It's the right move. Stearns has made a lot of changes to many aspects of the organization, including player development in the minors, scouting, analytics (And more than that, building up and integrating that capacity) ,the coaching staff etc. Things that take time to evaluate. Completely changing course yet again would just delay everything further. All the while they'd still be paying Stearns.

You also have to factor in what in the Mets struggles this year are about bad decisions Stearns made (And there are certainly those), but also about how even decisions that made sense at the time have turned out far worse than expected. Like was Bichette at 3B, a square peg in a round hole, the best way to spend that money? Probably not. But was there any reason to think that the 28 year old with a career 122 wRC+ prior to this year would be as bad as he has been? No. They signed some players with injury histories which is a risk, but have the position player injuries (Including to Soto and Lindor, their two big stars who don't have that kind of injury history) also been more than expected? Yes.

Can go over all kinds of moves made or not made, but either way I think it's fair to say that while they aren't good, they are also not worst-team-in-baseball levels of bad. At the very least, put out this kind of message now, and give it at the very least to the offseason before even thinking about a change. If things countinue in the wrong direction, it might be that firing Stearns is the right move, it's just that it's premature to do it now.

How it started:

Brewers are clearly trading for the future and the Mets are going for it this year!

  • Mets Receive: RHP Freddy Peralta, RHP Tobias Myers.
  • Brewers Receive: Jett Williams (Infielder/Outfielder, Mets' No. 3 prospect at the time) and Brandon Sproat (RHP, Mets' No. 5 prospect)

How its going:

  • Brewers 52-31
    • Sproat: -0.2 WAR, 5.28 ERA
  • Mets 36-50
    • Peralta: +0.2 WAR, 4.53 ERA
    • Meyers: -0.7 WAR, 6.21 ERA

I wonder how much it would cost to get Meyers or Peralta back?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

It doesn't matter how many stars a team has. Without depth they're going to struggle to be consistently good. I think Stearns will build the depth if given enough time. His major problem is fans thought he was the savior that was going to turn things around right away. While there may be some that can build quickly through free agency Stearns time as GM never demonstrated he was one of them. He made his name by building depth through a strong draft and develop model and finding valuable players others missed. If given the time and leeway to do what he does best it can work there. For that to happen the team and fans are going to have to shift how they view building a winning team with him as the GM.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
