  1. I realize people may disagree with and even hate some of his strategy & managerial decisions... but if there's anything Roenicke isn't, it's stupid/a doofus/etc. He's a bright guy, and I hate seeing that kind of hyperbole thrown around after a bad run of results. I don't love or hate him as a manager, but I'd like to see these kinds of discussions kept in reality. Analyze his in-game strategy, player/ego management, lineup construction, etc. But don't devolve this into "He's a moron!" It's just not true. I liked Macha's in-game management. If we could somehow combine his strategy with Roenicke's personality, I'd be happy. I actually don't think there are more than a small handful of managers currently working in MLB that fit what I'd like to see in one. Joe Girardi is honestly the only I can think of, off-hand.
  2. Sounds Fall Again, 5-1 Round Rock's Five-Run Inning The Difference Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/i5iePyN.jpg Johnny Hellweg, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) AUDIO: Hunter Morris' RBI-Single ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds dropped game three to the Round Rock Express Sunday afternoon at Dell Diamond, unable to recover from a five-run fourth inning put up by the home team. The 5-1 loss is Nashville's ninth consecutive and 11th road loss in a row. After making quick work of the Express through the first three innings, starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg (1-4) ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing Round Rock five runs. The 6-foot-9 hurler loaded the bases before recording the first out on a double play. The two-out play tied the game for Round Rock, scoring Jurickson Profar from third and moving Chris McGuiness to third. A wild pitch from Hellweg plated the go-ahead run for Round Rock and a double from Greg Miclat scored two runs to end Hellweg's day at 75 pitches. Reliever Kyle Heckathorn entered to close the inning, but not before Miclat scored on Eli Whiteside's base hit to make it 5-1 in favor of the Express. Hellweg took the loss, his fourth, charged with all five runs on three hits through 3 2/3 innings of work. He fanned two and walked five, marking the most free bases offered in a game by a Sounds pitcher this season. Four of the five walks came in the fourth inning. Sounds relievers worked a clean second half of the game as Heckathorn went 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run while striking out four. Jesus Sanchez followed up with two scoreless frames of his own, limiting the Express to one hit and fanning two. Nashville plated the first run of the game off the bat of Hunter Morris to grab the 1-0 lead in the second inning. The shallow single landed just fair in left field to drive in Sean Halton, who tripled to the corner in right to reach base. Caleb Gindl, Blake Davis and Stephen Parker recorded Nashville's only other hits, each with a single. The base knock by Parker in the eighth inning extended the infielder's hit streak to eight games, his longest of the year, batting .281 (9-for-32) in that time. Also of note, the Sounds second baseman Scooter Gennett drew a walk in his final at-bat of the day to allow the 23-year-old to reach base safely in all 24 of his starts this season. Notching the win for Round Rock was reliever Richard Bleier (1-1), who limited Nashville to one hit through 3 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. The Sounds wrap their second road trip with the series finale against Round Rock on Monday for a midday 12:05 start, looking to avoid going 0-for-8 on the trip. Nashville sends RHP Tyler Thornburg (0-3, 5.59) to the hill against Round Rock's RHP Josh Lindblom (4-0, 1.42). 4. 4th inning has not started well for Hellweg -- single, balk, walk, walk.
  5. Melodramatic much? I was discussing why he gets a #2 or 3 upside label instead of #1. No idea where you got the magical "AAAA" label. I used Halladay as an example because he displayed better command as a minor leaguer than Peralta has so far. The only time in the minors that Halladay was close to Peralta's BB/9 rate was when Roy was a 20 & 21-yo at AAA (Peralta was at A & A+ at those ages). Sure, Wily could turn the corner & really harness his mechanics, but he's a long shot to do that, hence why he doesn't get the #1 upside label. And fwiw I am a big Peralta fan. I love his repertoire, and look forward to watching his starts more than anyone not named Gallardo. His stuff is absolutely good enough for a #1, I don't think there's much question about that.
  6. It wouldnt hurt to find out if he can. The team has to start looking at other options. If Gennett flops then nothing changes. Weeks at this point is basically doing nothing. The counterpoint is to not waste service time on Gennett in a season in which he's not going to be the difference between making & missing the postseason.
