  1. Of course, but don't you have to get MLB talent for him at this point? No. To me, that would be the whole point -- getting a prospect who could potentially serve as a fulltime starter at some point, rather than moving him for some role player for the current roster. Let's say that Gonzalez was going to be out for a long period of time and the Red Sox had an MLB ready shortstop who was blocked Well, they have a SS who's basically MLB ready (with questions about the bat) in Jose Iglesias. Why should the Brewers wait to see if Gonzalez gets hurt? They're going to need a longterm solution for SS at some point who's cheap & under team control for a long time. That would be Iglesias (assuming in this hypothetical that the BoSox would agree to that deal, not sure they really would). If the Brewers could get him, he would have up to two full seasons to work on his swing at AAA, given Gonzalez's presence.
  2. I guess what bothers me about this roster management (shared blame to Melvin & Roenicke imo) is the Brewers are going to “go with this for a while and see how it plays out.” (RR quote) What I read as implicit in that comment is that the braintrust is aware they're not necessarily making the best decision... which I guess you could say for any time you make a roster move, it's possible you didn't make the best call, but it still bugs me. The approach is really frustrating. You have two guys in Maysonet & Green that, ability-wise, are a better net duo than Iz+Ish. But the Brewers are going to wait to see if the latter combo will continue to be underwhelming MLB performers? I hate Melvin's penchant for stashing guys in the minors because they have options, & keeping useless or easily-improved-upon vets because he'll lose them otherwise. Why on earth would you worry about losing a guy like Izturis or Ishikawa when you got them for free in the first place? They're the definitions of replacement-level players -- freely available. (I realize part of having Green at Nashville is to get regular at-bats, but I feel he's at the point in his development where it'd be more beneficial to get him at-bats as a PH & utility player at the big-league level)
  3. Hah, good catch. My excitement was overwhelming.
  4. I'm guessing quite literally there are guys in low-A ball that could outhit Izturis at the big-league level. Even if he's a significantly better SS defender than Fontenot, there is no way I want Izturis instead of Fontenot. I'll take my lumps in the field for the few times Fontenot would have to play SS in exchange for having a competent hitter instead.
  5. Well sorry. I honestly didn't think it was condescending. I think the dollar value placed on one-inning RPs is astronomically high... not even close to what the position produces. I apologize to you & anyone else I have offended. The context was meant to be that all (or the vast, vast majority) here are well informed & most seem to agree closers are way overvalued.
  6. Well I wasn't making any sort of ruling, more of just fun. Of course not every player the Braves have traded is garbage. Fwiw, Pastornicky was named the Braves' starting SS. I caught that on the MLB Network ticker last night.
  7. Good point; RR even mentioned the Brewers would “go with this for a while and see how it plays out.” Link
  8. Baseball-Reference has changed their homepage standings from its offseason format to the 2012 season, with every team at 0-0! I can't believe OD is almost here, but honestly Friday feels sooo far away right now!
  9. I don't think this is entirely true. At the very least, RR has relatively significant input, & I want to say I remember Melvin making a comment last season that Roenicke has his call on a lot of players... my guess would be things like stashing guys with options at AAA would be all Melvin, but things like keeping Ish over Conrad would be RR's call.
  10. Craziness! Welcome to the Ron Roenicke school of 25-man roster management. Please, for your own sake, exit as soon as possible.
  11. Well I don't believe they'd be able to trade Aoki until later in the season (I *think* they have to wait for a certain point & then he has to clear waivers, since he's a new FA signing... but I won't pretend to know for sure). So perhaps they're shopping Morgan, but I'd bet against Melvin being that flexible & creative. So it's either Roenicke being dense & planning on using Ishikawa ahead of Aoki on the PH depth chart, or he just meant Ishikawa will primarily be used for PH duty (& not necessarily before Aoki)... and that would further underscore what a terrible decision it was to give a 25-man spot to a one-position defender who's swings from the same side as the starter at the only position he's capable of backing up.
  12. Oh, yeah, that would be cool. The view for the game itself wouldn't be the best, but it's a unique vantage point, and since you're going to multiple games it would probably be fun for a change of pace. I assume you've seen the area when you've watched Brewers games...?
  13. Picking Ishikawa for a bench spot over the more versatile Conrad, & the better hitter in Green is definitely a 2012 reason to complain about Roenicke. I don't mean to belabor the more extreme point that RRR is 'stupid' or a terrible manager (I don't believe he's either), but he definitely appears to have a hard time correctly evaluating talent.
  14. One other thing to consider with regards to Rodríguez's value is that an $8M, 1-season commitment for a Closer™ isn't really that much. I mean, for the love of... I'm sorry to bring this up, please forgive me... the Brewers signed ERIC GAGNE to a 1 yr./$10M deal, and that was 4 seasons ago. On top of that, K-Rod notched his 7th season with a sub-3 ERA, and it wasn't fluky. The dude is still an elite reliever, even with decreased velocity. As well-informed baseball fans, most here at BF understand how vastly overrated the closer 'position' is. But around MLB, it's nothing to scoff at, and teams continue to pay a premium on the FA market for guys' services in that role. The most recent example is Ryan Madson -- the Reds guaranteed him $8.5M, and if the mutual option built into the contract for 2013 would've been exercised, the Reds would've been paying him $11M next year. Madson's been a good reliever, but not better than Rodríguez (ERA-wise), whether you look at their careers or the past 5 seasons. I think that, if the Brewers had a GM that would actually consider it, a team like the Red Sox would absolutely be willing to deal from a position of strength to add an elite bullpen arm like Rodríguez.
  15. The problem is that there is no selling high on K-Rod in my view. Fair enough.
  16. Shall we start the rebuild now then? No, that's the entire point. It's not black & white. You can sell high on a player & still continue to contend.
  17. Or maybe Greinke doesn't care if the deal gets done before OD or on the 8th (or whatever) day of the season, if what's left to be done is work out the details in the contract language & not the larger terms.
  18. Whether it was "too bad" or not to do, that's damn impressive, RawBiz. Congrats & nicely done!
  19. Wow, what a sensational play. I can't decide if the stop or the throw was better.
  20. I think TH's speculation is pretty reasonable there. Things could get pretty interesting this week.
  21. I think the Brewers did a nice job again this year on these TV spots. They definitely mailed it in a bit on the Marcum one, though -- looks like they shot all of about 15 seconds of new footage & just re-used the RC car stuff from last season. Fun stuff overall. I like the pairing of Gamel with Aoki; kinda introduces both of them to the masses.
  22. Melvin would never do this, it's too creative (since he'd have to "find" an 8th inning guy). But I love the idea; shedding that $8M contract for a one-inning RP would be excellent, provided the Sawx would give a prospect with a bit of upside.
  23. I disagree -- it just means you can assimilate him, like the Borg.
  24. Over/under on how many seasons from now Kentucky will be stripped of this NC due to recruiting violations?
