  1. who's going to back up SS... ? You can trade for or sign any number of guys who can actually play SS to back up at SS. I think JHJ's arm precludes him from being a good SS defender... he barely had enough arm to make some of the more routine throws from 3B this season imo. I'm not advocating for or against him (bc I know nothing of him), but just today MLBTR posted this about Robert Andino:"Orioles infielder Robert Andino is drawing trade interest from teams who could use him as a starting shortstop, tweets MASN's Roch Kubatko." And, since I went there to peruse their nicely-constructed list of SS options on the FA market... Cesar Izturis, Jack Wilson, Ronny Cedeno, Nick Punto. Then obviously there are the guys like Furcal & Alex Gonzalez who're viable SS starters available as FAs. What I'd like to see the Brewers explore, personally, is to scour the league for shortstop candidates blocked in other organizations (a la MLBTR's mention of Andino). I'm fine with a Furcal or Gonzalez signing, but I hope the front office is willing to be more creative in case there's a better long-term fit available.
  2. Good to hear. Best of luck to you, big fella, but the Brewers have to move on. Please don't sign with the Cubs!
  3. Ryan's a guy I like too, for what he is. He's also super-cheap, and I doubt the Mariners view him as all that important to keep. It sounds like the M's are trying to be bidders on Prince, so after they either sign him or fall out of the race, I'd like to see Doug give Jack Z a call. Ryan reminds me of Furcal on defense, but obviously not at the plate.
  4. I think JHJ is vastly overrated by some here. He doesn't have the arm for SS (imo), and is a so-so hitter for a 2B/3B type. Taylor Green can probably provide more value in that role. I think JHJ's a better defender than Green, but not by enough to justify keeping him ahead of Green's bat.
  5. You know like locating where Wisconsin is During a '10-'11 Badgers' men's basketball broadcast in Madison, coming back from commercial ESPN showed a stock footage shot of the Minnesota state capitol. I know it was discussed in the '10-'11 college hoops thread in the Off Topic forum. And no, they weren't playing the Gophers.
  6. I think the Brewers are about 99% certain that McGehee will have a bounce-back season. There's no way they go after a guy like Cuddyer seriously imo, unless they trade one of McGehee/Green/Gamel.
  7. Well, it is a foreboding trend. I just don't believe it can be determined if it's a trend or not. He's certainly not 100% fit, but he's no McGehee, either. I think he's going to be one of the best 3B in the NL & MLB for most of the next 5 seasons or so. With Reyes locked up for that timeframe too, the Fish have a huge advantage over the rest of the league on the left side of the infield. Absolutely no to Rollins for me. The more I think about this, the more I agree. He sounds like he's looking for a pretty big contract, if a guess at the minimum offer it'd take to get him to listen would be something like 4 yrs./$40M. If he can be had for three seasons or less, great. But if that's the case I don't see why he wouldn't just stay with Philly, given what fondybrewfan posted. I hate to say it, but Rollins smells like a Melvin signing -- guy with a 'track record' & postseason success. I hope he concentrates on Furcal & the trade market.
  8. I would actually love to see them do that again. Like jericho said, It seemed to work the first time. Remember when people were complaining about the Marlins not spending any money? Maybe they were stockpiling it & waiting to make their move. If this Pujols rumor is well-informed, then this is the Fish splurging to the tune of almost $350M in guaranteed money this offseason on just three players.
  9. I thought the Veterans Committee elected many players, but not really in recent times.
  10. He's already had one very public spat with the organization; I'd be surprised if this turns into another. That's got the chance to be an incredible left side of the infield. I was trying to think last night what other MLB teams could match up with that, and I couldn't come up with any.
  11. people are overlooking his recent decline. "Person" seems to be implying him simply not posting his 4th-consecutive .900+ OPS season in 2010, & being injured for a large part of 2011 = a "decline" I won't argue that he's a positive defender, but even at 3B his value is still very high. I mean, we're fans of a team that gave 600 PAs to an awful defender at 3B who also 'hit' .223/.280/.346/ .626 last season. Ramirez is so much more valuable than that, it's insane. I know you seem to be annoyed by people talking up players' fantasy value, or value as described by WAR. But come on, this guy has put up three HOF caliber seasons, two good ones, & had a bad 2011 when he was dealing with injury problems. I don't expect that you'll change your mind & like him, but at least be objective.
  12. I'm really glad this deal is done. Now I don't have to worry about the Brewers being the "winner" in this lottery.
  13. I admit I'm a bit scared for the answer to this, but in what world is a shortstop with a career .306/.380/.506/.886 line "overrated"*? The only way that really gets overrated is if people are calling him the best SS of all time, which I've never heard said about Ramirez. * Not to mention that half his games over said career have been in an extreme pitchers' park
  14. Marcum+Thornburg+filler wouldn't even come close for those two. Any trade for Ramirez would require the Brewers giving up a lot of young, cost-controlled talent. Sure he is a good hitter but his defense is Yuniesque. That's not fair at all to Hanley -- he can't be that bad
  15. And when Braun starts drawing IBBs all over the place? I assume this is meant without the 'protection' from Fielder... who led the league in intentional walks last season & still was a terror on offense with no one 'protecting' him. Braun will be fine, & the Brewers will be fine.
