Jesus Chirinos got the biggest hit in Wisconsin’s victory. Yorman Galindez struck out 10, but Carolina was swept. Biloxi will regret stranding a village and Nashville also fell on Sunday.

For the week, Wisconsin (5-1) and Nashville (4-2) were victorious in their respective series, while Biloxi (2-4) and Carolina (1-5) both lost ground.

Transactions:

  • RHP Evan McKendry reinstated by AAA Nashville from 7-day injured list
  • RHP Blake Holub assigned to AA Biloxi to AAA Nashville

Final: Jacksonville 7, Nashville 3
Box Score and Game Log

A bunt single to open the game is probably not how RHP Evan McKendry (1/3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) envisioned his return from an injury suffered on April 11, but that’s how this game started. McKendry fired strikes (16 of 22 pitches) and Jacksonville was happy to send them back out for three more singles, with Evan retiring just one of five batters faced. Hopefully he recovers well from this outing and can go deeper next week.

RHP Tyler Woessner unfortunately wasn’t much sharper on 4 days’ rest, allowing 9 baserunners while covering 3 2/3 innings, although he worked around most of the traffic: 2 R (1 ER), 5 H, 4 BB, 1 WP, 1 K.

Three errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch didn’t help Nashville’s comeback attempt, although 2B Vinny Capra homered in the 5th inning to briefly cut the deficit to 2-1. Capra remains on the 40-man MLB roster and has hit safely in 10 of his past 11 games to lift his season AVG to .262 and OPS to .734.

Sounds’ Extras:

  • While LHP Darrell Thompson and RHP Kevin Herget both did well in brief appearances: combined 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K, stranding three inherited runners, 40-man MLB roster man RHP Taylor Clarke (2 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K) will be hoping for better outings as he tries to earn a recall to the Show.
  • Left fielder Isaac Collins (2-for-4, triple, RBI) and SS Yonny Hernandez (2-for-3) contributed four of the Sounds’ seven hits, though the team stranded only 4 baserunners (vs. 13 for the Jumbo Shrimp).
  • RHP Enoli Paredes may have had a rare difficult inning (1 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks), but hitting 98.3mph and 97.6mph on the radar gun is still encouraging.

Next week’s outlook: Nashville (22-23) returns home to take on White Sox affiliate Charlotte (19-25), with RHP Tobias Myers (1.45 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 11.6 K/9 in 18 2/3 AAA IP) scheduled to start the first game of the series on Tuesday.

Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: Mississippi 7, Biloxi 3
Box Score and Game Log

Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Fall in Series Finale to M-Braves

Although they fell behind 5-0 in the 1st inning, the Shuckers will still feel like they should have been more competitive in this game and possibly evened the series 3-3, ultimately outhitting the Braves but going 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position to strand 12 baserunners (vs. only 6 LOB for Mississippi).

As per the game link, RHP TJ Shook had a rare poor outing (2/3 IP – his shortest stint in four years and 71 games of minor league baseball), but RHPs Nick Merkel and Sam Gardner truly stepped up: combined 5 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 8 Ks.

Biloxi failed to convert 1st-and-3rd opportunities with nobody out in the 1st inning and one out in the 3rd inning, but still managed to narrow the score to 5-3 by the 5th inning. They then had center fielder Lamar Sparks on 2nd base to open the 6th inning (infield single, error) but failed to move him around before Mississippi expanded their lead one frame later.

We’ll take any road highlights we can come by (see more at the Biloxi Twitter/X feed):

Shuckers’ Extras:

  • The Southern League is generally low-scoring in 2024, which may have contributed to Biloxi attempting some on-base trickery in the top of the 1st inning: attempt to steal second base, but grab a steal of home instead. It backfired, however, with SS Eric Brown Jr. thrown out at home. Brown did notch a double and a stolen base later in the game, but was 1-for-5 on the day.
  • RHP Justin Yeager continues to signal his readiness for a shot at AAA ball: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K to lower his season ERA to 1.98. He also has seven saves and a WHIP of 0.95 in 13 2/3 innings pitched in 2024.
  • Every Shucker in the lineup reached base – eight via a hit and one via walk, with two hits each by 1B Mike Boeve (2-for-5, run) and right fielder Noah Campbell (2-for-3, walk, 2 RBIs).

