  1. What matters is that Gamel actually projects to be an above-average hitter at the big-league level, while Green does not. Gamel has little or nothing to do with Green, Green will never hit enough to be a viable option at 1B. The Brewers asking Green to try out 1B this ST has to do with turning him into what he'll need to be to have a long MLB career, a super-utility LHB IF. And I agree on the Ramirez signing, the further out we get from that, the worse it looks.
  2. So Kotsay v.2012 is going to be Conrakawa. Good god someone keep these dangerous objects away from our manager; he can't help himself.
  3. Fontenot isn't even much of a defender at 2B, let alone SS, so unfortunately I don't think he's really an option... which is too bad, since his lefty bat would be nice to spell Gonzalez.
  4. Agreed, but Bill Hall is actually a decent comparison, at least in terms of being a guy with very little in his MiLB career that would indicate he could sustain being a productive MLB hitter.
  5. And you can just use the eye test too; George is bad at blocking balls & has a weak arm as far as MLB catchers go.
  6. Yeah, this sums it up for me too. I like Green, and at the same time think his potential is vastly overrated by some Brewers fans. But the guy needs to be challenged with MLB pitching, not stuck behind Brooks freaking Conrad. Although he's also stuck behind Aoki in a way, since to get a decent number of PAs, Green would probably have to be the #1 PH option off the bench in addition to spelling Weeks & Ramirez.
  7. I think you'd find differently if you re-read some of the older topics on McGehee or McGehee/Gamel. There were plenty of posters here who didn't drink the McGehee Kool-Aid.
  8. Rogers has had 8 seasons (6 with any time spent on a mound in game action) to prove his ability to be a healthy & effective starter. To me, thinking he's suddenly going to be able to do it is being too optimistic. Get him in the bullpen in Nashville, get him working late innings & just letting that excellent stuff fly. The Brewers will need another setup man once K-Rod moves on, and I'd love for them to have more options than just overpaying for some other vet.
  9. I think you really need to give this forum more credit. The Cards have a lot of talent, that's for sure. But even you can't deny that there are at least 4 key players who are huge injury risks, due to age and/or prior injuries. Are there some here that can't admit the Cards will win 81 games? Sure, but you couldn't admit the same about the Brewers. So I think objectively the truth is obviously somewhere in the middle.
  10. Man, if I'm Taylor Green, I don't feel good at all about my future as a big-league Milwaukee Brewer.
  11. I feel like I'm not even talking about the same thing... so I give up
  12. I guess I don't really understand the Josh Prince move off SS. Maybe he wasn't as good defensively as we'd all heard/read? Otherwise I don't get it.
  13. I remember Wolf making a comment last year like, 'I wouldn't want to catch me,' referring to how complicated his sign system is. He's definitely not a "crybaby"... man, what is with the namecalling over this issue? It's obviously a lot more complex than "he's stupid!" or "he's a crybaby!" I'm honestly surprised we have people stooping to namecalling.
  14. Your services are needed in the Vacation Destinations thread! People are asking about Seattle & Portland. I did my best on Portland, but I'm guessing you can fill in the gaps. Also, you talking about such easy access to Diamond Knot makes me envious. I'm actually pretty happy with New Glarus's Hearty Hop IPA (just tried it). But, you know, NW hops & hoppy beers. Yeah.
  15. I can only handle the Portland stuff... Pittock Mansion Pioneer Courthouse Waterfront Park (right on the Willamette River) NW 23rd Ave. area (shopping/dining area, a little comparable to State Street in Madison) Kornblatt's Deli (on NW 23d, I miss this place a LOT... we lived nearby & ate breakfast there many weekends) Pearl District (upscale part of downtown, pricier shops & restaurants but nowhere near prohibitively expensive) Powell's Bookstore (if you go, do not miss the rare book room) Voodoo Doughnut (don't miss this! can have long lines; I've only been to the SW/original location) International Rose Test Garden Japanese Garden Mt. Hood I could probably make a list just as long with excellent microbreweries, if you're into good beer. I'd be happy to compile that list separately for you from this post, if desired. I think I posted in the Beer Thread about that very thing once upon a time, so hopefully that post wouldn't be hard to find. The food in general in Portland is fantastic, I won't even try to start a list for restaurants. - Also, Matt Groening is from Portland. Many characters on the show are named for things in Portland, especially the streets in the Alphabet District. Burnside St. is the main E-W artery in Portland, and in the NW section of the city, the streets ascend block-by-block to the north in alphabetical order. Burnside, Couch, Davis, etc. Notable names in that section would be Lovejoy, Flanders, Kearney, Quimby ("Burns"ide too). The shopping/dining district I mentioned on NW 21st Ave. is right in this neighborhood, so you don't need to make any special trip just to see street signs - Two semi-mildly-important pronunciation tips: it's the Will-AM-ette River, & Ore-gun... the locals tease you that "it didn't go anywhere" if you pronounce it Ore-gone - And to clarify the NW/SW designations, the town is referred to in terms of NW/SW & NE/SE areas. It'll make sense once you're there. - If you have a rental car, a tour of the nearby wine country is always fun. Free samples! Alright, I think my brain is tapped for now. I'll add anything else if/when I think of it. Portland really is a great city. The light rail & streetcar lines make the city (especially NW area) incredibly easy to explore. Be sure to take advantage of that, since like any city, parking can be an issue.
  16. You weren't really expecting one, were you?
  17. Maybe he'll earn that Deputy GM badge after all
  18. Or it could be based on glowing scouting reports (for his swing) from scouts all across the league.
  19. That has nothing to do with the point I was making. The only point is that I don't remember anyone saying we "lost" the CC trade. Just some frustrated that a longer-term trade wasn't made, so the Brewers didn't just have to find another SP the next offseason.
  20. Iirc he made a lot of money with a chain of movie theaters
  21. Good question, burnzy. That's a staggering amount of money. I'm probably not remembering this correctly, but I swear the last time I saw MLB franchise value estimates, the Yankees were around $2B, & no one else was really nipping at their heels.
  22. Another cool tidbit, from Tom Haudricourt's nicely detailed & long blog post on the signing:
  23. Some good quotes from Lucroy, via Adam McCalvy's Brewers.com piece: Quotes in the article, too, from Melvin, Weeks, Yo, & Roenicke.
  24. To be fair, the gripe isn't that the Brewers paid too much, the gripe is that the Brewers burned their best (at the time) trade chip for a guy who'd only be with the team for half a season. I just think there's too much glossing over of that important detail.
  25. You have an unbelievably awesome username. That's all I have to add.