  7. I was about to take to Twitter to ask Jeff Hem how Hellweg's stuff has been looking today. Thankfully, Adam McCalvy had already taken care of that update with a retweet: (Cole covers/blogs the Rangers' MiLB system)
  8. Sean Halton tripled with one out in the top of the 2nd, and was driven in on Hunter Morris's RBI single to put the Sounds up 1-0 early. Johnny Hellweg perfect through two innings with a pair of Ks.
  9. It's hesitance to believe that he's suddenly going to develop the command of a Halladay-in-his-prime, or whatever other bona fide MLB #1 you want to use as an example. The stuff is undeniably #1-caliber. But his command has been lacking at every level, so it's a bit much to say that he's realistically got a shot at turning into a MLB #1. If he winds up as a legit #2 type, I'll be over the moon. He doesn't seem to repeat his mechanics very consistently, and that leads to a lot of command issues.
  10. You don't read that here. What gets discussed here is how his lack of power won't likely play well in the bigs. I can't recall the last post I read on BF's MiLB forum that doubted his hit tool.
  11. Sounds' Skid Continues With 8-6 Loss In Round Rock Gennett Goes 2-for-4 To Raise Average To .366 For Nashville Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/CTEtopq.jpg Scooter Gennett, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) AUDIO: Scooter Gennett RBI Double AUDIO: Caleb Gindl RBI Single ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Sounds' losing streak reached eight on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond, where Nashville lost, 8-6, to the Round Rock Express. Second baseman Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 for the Sounds to raise his average to .366. He has reached base safely in all 23 of his games this season. First baseman Hunter Morris contributed a 2-for-3 effort and third baseman Stephen Parker extended Nashville's longest active hitting streak to seven games with a single in the defeat. Express left-hander Brad Mills twirled a quality start against the Sounds and Yangervis Solarte paced a 13-hit Round Rock offensive attack with a 3-for-4 effort. The Express struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning against Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz. Catcher Robinson Chirinos connected for a solo homer to left to lead off frame, the backstop's second of the year. Solarte knocked a one-out single and stole second before advancing to third on Greg Miclat's comebacker to De La Cruz. On the play, the Nashville hurler threw to third and would have had Solarte out easily but his throw was high and pulled Parker into the air to allow Solarte to slide under the tag. Jose Felix followed with a run-scoring groundout to double the Express lead to 2-0. Round Rock tacked on three more runs in the fifth against De La Cruz to extend its advantage to 5-0. The Sounds right-hander issued consecutive one-out walks before Jurickson Profar stole third base to put runners on the corners. After Chirinos plated Profar with a groundout to third, Aaron Cunningham lined an RBI single to left to chase De La Cruz from the contest. Donovan Hand took over on the hill for the Sounds and was greeted by a two-out Solarte run-scoring double to center that pushed the Express lead to five. De La Cruz (1-4) suffered a loss for the fourth consecutive start after allowing five runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out four. After being held to only one hit through the game's first five innings, Nashville finally got onto the board against Mills in the top of the sixth. Josh Prince led off with a single to shallow left and came around to score when Gennett grounded an RBI double all the way to the wall in left-center to cut the deficit to 5-1. Mills (4-0) earned the victory with his quality start for Round Rock, holding the Sounds to two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 frames. Round Rock answered the Sounds' run with one of their own in unearned fashion in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Buchholz reached on a throwing error by Parker and later scored on a two-out Chris McGuiness single off Hand to make it a 6-1 contest. Parker's misfire snapped a 54-inning errorless stretch for Nashville fielders. Hunter Morris scored the second Nashville run of the night in the seventh when he doubled and later crossed home on catcher Dayton Buller's two-out RBI single off Express reliever Yoshinori Tateyama. The Express closed out their scoring with two runs in the seventh off reliever Johnnie Lowe, netting three straight two-out hits in the frame to stretch the lead to 8-2. Caleb Gindl and Morris netted back-to-back, two-out RBI singles off reliever Nate Robertson in the top of the eighth inning to pull the Sounds back within 8-4. The Sounds didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, adding two more runs without the benefit of a hit against Robertson. Gennett and Khris Davis contributed a pair of sacrifice flies in the frame. Veteran reliever Tim Dillard, signed earlier in the day from the independent Atlantic League, made his first appearance of the season for the Sounds and worked a scoreless eighth inning. The teams continue the series with a 1:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (1-3, 3.38) will man the bump for the Sounds and face Express right-hander Ross Wolf (0-1, 1.62). Nashville Box Rangers top prospect Jurickson Profar went 1-4 with a BB & SB, after going 1-5 with a BB in last night's series