  1. Recent history suggests that guys that sign early get more than guys that wait. Tell that to Prince Fielder.
  2. No news reported on the Loux situation in over a month now. I'm really curious to see where he winds up going. EDIT: Wrong, just found a tweet from Jim Callis on Nov. 1st: Was told today that a Barret Loux deal isn't imminent. Jibes with what I'm hearing from clubs as well.
  3. As joepepsi laid out, two reasonable scenarios in this specific discussion are 1) Braun in LF through 2015, no Lester ... 2) Gamel in LF through 2016*, Lester as #1 SP While it's certainly possible that Gamel could be used to add a SP, he alone wouldn't be capable of returning someone of Lester's quality. Going by WAR, Lester averages about one win better than Braun over the past 3 years (5.7 vs. 4.6). One win is something, but it's not enough risk premium for me, especially since I don't know if Lester is going to get any better than he already is and I think Braun has at least one 5 WAR season in him in the near future. Braun might have a 5 WAR season in him, but that's largely going to depend on whether he puts the work in to become a less horrible defender. Lester has already had three 5 WAR seasons in him, and projects to have many more left. This isn't much of a question for me; Lester is clearly the more valuable player imo. I'd be willing to trade that extra season that Braun has on his contract for the better player at the much more difficult position. I think that if we ran this idea past RedSoxfan.net, they'd think it was a bad idea for the Sawx. * -- just my estimate of how long Gamel is under team salary control... could be wrong
  4. .272/.328/.429/.757 (Link) I'm a huge Gamel supporter, and I don't hate McGehee. I hate how the Brewers have handled the development of Gamel the past two seasons.
  5. I agree completely. Lester is an absolutely dominant pitcher. I'd make that trade in a second. I understand the general risk of injury with pitchers, but you can't let that stand in your way of improving the team. Braun's contract is nice, so perhaps you could get Boston to include a prospect with Lester, but expecting much more for one of the top 10 pitchers in MLB is a bit greedy. Besides, Lester's contract is only one season shorter than Braun's; we'd be getting four seasons of Lester, which would be huge. But like most are saying, this sounds like complete hot air from Gammons. Honestly the team that I think wouldn't/shouldn't do this is Boston, not Milwaukee. Arms like Lester are much harder to find than LF/DH bats like Braun.
  6. Adam McCalvy's most recent blog post focused on a MLB.com interview with Hoffman. Hoffman stated he'd be interested in Arizona, whose new GM is longtime (former) Padres GM Kevin Towers. Towers recently was quoted as saying, "The bullpen, to me, is paramount. I think we definitely need to stay focused on that." Hoffman's agent has spoken with the D-Backs, but apparently not with Towers specifically yet. I know this is more Transactions forum fodder, but I didn't want to start a thread just to post this minor update.
  7. I don't think Gamel would hit nearly .290 just yet, but I definitely think the OBP & SLG numbers are about what could be expected.
  8. The FanGraphs article on this was, as usual, right on the money: maybe that has more to do with Uggla wanting off a terrible team than thinking he's worth more money. The Marlins weren't good in '10, but missed the NL Wild Card by just 5 games in '09. I think this is all about the money, honestly.
  9. What little I saw was excellent (only caught the jam with Jack White). I'm really glad Conan's show is back.
  10. From the McCalvy blog post that hawing linked... I thought people that disliked Macha would be happy to see Rags mention this --

  12. Rogers' delivery seemed so much smoother and easier than Jeffress' did. Jeffress just had so much movement in his that it seems like it would be really hard to repeat. In terms of just delivery, I honestly think Jeffress's is strikingly similar to Gallardo's. I didn't think Jeremy's delivery had that many moving parts, to be honest.
  13. Alabama-Huntsville I did *not* know hockey was played in Alabama.
  14. I think Jeffress is more expendable than Rogers at this point as well. I think the comparisons to Joba Chamberlain are apt. Will flirt with the rotation, but end up being a reliever. I'm curious what you're basing this on. There's been a some talk of BF lately about how Rogers's longterm value is greater than Jeffress's, and I just don't see it. Rogers's injury history is much more concerning, long-term, than anything that Jeffress has to worry about.
  15. But Attanasio couldn't have had interest in Valentine -- he's not from California
  16. Man, you have to be the happiest person about where you live that I've ever seen. This post cracked me up. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. I agree, but they should still be bunting when guys are on base to let Weeks get a chance to bat with guys in scoring position (if he's still hitting leadoff). I don't agree with this as a blanket, all-the-time policy. In situations where bunting makes sense (i.e. close & late), sure.
  18. Sadly, I think I'd argue that Yo, Wolf, & Narveson are all better hitters at this point than Escobar. Wolf is probably closer to being equal to Escobar than being better, though (just imo).
  19. I like 2° Below, and Pyramid's Snow Cap Ale is a good (Oregon) winter warmer that is available in WI. I wish Jubilale (Deschutes) were, but oh well.
  20. That's because we have no pitching! So why aren't we going out and getting pitching? As best I understand it, TheCrew07's main point is to build something organizationally so you don't have to go out & get IMPACT PITCHING from other organizations. I'm assuming he'd rather see multiple trades to bring in guys still in the minors, rather than burning up several of the Brewers' top prospects just to get one player... and in Greinke's case, one player that would only be guaranteed to be with the team for two seasons. Then you're left with the same problem again, but three/four/whatever fewer prospects to go out & acquire another IMPACT PITCHER.
  21. 1. http://brewersfandemonium...eply/675734#reply-675734 2. 20 posts/page 3. Blank page 4. Backupcatchers, posted 11/5 at 1:43p CT, starts with "If we could get a Cappy deal done quickly that would give us more options with a Prince trade." I hadn't seen the blank page bug on this short a topic prior to this, and that's the only reason I'm posting this. (reply #19/21 in topic --1992)
  22. You're arguing that a sample of 325 PAs tells us more than a sample of 1200+ PAs? Come on. Adrian Gonzalez has a very similar home/road BABIP split, and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't try to argue he's just an .800 OPS guy because he gets lucky on the road. Loney's a solid hitter that gets killed by his home park. He might not be a .300/.360/.495/.855 true talent, but I think a .350 OBP & .475-ish SLG is a very reasonable projection for him outside of Dodger Stadium.
  23. I don't think Gomez or Escobar can get on base enough to steal 40.
  24. I'm going to blissfully & ignorantly hope that Ron Roenicke isn't going to be Runnin' Ron Roenicke, or Giving-Outs-Away Ron Roenicke. Because that's kind of the impression I got of him in reading about him prior to the official hire. And this press conference doesn't sound like any of the stuff I read was off-base. I'll try to be optimistic about this hire, but I think I'm going to have a hard time. I also love that Roenicke said he will make an effort to get to know all of his players and keep up on their lives. That's something that Macha definitely didn't do. He failed to get to know Prince and Braun as well, which were two of the guys that were most important to the team. I definitely got the impression that it was Fielder & Braun that made their relationships with Macha tricky, not the other way around.
