what are the chances that branyon will sign with the brewers to be the starting 3b in 2005?? What is the contract situation? I sure as hell hope that yost is going to finally get over wes helms.

We all hated the 2005 portion of Wes Helms' contract -- congrats to your agent, Wes, he set you up for life. Enjoy counting your $2.7 million for next year this off-season.

As long as Yost is the manager, and Helm is under contract, Helms will start. Sad but true.

I'm watching on MLB.TV and the Florida guys say 458, but they also said they think it was longer.

 

Ouch, Brady needs to learn how to steal a base.

 

Florida announcers on Branyan homer: "There was absolutely no way that was 458 feet. If they said 558 feet, that would have been more plausible."

I'm glad we got Branyan, maybe he can give us the much needed run support our pitchers deserve. Also, nice little play by him at 3rd to gun out Luis Castillo on the groundout.

Very disappointed in Powell's answer.

 

That was a cop out, plain and simple. I know he's GOT to be a *bit* of a homer, but c'mon.

He said made two points:

 

1. It's convenient to rest Branyan against lefties since he needs to rest his wrist.

 

2. He downplayed his career stats against lefties, saying that No lefties do well against Willis.

 

Personally, I think he's response was a bit weak. I can appreciate him not starting against Willis, but it's obvious Yost isn't going to start him against ANY lefties

pogo, he said that because of his wrist, they didn't want him playing every day, and that it was easier to bench him against lefties, and also he said "What lefties? Dontrelle Willis is tough on ANY lefty!"

 

Yet Ned still felt compelled to start Pods against him.

 

And Powell completely glossed over the fact that Branyan's career OPS vs. Lefties is .200+ pts. higher than his career OPS vs. righties.

I think the real reason a lot of worthy players like Branyan won't start (no matter who it's against), is because of Wes Helms' fat contract. If they don't start him, management looks really dumb. I'm all for Branyan being the everyday guy, and right now, his defense is looking a lot better than Helms'!

Starting guys because of contracts when an obviously better option exists is simply stupid, ********, and any other synonym for dumb you want to use.

 

When I'm at work, and I make a mistake, the best thing to do is to admit to myself that I made a mistake, and take steps to correct it, and/or make sure it doesn't happen again.

 

When management (Yost) makes a decision to play a guy who was mistakenly given a big contract, they COMPOUND the problem by playing him more, justifying that they HAVE to play him because of his contract, all for the sake of not admitting they ****** up. If you ask me, that's an almost childish mindset.

I agree completely. It's a terrible thing when Yost can't admit his mistakes so he regularly sends out guys like Helms who can't produce offensively and who play shoddy defense. Branyan is obviously better qualified and would give the team some run support which is always needed in any form, and therefore I'm all for starting Branyan everyday. Just a matter of who has the egg on their face and takes the blame for wanting to play Helms day in and day out.
