Gomez trade finally paying dividends?
TooLiveBrew replied to adambr2's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
This is the Carlos Gómez that people had in mind when he anchored the trade for Johan Santana, and this is the Carlos Gómez that the Twins kept waiting on to blossom. In short, it's pretty awesome to see him start to scratch his talent ceiling. -
Sounds Tame Grizzlies, 11-7 Parker, De La Rosa Each Contribute Four RBIs In Victory Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/2GXLFG9.jpg Stephen Parker (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds plated a season-high 11 runs, including six in the seventh frame, in an 11-7 victory over the visiting Fresno Grizzlies on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. The Sounds' 5 through 8 hitters did most of the damage, combining to go 7-for-12 with 10 RBIs and six runs scored, as Nashville (10-22) recorded its third win in the last four contests. Third baseman Stephen Parker homered and drove in four runs while extending the Sounds' longest hitting streak of the year to 12 games to pace an 12-hit offensive attack. He is batting .318 (14-for-44) during the hit streak. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa also drove in four runs for Nashville during a 2-for-4 evening that included a pair of doubles. Fresno first baseman Brett Pill belted a pair of home runs and drove in six of Fresno's seven runs in the losing effort. Pill spotted the visitors a quick 3-0 lead with a three-run homer to left off Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz in the top of the first inning. Kensuke Tanaka drew a game-opening walk and Gary Brown singled before both scored on Pill's one-out blast, the infielder's eighth of the year. Parker pulled Nashville back within a run in the second when he slugged a two-run homer to right-center. The blast, the infielder's fourth of the year, came off Fresno starter Boof Bonser and extended Parker's hitting streak to 12 games, the best effort by a Sound this season. Nashville pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Josh Prince led off with a double to right-center and Caleb Gindl drew a walk. After Hunter Morris grounded out to move up the runners, Sean Halton laced a game-tying RBI single to center and Parker followed with his third RBI of the night, a go-ahead sacrifice fly that plated Gindl for a 4-3 Sounds lead. De La Cruz left in line for his second win of the year but took a no-decision after the Sounds' bullpen failed to protect the lead. The veteran right-hander allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of action, walking a season-high five batters and striking out a pair. The Sounds tacked on a run in the sixth when Halton doubled and later scored on De La Rosa's sacrifice fly to deep left-center, stretching the home team's advantage to 5-3. Fresno pulled back even at 5-5 in the top of the seventh against Nashville reliever Donovan Hand. Pinch-hitter Chris Dominguez led off with a homer to left-center to greet the right-hander. The blast was Dominguez's third roundtripper of the year and the first pinch-hit homer allowed by Sounds pitching since July 2011. Tanaka followed the dinger by drawing a walk and later came home to tie the contest on a Pill groundout. The Sounds grabbed the lead right back in the home half of the frame, putting up a season-high six runs against Grizzlies reliever Brett Bochy. Nashville loaded the bases before Parker drove in his fourth run of the evening by coaxing a two-out walk from the right-hander to force in Scooter Gennett, who ha[d] opened the frame by extending his PCL-best on-base streak to 27 games with a single. De La Rosa followed with a three-run double to center that gave the Sounds a 9-5 cushion. The big inning continued for Nashville as Blake Davis and Hand knocked back-to-back RBI singles to make it an 11-5 game. Fresno closed out the night's scoring when Pill went yard for the second time in the contest, belting a two-out, two-run homer off Travis Webb in the top of the ninth. Hand (2-1) was the beneficiary of the late Sounds rally, earning the win after allowing two runs in two relief innings. Bochy (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up the six -spot in just two-thirds of a frame. The Sounds will look to capture their first winning series of the season when the teams meet for a 7:05 p.m. finale on Friday evening. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (1-4, 4.55) will man the bump for Nashville to face Fresno right-hander Justin Fitzgerald, who will make his Triple-A debut. I see what you did there... -
I'm a bit antsy about Jungmann's start tonight. Hearing things like "tingling" & "nerve" generally make me pretty unsettled about a pitcher. Here's hoping there's nothing to worry about, and that he can start to get his season on track tonight.

Encouraging to see Ariel Pena starting to find his form again. His post-trade performance last season was pretty troubling.