opener. Hunter Morris was bumped down to the #7 spot tonight. Iirc that's the first time he's been lower than #4 this whole season. If you believe correlation implies causation, the move lit a fire underneath him/woke him up/shook him by the scruff of the neck... etc. In short, he had a good game. 12. Gennett's hit tool is without a doubt good & his best tool, but compare his MiLB career so far to Weeks's: - Scooter: .304/.342/.416/.758 - Rickie: .289/.404/.493/.897 In almost twice the MiLB PAs, Gennett has tallied 23 HRs to Weeks's 21. Without power, almost every hitter struggles to make an impactful jump to the bigs. I would be more on Gennett's bandwagon if his defense was another plus skill, or if he were versatile enough to also cover SS & 3B. A low- to mid-.700s OPS 2B with average to below-avg. defense just doesn't have much value. As for Roache, he unquestionably has the power to play corner OF in the Show, but it'll be how he develops his hit tool that determines his future.

  14. I really enjoy this one. And, even if someone doesn't like it that much overall, imo Thomas Jane as Mantle & Barry Pepper as Maris make it worth watching on their own.
  15. Wily has the stuff to be an ace, but has struggled with command for basically his whole career... which is why most fix his upside at a #2/#3 guy. If he's able to improve his command to even a Gallardo level, then you could talk about him as a potential #1. But there are some that would say that Yo is more a #2 type, as opposed to a true #1.
  16. If you're talking about the stat RF, SoupTown, that's really a poor way to evaluate a fielder. RF rewards players that have groundball pitching staffs & punishes players whose pitchers strike out more batters. It tells you how many plays a defender made, not how good he is.
  17. Sounds Swept By RedHawks Nashville Drops Series Finale, 9-1 Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/LChe3v9.jpg Zack Kroenke, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds could not keep pace with the Oklahoma City RedHawks Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing the series finale by the score of 9-1. The loss gives the RedHawks the four-game series sweep; the first allowed by Nashville since the RedHawks did so nearly one year ago at the end of May. The Sounds got on the board first when first baseman Hunter Morris scored from third on a fielder's choice, beating out the throw to home plate from RedHawks second baseman Raoul Torrez. Morris tripled into centerfield to lead-off the inning, his first three-bagger and ninth extra-base hit of the year. The 1-0 lead, Nashville's first since a 7-1 advantage before losing in the series opener on Monday, was short-lived as the RedHawks collected three runs in bottom of the inning against Sounds starting pitcher Zach Kroenke (0-4). The lefty put runners on the corners with no outs before Jonathan Villar hit a double to make it 2-1, Oklahoma City. Villar stole third and scored on a Kroenke balk. The Sounds never answered, charging the loss to Kroenke, who was on three days' rest and finished with four runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts. The RedHawks added another run in the fifth inning with back-to-back triples into right field from Jake Elmore and Jimmy Paredes. Reliever Jesus Sanchez entered the game in between triples, but could not keep the frame clean, letting Kroenke's runner through to make it 4-1. Sanchez stayed in to pitch 1 2/3 innings for the Sounds and let up one run off the hot bat of Villar. The RedHawks' shortstop belted one of Sanchez's pitches off the foul pole in right field for a lead-off home run in the sixth inning. Villar, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs and a triple shy of the cycle. The RedHawks' biggest inning came in the seventh, putting up four runs on Sounds reliever Johnnie Lowe. Villar and Carlos Perez each produced two-run singles with the bases loaded. Lowe allowed three hits and three walks in the inning. Chris Jakubauskas and Rob Wooten combined to pitch a scoreless eighth, but Jakubauskas left the game after one strikeout due to leg discomfort on the mound. After spending the first part of the season with the parent club Milwaukee Brewers, outfielder Khris Davis made his return to Nashville, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on the night. Davis hit .310 (35-for-113) for the Sounds in 2012. The Sounds loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth on two hits and a walk, but failed to plate any runs as Davis hit into a fielder's choice to put the runner out at home and Morris grounded into a double play. The Sounds begin a new four-game series on Friday night, heading to Texas to face the Round Rock Express. RHP Mike Fiers (0-1, 0.82) gets the start for Nashville, opposite lefty Brad Mills (3-0, 2.81). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants). Nashville Box Caleb Gindl kept up his hot-hitting ways, & led the Sounds with two hits. Gindl: 2-4, 2B Morris: 1-4, 3B Stephen Parker: 1-4, 2B, RBI I'm completely bushed tonight, so I'm going to cut this part short. Not really anything you want to see in the pitching lines anyway, unfortunately. Nashville PbP Nashville loaded the bases with no one out in the 5th, but couldn't muster a single run. At the time, they only trailed 3-1... and sadly the game spun out of control afterwards: Nashville Top of the 5th -Pitching Change: C. J. But I would never even think of bringing it up. This is a non-issue for me. You're smoking on your own property.
