Segura set to return in Brewers' series opener vs. D-backs By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | 5/27/2015 8:11 PM ET MILWAUKEE -- Brewers shortstop Jean Segura is expected back from the 15-day disabled list for Friday's series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park. It was a minimum DL stint for Segura, who reluctantly accepted the assignment after suffering a fracture in the joint of his finger on a slide into third base on May 12. He pleaded with club officials to allow him to play through the injury, but was convinced that doing so could risk a more serious injury, and a long-term absence. He will return to action without a Minor League rehab assignment. "I'll be able to do it," Segura said. "I've been taking some swings in the cage and it's OK." Asked whether his finger was fully healed, he said, "I think it's good enough." Things to know about this game • Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson opposes D-backs righty Rubby De La Rosa, who has pitched parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues but never faced Milwaukee. Likewise, Nelson has never pitched against Arizona. • With Segura back at shortstop, Brewers manager Craig Counsell has three players available to cover second base: Luis Sardinas, Hector Gomez and Elian Herrera. Asked whether one of those players would handle the bulk of starts at that position, Counsell said, "I think Luis will see some time at second base for sure. He's going to play some second base, I'll tell you that. "On an everyday basis, I don't know. But he's going to play some second base. He's been primarily a shortstop, but he's played second base in the big leagues; he played second base last year with Texas. It's a little new to him, but I think he'll be fine doing it." • Arizona infielder Aaron Hill has a knack for hitting the Brewers. He's a .372 career hitter with a .991 OPS against them, including .472 with a 1.043 OPS in eight games at Miller Park. On June 29, 2012, Hill hit for the cycle in Milwaukee.

Lohse, Lincecum rolling into series opener By Jon Cooper / Special to MLB.com | 3:46 PM ET The Brewers kick off a six-game homestand Monday afternoon in a Memorial Day matchup against the Giants. Veteran righty Kyle Lohse gets the ball for the home team in the opener of a three-game series, while a rejuvenated Tim Lincecum goes for the visitors. Both starters are looking to complete a perfect month of May. Lohse (3-4, 5.53 ERA) enters the game with a 2-0 record and 3.38 ERA (nine earned runs in 24 innings) this month. He didn't factor into the decision Wednesday in Detroit, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings in the Brewers' 5-2 loss. Lohse is 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA in his career against the Giants. The last time he faced them, Aug. 31 at AT&T Park, he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 15-5 loss. Lincecum (4-2, 2.08 ERA) has gone 3-0 while pitching to a 1.05 ERA (three earned runs in 25 2/3 innings) in May. He hasn't allowed a run in three of four starts this month, with batters hitting .157 against him. His last time out, Lincecum threw seven shutout innings against the Dodgers, allowing only three hits in a Giants' 4-0 win. He is looking to continue his success at Miller Park, where he is 3-1 lifetime with a 3.66 ERA and has 36 strikeouts in 32 innings. Three things to know for this game • Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun got a day of rest Sunday and should be raring to go. He's had success against Lincecum, hitting .320 (8-for-25) with a .720 slugging percentage, three homers and eight RBIs. • It's no "Freak" accident that Lincecum has had success against the Brewers, holding the current roster to a .226 average and .285 on-base percentage. Aside from Braun, no active Brewer has an average over .220 against Lincecum. • Giants outfielder Angel Pagan has feasted against Lohse, batting .429 (6-for-14) with five RBIs. Of the 16 RBIs by 2015 Giants against Lohse, 15 have come from three guys: Pagan, Hunter Pence (.320 career average vs. Lohse) and Casey McGhee, who was designated for assignment Sunday.

Nelson, Foltynewicz square off in series finale By Jon Cooper / Special to MLB.com | May 23rd, 2015 A pair of youngsters, Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson and Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz, have plenty to prove Sunday when the Brewers and Braves wrap up their four-game series at Turner Field. Both Foltynewicz, 23, and Nelson, 25, will be making their first appearances against their respective opponent. Nelson (2-4, 3.73 ERA) is looking to build on his outing Tuesday, when he beat the Tigers, 4-2, in Detroit, allowing one run and three hits over eight innings. He's been an innings eater all season, having pitched into the seventh in six of his eight starts and all four in May. The Niceville, Fla., product pitched at the University of Alabama and was a Braves fan growing up (his favorite players were Greg Maddux and John Smoltz). Nelson is holding opponents to a .213 batting average. Foltynewicz (2-1, 5.32 ERA), is looking to snap a two-start winless streak and bounce back from a tough outing, a 5-3 loss against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. He has allowed a homer in each of his last three starts but also has fanned seven hitters in each. Against the Rays, he allowed a career-high five runs and eight hits but also walked only one, a season low. Three things to know for this game • Atlanta right fielder Nick Markakis' fourth-inning double on Saturday gave him at least one hit in 15 of his last 17 games, including four straight. • Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun's first-inning RBI single on Saturday gave him four hits and three RBIs in the series. That surpassed his total number of hits and RBIs that he had against Atlanta in all of 2014, when he batted .115 (3-for-26), with one homer and one RBI. • Foltynewicz is among National League rookie leaders in ERA, innings, opponents' batting average and strikeouts. He's found success in the last category with an improved breaking ball. In his last start, four of his seven K's came on the bender.

