I personally had him #20 in the last vote we did, but the main factors holding him back for those that don’t have him that high would be…

1) depth of the system. last balloting there were 15 more or less consensus guys who showed up on at least 24 of the 27 ballots and KC Hunt was on 21 of the 27 at #16.

2) he’s been old for his level every step of the way and is at the bottom of the defensive spectrum as a 1B prospect.

3) outside of his last 200 PAs of 2024 his production has always been more good than OMG WHA HAPPEND so there’s still some question if it was just a hot streak to end the year or if Ernesto figured something out that unlocked a new talent level

The thing that knocks Martinez down is his age, he will be 26 in a few months and hasn't hit AAA. Agreed him not being in our top 30 is crazy. I think someone could say he has 55 skills across the board with a 45/50 hit tool. 6'6' 250 1st baseman that can be 20/20, play OF and potential gold glove 1B don't come around often (if ever) but a ton of scouts see 25 in AA and kind of dismiss the prospect value massively. I personally have EMJ in the 28-31 range, if he was 2 year younger he is an easy top 10-15 prospect.

That is impressive to have still 5 top-100 prospects again (and 3 top 5 prospects) and Payne (in the consensus top 7 around here) could also add his name to that list if he were to have success at low-A this year.
