Scouting Report
Jeferson Quero signed out of Venezuela in 2019 for $200,000. He quickly established himself as one of the more impressive international signings playing in the Arizona Complex League in 2021, and is considered among the top international catchers from his class. After a breakout year Quero did have a setback when he required surgery for a separated left shoulder following the season.
Quero’s defensive ability is extremely advanced considering his age. He’s an athletic standout behind the plate and possesses a plus arm. He’s an agile catcher that’s credited with advanced receiving skills and quick pop times. His build gives the appearance that he’s up to the challenge of grinding through a season as an everyday catcher. Quero plays the game with high energy and is a vocal leader among his peers.
If you thought Quero was a glove-only catcher, think again. He has shown an advanced hit tool and maintains impressive contact rates. He also has some pop in his bat that may further actualize as he ages.
Teenage catchers are among the highest risk profile in all of professional baseball, but Quero has the tools to develop into a major league catcher. As Quero moves up from the lower levels it may be worth noting he’ll actually be Rule 5 eligible by December of 2023.