Next week’s outlook: The Shuckers (18-21) come back home to face White Sox affiliate Birmingham (24-14). Any of injury-returnee LHP Adam Seminaris, RHP Bradley Blalock or LHP Nate Peterson could get the call to start the first game of the series on Tuesday.

Be sure to enjoy the YouTube highlights compiled by the Wisconsin media team:

And don’t forget the whopping 31-minute Mehring-Lobner podcast with comments from DL Hall, Victor Estevez and Jesus Chirinos.

A crowd of 4,565 came out on a lovely Sunday to watch rehabbing LHP Hall and the Timber Rattlers. Hall was scheduled to throw only one inning in his first appearance since April 20th and needed only 11 pitches (8 strikes) to quickly dispatch the Sky Carp: ground out, infield line out, strike out swinging. He’s expected to make his next rehab appearance with AAA Nashville.

A day after his walk-off heroics, DH Jesus Chirinos (1-for-2, double, walk, 2 RBIs) delivered the biggest hit of the game once again, this time a 2-out, 2-run double in the 2nd inning to stake RHP Edwin Jimenez (6 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks) to a 2-0 lead. Chirinos also walked to open the Timber Rattlers’ 3-run 5th inning.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

  • Jimenez was solid outside of a difficult start to the 6th inning (line out, single, wild pitch, walk, 3-run homer on a 1-2 pitch).
  • Center fielder Dylan O’Rae and 1B Tayden Hall both doubled, reached base twice and scored a run.
  • Baseball magnet 3B Luke Adams was hit-by-pitch for the 14th time in 32 games played, staying on course to surpass his total of 21 from last season. However, he was then picked off base right before Tayden’s double.
  • RHP Chase Costello threw a 1-2-3 inning and RHP Craig Yoho (0.53 season ERA) was once again unhittable, although Yoho threw 22 pitches (11 strikes) and walked one.

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (26-13) will take the 4 ½ hour drive down to South Bend (14-25) to face the Cubs’ affiliate, with K-Machine LHP Mark Manfredi (3.57 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 15.1 K/9 in 22 2/3 IP) scheduled to start the opening game of the series.

Game One Final: Down East 3, Carolina 2 (in 9 innings)
Box Score and Game Log
Game Two Final: Down East 7, Carolina 2 (in 7 innings)
Box Score and Game Log

Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Mudcats swept in Sunday Doubleheader

Losing the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader was a tough pill to swallow, squandering RHP Yorman Galindez’s (4 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 10 Ks) solid start by going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position while stranding nine baserunners. Neither team recorded an extra-base hit in the opening game, but Carolina out-hit the Wood Ducks six to three, including two from 3B Juan Baez (2-for-4, SB, run).

Sometimes the little things truly do cost you. In this case, it wasn’t the Mudcats’ two errors (thankfully), but rather ghost runner Blayberg Diaz being caught on the basepaths to open the 9th inning. Down East managed to then bring their Manfred Man home via a stolen base and sacrifice fly.

Regardless of the final score, the second game was also tight, tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 6th inning before Down East put the game away with a 5-run frame. Starting RHP Josh Timmerman conceded three doubles in a rather typical performance: 4 1/3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K – season ERA of 4.24.

Mudcats’ Extras:

  • RHPs Jeferson Figueroa, Bayden Root and Harrison Durow were solid behind Galindez, combining on 4 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks, with Durow unfortunately having to wear the loss.
  • In the second game, right fielder Luis Castillo was arguably Carolina’s top performer, collecting a double, walk, stolen base and an outfield assist. RHPs Jeison Pena and Blake Whiting did not have good days, combining on 1 2/3 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 1 K.
  • After sitting out the opening game, center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (1-for-4) and SS Cooper Pratt (1-for-2, walk) were both in the lineup for the nightcap.

Next week’s outlook: Carolina (23-14) will host Cubs’ affiliate Myrtle Beach (16-22), with either RHP Jesus Rivero or RHP Manuel Rodriguez likely to start Game One of the series.

We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. On Monday, the Brewers play at the Miami Marlins, while the ACL Brewers (3-8) host the ACL Guardians (4-7).

Do we have any kind of scouting report on Galindez? Dude likes the strikeout.

Fastball is sitting in the mid-90's this year, he had a really good curveball last year but that was pretty much it for secondaries. His slider has made huge strides and he's now mixing the breaking balls in a ton, at different speeds and shapes, along with that mid-90's velo. He's having a legit breakout season in my opinion.