  16. I just hate adding - for $10+ million - an aging, bad fielding player who has missed significant time in 2 of the last 3 seasons. If it was a for a year or two, sure. But for three and four years - that's big risk. I definitely agree with your points here. However, what it made me think of was all of the hypothetical discussions BF.netters have had over the past ~5 seasons regarding Fielder & his defense. The line that was always thrown around was something like, 'Yes, Prince's offense is amazing, but his defense really cuts into his value. You can find corner IF bats that won't be huge overall drops-off from Fielder's net production' -- well, here's one tangible example of that. In terms of just a season-to-season analysis, Ramirez's offense shouldn't be expected to be that much worse than Fielder's, given that he can play a passable 3B & probably a decent 1B. Obviously A-Ram's age is where the concerns & projected gaps in production would come from. Now I don't mean to start any debate about whether or not Ramirez is more valuable than Prince, or that the Brewers should sign him for any more than two or three seasons. But this just stands out as a real-world instance of that hypothetical that was discussed time & time again about the Brewers' life after Fielder. I just find it interesting.
  17. Nice find, that's a really useful format to compare the players
  18. The Dodgers are trying to waste as much money as possible... The beat goes on -- 2/$10M to Capuano. (actually that's not a bad deal at all)
  19. I actually really like Ramirez. The sad thing is he may yet even be an upgrade over McGehee on defense, & I doubt many here would pick Casey to outhit him in the near future. I think I agree with RockCo that I wouldn't want to see them go beyond two seasons. Knowing Melvin, it'd be a 2-yr. offer with a team option or mutual option for a third season. So what do you do with Taylor Green? This would just kill his value. Trade him or utilize him as a 2B/3B utility player. There's nothing wrong with that, Ramirez is an injury risk & Green could get ~250 PAs just in relief duty at 2B & 3B. Then if Ramirez gets injured, depending on the timing, Green could get more like 350-450 PAs.
  20. I know, that was the oddest part to me, SoCal. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what that was supposed to mean. Pipe dream? That's the best I came up with. Seems kind of stupid not to at least have someone watching the Japanese league. I totally agree, especially with how much money the Brewers are clearly making. It shouldn't be cost-prohibitive to have one or even two full-time Japanese scouts. At least, it's an investment I'd hope the team would make just in case it may pay off down the line. They've scouted other countries well, & I would expect that'd continue in Japan.
  21. Well one thing I think that can be read between the lines there is that teams haven't been responsive to the 8 yr./$175-$200M number Boras floated out there not too long ago. To me, him now leaking this 6/$120M figure is saying to teams that the target price has dropped. Fielder signing somewhere for 6-7 years & $125-$150M certainly doesn't seem all that far-fetched. I think whoever gives him that extra season, whether it'd be a 7th or 8th, will probably be where he signs.

  23. His shot selection was pretty poor for a while, though it's easy to see his potential with some of the athletic moves/shots he was creating. Agreed -- I just assumed he was geeked out of his mind to be playing in such a big game. He definitely needs to harness that energy, but like you said his potential was on full display.
  24. After getting some input from Principessa, I lean yes on Bernie Williams. She said his great athletic ability helped compensate for his bad instincts as a fielder... basically a scratch fielder but with a subpar arm. The man could hit, though, that's for sure. Fair enough. I'd throw out Devon White right away I think I would too, but his defense was a-mazing. Only reason I included him. I like the Steve Finley mention by topper, too. Another good comp. But Bernie's bat was so good, I guess I have to lean yes. I'll admit I tend to be a big-HOF guy as opposed to small-hall. There are so many guys voted in by the veterans committee, it'd be a shame not to honor a guy that was as good as Williams was. EDIT: And Andruw Jones could have been I would vote yes on him. I have little doubt he was one of the best defensive centerfielders of all-time at his peak. He also provided a lot of value on offense. I don't mean this in a harsh way, but the fact that he could play a decent CF is kind of the whole point behind stats like WAR. Not many guys can & can hit to that level. Same reason why Jeter is (rightfully) regarded as a great shorstop.
  25. Eh. Sometimes shots don't fall. They played well overall. I think this is Bo Ryan's coaching motto. They played excellent defense as usual, and if their shots fall they're hard to beat. The main problem I had tonight was Taylor's subpar shot selection in the second half. Otherwise, good team performance when no one's jumper was dialed in. This game will probably help the Badgers' stock come tourney time as much as hinder it. The only way this could work against you is if you're vying for a #1 or #2 seed, which I guess I don't think the Badgers will be. Berggren was great, and Ryan's praise for him (passed along by the announcers, in-game) are things Bo Ryan just doesn't say about his basketball players. That was as eye-opening as anything Berggren did on-court, honestly. Brust looked amped up, and like an excellent athlete. It's impressive to go from practice squad to relevant minutes at Dean Smith Center.