Sounds School Fresno On Education Day Greer Stadium Hosts Season-High Crowd For 5-2 Win Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/EM2komU.jpg Blake Davis (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) AUDIO: Josh Prince RBI Sac Bunt AUDIO: Josh Prince Leaping Catch At Wall AUDIO: Blake Davis Sacrifice Fly AUDIO: Hainley Statia Pinch-Hit RBI Double AUDIO: Cole Garner RBI Single AUDIO: Final Out Of The Game NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds picked up a 5-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Wednesday morning at Greer Stadium, in front of a season-high 10,079 fans in attendance for the second of three Sounds Education Days. Tied 2-2 in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out, shortstop Blake Davis, who was already two-for-two on the day, lofted a ball into left field for a sacrifice-fly to drive in the go-ahead run. With his single and triple earlier in the game, Davis improves his hit streak to seven games. The Sounds added another two runs: the first from Hainley Statia's pinch-hit RBI-double to right field after the Davis sacrifice, and the final on a Cole Garner single in the eighth. Garner's run scored second baseman Scooter Gennett, who reached base on balls in his final plate appearance to reach base for the 26th consecutive game, the PCL's longest active streak. Jesus Sanchez (3-0) picked up the win from the hill for Nashville, his third, retiring nine consecutive batters over three innings and five by strikeout. Michael Olmsted pitched a hitless eighth before making way for Rob Wooten, who faced the minimum to pick up his fifth save of the season. Sounds pitchers combined to hold Fresno batters to three hits and totaled 14 strikeouts to mark a single-game season high, surpassing the team's previous best of 13, set on April 19 in Iowa. The Sounds captured the 2-1 lead in the third inning on a fielder's choice throwing error sequence with two runners in scoring position. Anderson De La Rosa and Blake Davis each singled to start the frame and moved one base closer on [R.J.] Seidel's sacrifice bunt. In the next at-bat, Josh Prince bunted the ball towards first base, which Fresno pitcher Michael Kickham (0-4) fielded and, in trying to beat De La Rosa home, sailed to the backstop, allowing Blake Davis to score on the throwing error. The Grizzlies scored first in the game with a Brett Pill RBI-single to centerfield in the first inning, scoring Kensuke Tanaka, who doubled and stole third. In the fourth, outfielder Juan Perez hit a triple to centerfield to score Johnny Monell and level the game at two runs apiece. Both Fresno runs came off Sounds starting pitcher R.J. Seidel, who made his Triple-A debut after posting a 4.85 ERA in eight relief appearances with Double-A Huntsville. The 25-year-old allowed three hits across four innings of work, with six strikeouts and three walks. The Sounds are back Thursday night (7:05 p.m.) at Greer Stadium, for game three of four against the Fresno Grizzlies. He actually was mixing in his changeup pretty effectively at times tonight. He still doesn't show great feel for it more than every once in a while, but his FB/sinker can be so electric that his change can be effective even without a lot of polish. I feel like he hardly threw his slider tonight, though.

