Articles to profiles?

Posted

Would it be possible to add articles which feature players to be added to the player profile pages here? We already find most of those articles from around the country in the article crawler. I know that it would make it a lot easier to research a specific player. For example articles written about Manny Parra could be pinned to his profile, so that way everyone could read all of his background information, etc...

If this isn't possible that is cool, it is just a thought... I wouldn't want it to be a burden on anyone though.

That's a really good idea... it would be something like Patrick currently does for the draft. Definitely something to consider and add to a "future features" list.

Right now i'm doing a big re-write of most of the "guts" of Brewerfan. After that's all done, I should be able to add new features easier than I have previously, and this will be one of them that I add.

One problem with something like that is that more and more newspaper article links go dead very quickly now (or to paid archives). So how you would link something like that to a cut-and-paste procedure would be difficult.

We currently try to keep non-game stories (meaning player profile articles) within the various "Your" threads (Your 2004 Indians, Stars, Mavs, Snappers, etc.).

Beyond that, could be tricky to avoid the frustrating obsolete links.

I guess the moderators could handle that, are you available from 3am to 4am every morning Jim to check the links? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Couldn't you maybe copy the articles into a pdf file and attach that to the player profile? That would seem to be easier to use then just links to websites. It would also allow for archiving of the info.

Broken links do indeed suck, and that would be a problem. However, if people just emailed when there was a broken link or posted it somewhere on the message boards, I don't think it would be a big problem. The other thing we could try to do is get permission for some of the articles to be reposted online (with full credit to the author/source of course). I would think that some of the really small town newspapers wouldn't mind that at all, and they are usually the ones with the best player profiles.

On a related note, hopefully we can "rescue" some of the lost links. Between Lexis, Google's Cache, and the Wayback Machine, a lot of stuff is probably still archived somewhere. MassBrew, if you're keeping a list of the articles that get lost as you find them, I'd be happy to see what I can do to track them down.

Anyway, just my $.02. There is so much information on these message boards that it would be great to organize and share it more effectively with the "average Joe" who comes across the site from Google or elsewhere.
