  1. Furcal will make more money while on the DL than Alex Gonzalez will make for his entire season or two seasons with the Brewers. But I still like him as a player... DM just got a steal with Gonzo.
  2. Plus, Mat or Taylor might have to spend time thinking about how Lucroy has so much to think about as a catcher.
  3. I think you were blocking it from your memory.Yeah, I definitely was -- thanks Robin19 for reminding me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif While the 1B/SS/3B aggregate is a useful way to think about how many individuals contribute on offense in baseball, I don't think it's a very useful way to analyze whether or not the team's better off without or with Fielder. He's been the unquestioned leader of the team for at least 3 or 4 seasons now, and is an elite offensive player. I don't agree that you can just take the aggregate of three positions & make that your target for the following season. And actually the main problem I have with that aggregate comparison is the implication that McGehee's & Betancourt's horrid, puke-tastic offense should factor in, in any way, as a bar or standard to measure against. The issue here isn't that Fielder actually isn't so irreplaceable -- it's that if the Brewers hadn't been content with league-worst production from McGehee & Betancourt, there'd be no chance they could assemble a group at 1B/SS/3B that could match the 2011 numbers. Casey & Yuni were that bad. The loss of Fielder, even with his defensive deficiencies, is a huge loss. No two ways about it.
  4. Or just change it to something a little more neutral/positive? The negativity of the title just bugs me. How about "Prince Fielder free agency discussion thread" or something? In fairness to the OP, the premise of the discussion Hammer intended to start here was: "Preface: I have despised Fielder for several years. Those that know me on here probably remember my venom toward him after he attacked Manny Parra in the dugout. That said, teams like Milwaukee cannot blow 20% of their budget on one player." So while he acknowledges that some would've seen it as a grudge against Fielder, the point is about long-term payroll planning.
  5. Good catch, Invader & thanks for sharing. Gonzalez has been one of the most overlooked SS defenders in MLB for basically his whole career. I'm very happy the Brewers have so clearly improved at SS for next season.
  6. I like this buy-low move by the Cubs. He has very legit power & swings from the left side... 'nuff said, for me EDIT: Whoops, I didn't follow the link first. Interesting trade, Colvin & Stewart as decent buy-low swaps. Wouldn't have hurt Renck to do a spell-check google search on LeMahieu.
  7. My point on a MIF reserve is that you have to forecast Weeks to miss time in any given season. The one certainty with Weeks so far in his career is that his all-out play means inevitable DL time. So while I agree on Green being the 2B/3B supersub, I wouldn't want to see a roster spot used on a backup that can only play one position. I think there will be plenty of playing time for two players to back up the MIF spots.
  8. Who ever had Gamel as a top 30 prospect in all of baseball? I'm not sure he ever cracked the top 100 on any major lists. Really, never cracked the top 100 on any major list? If you didn't remember a simple google search would have yielded the truth. This part of the Gamel blurb made me sad: ETA: 2009
  9. Yeah, MiLB error totals are a terrible way to try to understand how good a fielder someone is. Back when this topic was first posted, I tried searching for a scouting report on Bolivar, & came up empty.
  10. Good to hear. Fixed Gear (red ale iirc) is just one more solid local offering. I'm no expert on craft brewing, but it seems like WI has a pretty decent scene at this point.
  11. Saw him a couple years ago. It was a free outdoor gig and most of the audience didn't seem to know him. But by about the middle of the show they were giving him standing o's after every song. He's excellent, but I'm a sucker for some good blues guitar
  12. I'm just going to wait for dlk9s to come along with an awesome .gif for this. Why'd the Brewers sign that guy Braun when they could've extended Gomez!?!?!?!
  13. I got sick of Beast Mode in a hurry. I'd welcome Sea Bass-mode!
  14. Well you know, he didn't save any games after joining the Brewers last season... which means he probably lost his magic pixie dust that allows him to save games. So, what -- $3M or so & let's call it a day?
  15. I swore I read it in this thread, but I can't find where I saw this: Cards fans were right all along -- he is an angel!
  16. 'Playing Trumbo at 3B & LF, and playing Morales when we can fit him in' ... is GM-speak for 'One of these two guys can be had via trade. Call me.' However, I hope the Brewers just stick with Gamel.
  17. I agree with you & BrycePecore. Punto would be a very nice compliment to the RH-hitting middle infielders the Brewers have. Of course Punto has his durability questions, but with Weeks & Gonzalez healthy he'd only start once or maybe twice a week. He's a very nice idea, basically what I'd draw up given Weeks/Gonzo -- a lefty (or switch) bat that is a plus in the field at 2B & SS. I like Ryan just in a general sense of having a good defender to back up 2B & SS. But Punto's switch/lefty bat fits nicely.
  18. I vote for Brendan Ryan (still, but in that different role), pogo. He's cheap & a good defender. You have to imagine with Weeks & a 35-yo Gonzalez that there'll be plenty of playing time to be had for a MIF backup.
  19. And there wasn't any last year, either. At least this season the shortstop will be able to do something well.
  20. I'm so happy with this outcome
  21. So to compare, you have the Angels with the two biggest hitter & pitcher FA acquisitions, & the Dodgers with... a bunch of dudes. Not a fun time to be a Dodgers fan.
  22. I feel like squealing. This is good, just a good sign that Melvin wasn't as blind to Betancourt's shortcomings as he sounded publicly. Surprise, surprise there with Melvin, I guess. As has been pointed out, Gonzalez is basically Betancourt's equal at the plate. And not only is he not a black hole on defense, but he's actually a plus there. Nice to see an improvement at shortstop.
  23. Oh don't you go getting my hopes up. Now I really hope this is true.
  24. Looking for some Pujols stats, I accidentally sorted the wOBA column on FanGraphs' 2011 batting leaders page to the worst guys in the league, and saw Casey McGehee's name second from the top. That made me sad. Yuni's was fourth from the top.