For the umpteenth time in the umpteenth thread in recent months, yes. Preventing runs has a stronger correlation to winning than scoring runs. The 40-50 potential errors you cite, along with all the bad plays he'd make that wouldn't get technically scored as errors, would be a huge detriment to the club's attempt to win games. There is no justification for him being at 3B, just like there would've been no justification for playing someone like a Prince Fielder circa 2011 at 3B.

Lohse rolling into Brewers' sweep bid in Detroit By Alejandro Zúñiga / MLB.com | 5/19/2015 10:50 PM ET Right-hander Shane Greene and the Tigers host veteran Kyle Lohse and the Brewers on Wednesday night at Comerica Park in the finale of an Interleague series, with Milwaukee seeking its first three-game sweep of the season. Lohse (3-4, 5.85 ERA) tossed his best game of the season Friday, when he limited the Mets to two hits over eight shutout innings. Looking for his third straight win, Lohse will face a Detroit lineup that's missing star designated hitter Victor Martinez, who on Tuesday was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation. Greene (4-2, 4.21 ERA) will be making his first appearance since being pulled from Friday's game against the Cardinals with mild nerve inflammation in his right elbow. The 26-year-old hasn't felt any tingling or discomfort since, though, and said Monday he's "relieved" to be healthy. Things to know for this game • With Victor Martinez on the disabled list, J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes will bat fourth and fifth, respectively, for the foreseeable future, according to Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "There's not many people that can protect [Miguel Cabrera], but I think J.D.'s our best option," Ausmus said. "I like 'Cespy' being able to clear the deck, so to speak." • Both teams could use their third different designated hitter of the series. The Brewers had Aramis Ramirez in the slot on Monday and Ryan Braun on Tuesday, while the Tigers replaced Victor Martinez with Tyler Collins for Game 2. • With an RBI single in the first inning on Tuesday, J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The longest such streak of his career lasted 14 games last year.

If you were the Mets GM, would you trade Syndergaard for Gomez?

They're probably going to continue to use the NBCSN overflow channels for any matches not on NBCSN or big-NBC, no?

Syndergaard set to make home debut against Crew By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | 5/16/2015 9:25 PM ET Citi Field will be buzzing Sunday afternoon when the latest promising Mets pitching prospect makes his home debut. Noah Syndergaard will work opposite Milwaukee's Wily Peralta as the Mets and Brewers finish a three-game series. It's Syndergaard's second big league start; the 6-foot-6 right-hander lost his debut last week at Wrigley Field. "A couple of weeks ago -- when I still had possession of my Twitter -- I saw reporters tweeting about the electricity and atmosphere at Citi Field," said Syndergaard, whose agent subsequently took control of his social media. "It's been something I've wanted to experience since that point. I'm looking forward to stepping on that mound." He's actually taken the mound before, as a Mets prospect in the 2013 All-Star Futures Game. This appearance will be different, and Syndergaard said he would build on lessons learned during a 5 1/3-inning, three-run outing against the Cubs in which all three runs scored in the sixth inning. The Mets lost, 6-1. "That was pretty awesome having my debut at Wrigley," he said. "There is a lot of history at that field. People keep telling me it's still the same game, but you don't really believe that until you step on the field. When I stepped on the field at Wrigley, that's when the nerves started letting up and I started focusing on pitching." Next, he'll step on the mound in front of friendly fans. Chalk it up as another in a series of experiences for a pitcher who won't turn 23 until the final week of August. "It's a little different atmosphere than being in the Futures Game," Syndergaard said. "But just getting out there and pitching in front of these fans is going to be an unbelievable experience." Things to know for this game • After posting a 5.68 ERA and allowing a .324 batting average against in his first three outings this season, Peralta has delivered four consecutive quality starts with a 2.42 ERA and a .286 average against. • Peralta has had success against the Mets. He's 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three career starts against them, including two wins and a 2.45 ERA last season. • Mets first baseman Lucas Duda has hit all three of his home runs in day games.

Brewers aim to stay hot at Citi Field vs. Mets, deGrom By Joe Trezza / MLB.com | 5/15/2015 10:20 PM ET The Brewers are in the middle of their first trip to Citi Field since last June, and it appears as if they missed the place. No visiting National League team has a better winning percentage at Citi since the ballpark opened in 2009 than Milwaukee (.700), which turns to Matt Garza when the two teams continue a three-game series Saturday. New York will counter with Jacob deGrom in an attempt to snap its first five-game losing streak of the season. Things to know about this game • Garza is coming off his best outing of the year, when he struck out nine over seven innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on May 10. deGrom also faced the Cubs his last time out, but he endured one of his worst performances of the season, allowing four walks and four runs over five innings. Both pitchers have dropped three of their last four decisions. • The Mets' bats went quiet again in Friday's 7-0 loss, with New York managing just two hits in eight innings against Kyle Lohse. It was the 13th time in 17 contests the Mets have scored three runs or fewer. New York remains in the NL's bottom five in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits and runs scored. • Friday's game was notable in that the Brewers played with a full bench for the first time in a week. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez had missed six consecutive starts with a stiff lower back, but he started against the Mets and was under no restrictions, according to manager Craig Counsell.

Juve-Barça is a really cool matchup... even though I know that Juve are evil incarnate (Kalle has helped me to understand!)
