I was listening to the radio and a former gm (don't remember sorry) brought up that it is time to allow teams to trade draft picks. I know that the no trading picks goes back to 1965 out of fear that teams would just sell picks.

I thought this would be a good discussion. It would have been nice to trade down from like 17 to the later 20 to get Payne and pick up like a 3rd round pick.

I am I'm favor of trading picks for picks and prospects (non 40 man roster players). I don't really see the down side and I think there could be some really cool deals to discuss. I think allowing picks for stars might get crazy and worsen some of the tanking issues.

With the recent CBA I am not sure the tanking issues are really that big of a problem.  For example the White Sox will have the worst record in MLB and won't be able to pick any higher than 10th in next years draft.  So it is possible the White Sox will have the worst record in MLB and pick 18th in the draft though that is extremely unlikely.  But this resets next year and they could get the #1 pick in 2026 but then would be ineligible to pick in the top 9 again the following season.

I am not really concerned about tanking with the new rules right now.  I think you could lock the top 10 picks so they can't be traded if there are any concerns with tanking.  I kind of like the NBA rules on draft picks.  So something like the top 10 are locked and something similar to the NBA in trading draft picks.  Something like teams can only trade their current years picks and can't trade future picks.

I wouldn't want to see it restricted where you can't trade a pick for a player on another teams 40 man roster.  I think that limits it too much and hurts more than it helps.  I believe if you don't allow future draft picks to be traded then it wouldn't be all that bad for a team trading a player on its 40-man roster for a draft pick.

I think the trick will be the dollar amount associated with each pick.  A team may not willingly want to lose slot value with trades, so pick for pick may not work as well - except maybe rounds 3-10 where the pick by pick value has less variance. But I do like the idea but the $ will make it less likely that teams will do it a lot

Trades for players exists but only competitive balance picks right now - so maybe allowing it for some trades but cap the picks you can trade (like 2-3 max) to make I easier to monitor.

That's the first thing I thought of...and then I thought, 'well, we've got AI, surely we can figure out the difference in bonus pool on the fly,' but...the real issue would be the scouts who get these numbers and who figure it out like the '23 Brewers front office, whose greatness  should go down with the likes of the '27 Yankees, the '96 Bulls, the...'72 Dolphins or the '24 Penn State Wrestling team(I know I'm losing the crowd here)....nearly unprecedented in their greatness.

So...that'd be the bigger issue. Figuring out down to 39 dollars or whatever the final number was, how much money will need to be spent. And I'm sure they'd have been right on that number this year, but one HS Pitcher was...apparently just too dead set on going to College.