Going to keep this one bare bones tonight... However, we have a (not Brooks) Kieschnick sighting! Sounds Open Homestand With 5-3 Loss Parker, Gennett Extend Streaks For Nashville In Defeat Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/bpSwi3X.jpg Stephen Parker (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds began their homestand with a 5-3 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. The defeat was the tenth in the last 11 games for Nashville (8-22), which dropped a series opener at home for the first time all season. The Sounds won their previous four openers. Grizzlies starter Shane Loux (3-1) kept the Nashville offense in check during a quality start victory. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over six innings. Fresno took control early, erupting for five two-out runs in the top of the second inning to grab a 5-0 lead against Sounds starter Zach Kroenke. The Grizzlies loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a walk off the left-hander. Kroenke recovered to retire the next two hitters on a flyout and strikeout before third baseman Juan Perez worked an eight-pitch at-bat into a broken-bat, two-run single to shallow left that put the visitors on the board. Gary Brown doubled the Fresno lead to 4-0 when he followed with a two-run double down the left field line and Roger Kieschnick (3-for-3) capped off the five-run rally with a run-scoring two-bagger to right that skidded just inside the first base bag. Kroenke (0-5) suffered his fifth loss in six starts for Nashville after giving up five runs on six hits in five innings of work, his longest outing of the year. Nashville missed a chance to get on the board in the home half of the third. Kroenke led off with a single and moved to second when shortstop Juan Ciriaco mishandled Josh Prince's grounder. Scooter Gennett followed with a single up the middle to extend his PCL-leading on-base streak to 25 games. Kroenke attempted to score from second on the play but was thrown out at the plate by Brown from center field. The Sounds finally broke through in the fourth when Hunter Morris singled with one out and later scored on a Dayton Buller groundout. Third baseman Stephen Parker (2-for-3) extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single in the seventh. After Buller followed with a single of his own, the Sounds stranded a pair of baserunners in scoring position in the frame, as pinch-hitter Cole Garner and Prince fanned in succession against Fresno reliever Steve Edlefsen. Nashville didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, plating a pair of runs and bringing the potential tying run to the plate against the Grizzlies' bullpen. With one out, Parker singled and Buller drew a walk from Ramon Ramirez to put a pair of runners on board for Blake Davis, who delivered an RBI single to right to make it a 5-2 game. Kieschnick overran the ball on the play, allowing the runners to advance to second and third with one out. Fresno skipper Bob Mariano summoned Heath Hembree from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Sean Halton, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Buller to draw the Sounds within 5-3. Hembree then retired Prince on a game-ending groundout to nail down his second save of the year. The teams continue the series on Wednesday morning with an 11:05 a.m. matinee. Right-hander R.J. Seidel will make his Triple-A debut with a start for the Sounds. Fresno will counter with southpaw Michael Kickham (0-3, 6.00). Nashville Box Nashville PbP Nashville Gameday -

Yeah, if the move is to replace Weeks now that Ramírez is back, I'd much rather go with Yuni &/or González than start Gennett's clock. Since González has been so bad at the plate, & I think Yuni's coming back to earth sooner rather than later, I will still stick with Rickie at 2B -- but the dude needs some games off. Why Ron doesn't sit him for a couple days in a row... I will never know. Coulter's an exciting hitting prospect, too. I hope the T-Rats' offense hits its potential in the first half this season; they should score a lot of runs. -

