Story on "Atlanta News First":

Even Cavemen knew you don't poop where you drink yet the city of Calhoun, Georgia has contaminated its own drinking water by dumping biosolids called sludge application fields which contain high levels of PFAS or "forever chemicals" onto its own land near its drinking water sources. This practice has resulted in high levels of PFAS being detected in the city's own drinking water and one of the highest cancer rates in the country.

PFAs are everywhere. It's just taken a long time to start testing for them. At low enough detection limits.

Lots of treatment plants spread their sludge after treatment. Milorganite is also a potential source. Usually the contaminants will be absorbed along the way from ground surface to the water table, but unfortunately PFAs don't break down easily. Fortunately, groundwater used for drinking water in SE Wisconsin is deep and covered with glacial clay so it takes decades for PFAs to get there. Other parts of the state aren't so lucky
