I completely understand that signing a player like Bregman is/was a pipe dream for our team. Probably always will be. The main player I'm very disappointed that they didn't sign, was Dejong. Especially after he was signed for only $1M. He's obviously not the player he used to be, but I think his veteran presence alone, could've helped wonders with our young roster. Plus, one thing he can still do, is hit HR's and knock runs in, to replace the offense we lost when Adames left. Since we're hearing about the real possibility of Frelick playing some 3rd base, I'm fairly certain that they must not feel comfortable with Black playing there. Imo, there's no valid reason why they shouldn't have signed Dejong.

You really have to lean into veteran leadership (which I don't know if he even has a reputation as a good teammate, etc.) and the HR and RBI counting stats to make a case for DeJong because he has absolutely nothing else.

He's pretty redundant with the guys we already have while also not having any upside at his age. I wouldn't have been upset if they signed him for $1M, but even at that price he's not someone to be disappointed that they didn't get. I think they just would rather leave that roster spot open for a young player to develop than have him take it. His BA, OBP, and K% numbers are absolutely brutal, that may not be the best example for our young guys.

Even with his RBI numbers, he's been bad to awful with runners on base and in scoring position.

While I like DeJong I can see why the Brewers didn't offer him a contract.  Some of his advanced stats show he is in decline.  He hit 24 HR's last year but I wouldn't expect that again probably something closer to 10-15 with a .200 average.  OPS wise DeJong was just barely better than Turang.

I wouldn't have minded adding DeJong but also not adding him I am fine with.  DeJong is just a guy and nothing more.

You have no reason to not think he's known to be a good teammate either. So since you don't know if he is or isn't, you apparently just choose to assume he's not? Really? Nothing like treating someone guilty of being something, until they prove themselves innocent. Jeeesh. That's the exact opposite of how it's supposed to be. I have a feeling if we find out he actually is a good leader and teammate, you'd still refuse to believe it.  Like many people nowadays, it's obvious you put too much stock into analytics. They're not to tell all, end all.

I am not assuming it one way or another, that was the point of what I said.

With all the talk the past couple days about McMahon, there are a couple free agents still out there that can be had without having to trade away anyone. The obvious one is Jose Iglesias, but I wouldn't be opposed to taking a flyer on Whit Merrifield for a year at the right price as well.

He has pretty even splits while putting in 54 games at 2B, 25 games in LF, and 13 games at 3B last year, so he would add some flexibility and ability to mix and match.

Iglesias (35) and Merrifield (36) have a few more years on them than McMahon (30), but they're likely available on one year deals for less than McMahon (especially Merrifield) as well, which may be preferable while we see which of our younger players develop.

Overall, I think I'd see what happens with Iglesias before making a deal for McMahon, and then if there's not a deal that makes sense with him, throw a similar offer out to Merrifield as we did with Canha/Margot in case none of the guys currently on the roster are able to secure a spot.