My issue with calling up Gennett now, as I stated earlier, is that he's not going to be the difference btw. postseason & no-postseason. I would like to see him put in more time at Nashville, personally, to continue to work on his defense & hopefully develop a better power stroke against higher-level pitching. Also, save his service time. On Olmsted -- he doesn't look ready yet this season. He's had his issues so far: 14 IP, 14 BB/15 K, 6.43 ERA as of tonight. Compare that to his 2012 MiLB numbers: 59.1 IP, 1.52 ERA, 15 BB/92 K (no, that's not a typo!). Hard to say what the cause of his command problems is... maybe some disappointment at not making the big club & repeating AAA after a dominant '12? Who knows. The arm is definitely there, and I'd rather he also keeps getting work with Nashville. No reason to add another wild arm to the disaster-party that is the big club's bullpen; let him sort out the command first & then call him up. For me, the sad truth is that there just isn't much bullpen help down in Nashville. I'm not confident that anyone there right now can come up & be an improvement, which is just painful. I'm looking forward to seeing Victor Roache in person more, as I've probably mentioned a few too many times already on this subforum. I'm heading to Friday's game (trying out the new club level seating, too) & really looking forward to it. The only other T-Rats game I went to this season, I missed McFarland, so hoping to see him as well. -
Sounds Finish Road Trip With 9-5 Win Blake Davis Goes 3-for-5 With Three RBIs; Three Others Homer Nashville Sounds http://i.imgur.com/250Bqzs.jpg Scooter Gennett & Blake Davis, archive photo (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) AUDIO: Caleb Gindl 2-Run Triple AUDIO: Khris Davis' Game-Tying HR AUDIO: Sean Halton's Go-Ahead Homer AUDIO: Blake Davis' Two-Run Double ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds avoided going winless on their eight-game road trip Monday at The Dell Diamond, rallying from four runs down to defeat the Round Rock Express, 9-5, in the nine-inning three-hour 46-minute series finale. The team concludes the road trip 1-7, snapping a nine-game losing skid with their first win on the road since April 13. Trailing 4-3 heading into the 6th, the Sounds strung together four runs off of Round Rock reliever Lisalverto Bonilla (2-1). The action began with Khris Davis' second hit as a Sound: a home run to left field that tied the game. One batter later, outfielder Sean Halton knocked the Sounds third dinger of the day for the 5-4 advantage. The Sounds added two more runs in the frame on Blake Davis' double down the left-field line, which scored Hainley Statia and Josh Prince, who both reached base on balls. The initial rally took place in the inning prior, putting up three in the fifth, ignited by a home run from catcher Anderson De La Rosa. The shot to left field was De La Rosa's first of the season and first of his Triple-A career. All three homers were solo shots making 17 of Nashville's 20 homers this season solo affairs. Later in the inning, Statia drew a walk to get on base and stole second before moving to third on Davis' infield single. Outfielder Caleb Gindl followed with a two-out two-run triple to pull the Sounds to within one. Davis finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and extended his season-best hit streak to five games. After driving in the Sounds eighth run with a single through the infield in the eighth inning and moving to second on the throw home, the 29-year-old scored the team's final run off the day on Gindl's single to left field. Gindl also finished with three RBIs. Nashville starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg allowed the Express an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Shortstop Jurickson Profar cracked a double to the wall in centerfield and came around on Chris McGuiness' double into left field. McGuiness crossed home plate via a Yangervis Solarte single. After Thornburg issued two walks to lead off the fourth, designated hitter Alex Buchholz hit a double that rolled to the left-center field wall. Thornburg left in line for the loss, but benefitted from the Sounds comeback to finish with the no decision, fanning three and walking two over four innings of work in which he allowed four runs to Round Rock on six hits. Travis Webb took the hill in the fifth inning for the Sounds and loaded the bases. The 28-year-old twirled a bases-loaded strikeout before Michael Olmsted (1-1) entered the game with two outs. Olmsted finished the frame by inducing Buchholz into a groundout. He stayed in to pitch the sixth and received the win for his efforts, giving up one unearned run and walking two. Donovan Hand and Rob Wooten also got work out of the bullpen, combining for three hitless innings in which they walked three and struck out three. In the sixth, Sounds Manager Mike Guerrero was ejected from the contest by home plate umpire Blake Davis after Round Rock scored on De La Rosa's throwing error in the sixth inning. The catcher tried to pickoff the runner at first with a snap throw down the line, but the ball got past Halton at first, letting in Round Rock's final run. Guerrero was arguing the call. The Sounds begin a fresh eight-game homestand on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants) for four games before the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's) come to town. Nashville Box Jurickson Profar: 1-5, 2B, SB, E (throw) Gindl has stayed hot, and today was his first game of the season in the 3-hole in the Sounds lineup -- he even added an OF assist. Yeah, I don't mean that I don't think Gennett can cut it at 2B, but I would definitely like to see the Brewers do better at any position than just 'adequate.' I just don't think he's going to be a very good player. He's certainly looking like, at the very least, he'll provide good value in his pre-arby seasons -- and for a small market, that's unquestionably important. Braun was initially pretty brutal in LF, but he's definitely improved to the point where he's at worst average, and perhaps a tick above for the position imo. Gennett may well improve his defense as well, but from the reports on him over the years, it doesn't sound like he's gotten a whole heck of a lot better (not that he was awful to begin with, just average & limited to 2B-only, apparently). -
Roenicke a bright guy? Lol. I've watched just about every Brewer game since he's been the manager and the guy is a grade A moron. That's the kind of exaggeration that makes this kind of discussion unpalatable. If you think he's a moron, I don't think you understand what that word means. If you think he sometimes makes bad or terrible decisions, I can't say I disagree with you.

If Gennett is only a singles & gap hitter with average-ish defense, he's not really anything special in MLB. Not many guys make a big impact with only one plus tool. I still think Gennett could bulk up more & turn some of those 2Bs into HRs, but he hasn't put on that much weight since being drafted. As has been said constantly all over this forum, his hit tool is an exciting one. -
Man, why do you do this to yourself?! Congrats on Inter qualifying for the CL!

I think I like Maddon, but honestly I'm not familiar enough with him to say for sure. Iirc he likes the sac bunt more than I do.. but not sure if that alone is enough to say I don't like him.
