shelf for any amount of time, Clarke will move up to AAA and Garcia will head to Biloxi (Garcia will also help with the running game in Biloxi as someone mentioned could be a problem there in another thread).  If that is not the case, I believe Alejandro Rodriguez will head back to the ACL when play begins and Garcia will move up to Wisconsin while Edgardo Ordonez takes his place in Carolina.

Confirms that Yo! Rodriguez will skip Arizona Complex League.

Brewers sign 18-year-old RHP Justin Lugo out of the Dominican Republic, assigned to DSL 1.

International signings at this time of year tend to be of the $10,000 nature, though it's possible the Brewers pool still has more significant dollars remaining. Given that Lugo is already 18 and is inking his contract three months after the opening of the signing period somewhat confirms the smaller bonus.

  • LHP Darrell Thompson activated by AAA Nashville (presumably fully recovered from offseason sports hernia surgery)
  • OF Yhoswar Garcia signed by the Brewers and assigned to Low-A Carolina

22-year old speedster Garcia was in the Phillies organization for four years, including putting up a .613 OPS with 29 stolen bases in just 146 PAs at Low-A Clearwater in 2022 before a knee injury slowed him down and he spent 2023 back in FCL Rookie ball (unimpressive .624 OPS in 151 PAs with 11 SBs).

Nice mini-article find on Garcia from damuelle here.

Unfortunately, it is one of those times during the year that is my least favorite for the transaction thread.  RHP Kevin Briceno was released today and I fear that more moves will be announced in the near future.

That's a puzzler purely from a statistical standpoint.