  24. Sounds Held To Three Hits In OKC Nashville's Stephen Parker Goes Yard In 6-2 Loss Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/Iwr4S51.jpg Stephen Parker (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) ** I wonder if Mike wasn't able to make the game tonight... confusing that this photo is from Greer Stadium ** AUDIO: Stephen Parker's Solo Homer AUDIO: Sean Halton's RBI-Double OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds were held to only three hits by Oklahoma City pitchers Wednesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, while RedHawks batters put up six runs on 13 hits to win 6-2 and hand Nashville its seventh consecutive road loss. The loss gives Oklahoma City the series victory with still one game remaining. Three RedHawks pitchers combined for the three-hitter, led by starter Wes Musick (2-0), who turned in six strong innings en route to his second win of the season. The southpaw fired four strikeouts and held Nashville to one run on two hits. Relievers Eric Berger and Jason Stoffel finished out the final three innings for the 'Hawks. The majority of the action took place in the bottom of the third inning, when RedHawks batters touched Sounds starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg (0-3) for six hits, scoring four runs on four doubles. Andrew Simunic led-off with a single and scored on Che-Hsuan Lin's double down the left-field line. Catcher Carlos Perez followed with an RBI-double of his own in the next at-bat, which was his first hit at the Triple-A level. Jake Elmore and Brett Wallace produced the other two doubles of the inning to give Oklahoma City the 4-0 lead. Thornburg was charged with the loss, his third, exiting the game after four innings of work, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked two. Nashville got on the board in the fourth inning on Stephen Parker's one-out home run to right field. The jack was Parker's third of the year and ended Musick's scoreless streak at 14 innings. The RedHawks pulled to a five-run advantage in the fifth inning with a pair of two-out runs against Sounds reliever Travis Webb. Third baseman Jimmy Paredes started with a liner off Parker's glove for a single and was driven home by Wallace's single after stealing second. Jonathan Villar made it 6-1 with the team's fifth two-bagger. The five RedHawks doubles, all to left field, gave the rehabbing Jeff Bianchi plenty of work, who was making the first outfield start of his 597-game professional career. A stiff wind from left to right aided a couple of the extra-base knocks, landing just fair before rolling to the corner. At the plate, the 26-year-old went 0-for-3. After the homer by Parker, the Sounds sent 15 batters to the plate before reaching base again on a walk to Bianchi in the ninth. First baseman Sean Halton followed with a double to get the Sounds one additional run. The Sounds only other hit came from Caleb Gindl, who found a single in the third inning. The Sounds outfielder has recorded a hit in nine of his last 10 games, hitting .375 (12-for-32) in that stretch. Also seeing action out of the Sounds bullpen was Kyle Heckathorn, who pitched two scoreless innings, facing the minimum. The Nashville Sounds look to avoid the four-game sweep on Thursday night and will send lefty Zach Kroenke (0-3, 6.46) against a 'Hawks pitcher to be announced. Baseball will return to Greer Stadium on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants).
