  1. Carlos Lee, 2010 Slash Line: .246/.291/.417/.708 FRAA: -15.9 (Fldg. Runs Above Avg.) WAR: -0.8 Dollar Value: -$3M Actual Salary: $18.5M** Lee is guaranteed $18.5M each season through 2012 Among players who played enough to qualify, Lee was the second-worst position player in baseball in 2010. I guess El Caballo's only consolation is that Melky Cabrera's dollar value was -$4.9M.
  2. The hiring of Sveum might simply mean that the Brewers know who they want to hire, and that individual is cool with Dale as hitting coach. This is exactly what I think it is. Nothing more.
  3. It was sort of a "holy grail" for beer nerds and after picking up a four-pack I can tell why. It tastes like Guinness - only more. Sounds like what it tastes like across the pond. I must get some.
  4. I'd be looking for a job elsewhere unless I was happy with my current position and not interested in the least in career advancement. If he wanted out so badly & felt so mistreated, no one held a gun to his head on this 2-yr. extension. Clearly he likes something about the position.
  5. I'm confused ... then why did you start the thread with this title?
  6. Next Mgr. thread: http://brewersfandemonium...eply/659511#reply-659511 20 posts/page Blank page MNBrew's post #560 (October 23, 2010 10:52 AM) is the one that clicking on the baseball icon should've taken me to view. Post starts with: "I'm not crazy about Roenicke, but as a friend of mine pointed out, he's been a coach under Mike Scioscia for nearly a decade, and there's much to like about Scioscia and the ways his Angels teams play the game." Note: This happens to me in that thread almost everytime. I'm guessing you know already, but it seems like certain threads are plagued with that problem, rather than it being just a general thing that happens all over the place. It seems to me that most threads always work fine, and some thread always give me a problem. I'll second this observation, esp. the bolded part. Good call, Sam. EDIT: And Casey, please let us know where & when to cast our votes http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. If Melvin doesn't hire his choice Melvin or 2nd choice Listach, and Roenicke or Wallach get the job, you can tell who made the decision. No doubt about it. But Bob Melvin was born in Palo Alto. If Melvin hires him, it proves he's been in on the conspiracy all along!
  8. I in this argument am not taking my own position on UZR, I am merely pointing out that Casey's UZR performance in 2010 doesn't support logan's claim. It seems like you're disagreeing just for the sake of disagreeing. Here's what he actually said about McGehee: logan appears to have Casey pegged somewhere between "bad" & "below average". He thinks Gamel should be played at third since he believes Mat has better tools than Casey. You agreed that McGehee's performance in 2010 was below-avg. Are you really going to this much trouble just to rally for "not good" over "bad"? It's clear to anyone that wants to read logan's posts that he isn't calling Casey McGehee the worst fielder in the league or anything like that. This just seems like an argument over semantics, and not anything constructive. logan is trying to use the fact that Casey being 16th out of 19th in UZR/150 in 2010 is evidence that Casey shouldn't stay at 3B, because he can't handle it logan isn't trying to use that, he *is* using that -- just not as his entire argument. He's saying McGehee shouldn't be there because he isn't an asset there on defense, and that he believes Gamel could be (& that it's worthwhile to find out). He used UZR to help support that position, not as the only basis -- and it's easy to see that from his posts. I don't understand what's gained from nitpicking this so much.
  9. I liked how his enthusiasm and "players" style turned around Colorado. I don't know what happened to make the wheels fall off though. Does anyone have any more info? Did he lose his players after a fashion? But did he actually turn anything around & then lose anything? Or was it just baseball being baseball & being fluky?
  10. Still running into this bug, for whatever that's worth.
  11. I didn't like the "HB" logo (thought it was a bit cluttered). This one looks better imo, but only marginally.
  12. FanGraphs post NPBTracker.com post Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker wrote both pieces
  13. Managers & coaches vote on those, but that's the general idea
  14. Congrats to Ray, but definitely stinks to lose another talented member of the scouting operation.
  15. And there, folks, are the people from Milwaukee who vote on the major MLB/HoF ballots. Now multiply that by 31 other markets, and remember it the next time a major award's voting results in an odd outcome.
  16. Even putting aside all the minor league talent to give up just to get Greinke here, the 2 years $27 million is a stiff price to pay and a bit of a risk It's not that big of a risk. The Brewers have a lot of money coming off the books this offseason, and Greinke will easily be worth his AAVs of $13.5M. If the Brewers aren't competitive, they can deal him away. And it's not fair in any sense to hold Roy Halladay not wanting to come to MIL (no-trade clause) against Melvin.
  17. Maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention, but what exactly has Texas been lucky on? The Rangers have had seemingly a ton of seeing-eye singles. They've been extremely lucky with batted balls in play imho. Lots of balls not hit very hard that found the holes.
  18. From link in TH's post, excerpt from the blog entry by Sam Mellinger: Granted, this reads like Mellinger's own speculation, but would that mean something like Gamel+Rogers/Jeffress+Lawrie? If Mellinger is correct, I'd have to think that's about what the Brewers would have to give. And from a link in Mellinger's post, excerpt from an article by Royals beat writer Bob Dutton: Gamel+Rogers would seem to be the starting point, if both of these writers' postulation is correct. If the Brewers could complete this deal from there without having to include Lawrie & Jeffress, I'd be ecstatic. Maybe Odorizzi as the third piece?
  19. I know a lot of people don't want to thin out the system to acquire one player, and I think many of those people don't think the team is close to contending, at least not for next year. However, I really doubt the team views it the same way, especially ownership. We've seen what a pitcher like Cliff Lee can do for a team, and we know first-hand after having Sabathia for a handful of months two years ago. One player on paper may not significantly transform the team, but a player of Greinke's ability could transcend this team and take them to the next level. I think I'm one of those "people", and I agree that my hesitancy is due to not thinking one player will make a big enough difference. But you make a good point about the value of an ace. I think the only thing I'd want to be sure to do is retain one of Jeffress/Rogers. And I think the Brewers should still have the prospects to get this done without losing both of those arms. That said, if Grienke's 2009 K rate is merely a fluky blip on the radar, is he really worth dealing for as if he's the equivalent of a Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay?
  20. I'm admittedly not into "deep" stats, but I know Gamel is an error machine and that hasn't changed greatly. Some here, though, would point to his UZR and suggest he's a good defensive 3B because of his range. Gamel doesn't have a good UZR, and isn't liked by any advanced defensive metric I've seen (but then again he hasn't logged anywhere near enough MLB innings for any stat to describe his ability in a useful manner). My belief in him, in terms of defense, is in his physical tools. Weeks is a very useful comparison -- raw guy, but good upside.
  21. Weeks & Hart were both by far more consistent hitters this season than McGehee, and better hitters overall. I won't begrudge you liking McGehee, but he was neither the best nor most consistent hitter not named Braun or Fielder this season (or over his 1+ year career). And I'll take Fielder being able to destroy RHP over McGehee being able to destroy LHP since hitters face RHP 2/3 - 4/3 of the time.
  22. Either corner IF spot or corner OF spot. Hart & Braun make it pretty clear there's probably not room in the OF, but if the Brewers decide to keep Fielder either McGehee or Gamel will probably be traded. If McGehee goes, Gamel takes over at 3B. If Fielder goes, Gamel/McGehee handle the corner IF spots.
  23. I'd still like to see those AAA stats show themselves at the big club level before I assume Gamel can be penciled in if others go. How do you feel about Escobar & Lucroy? Because they were nowhere close to being the kind of hitter Gamel has been in the minors, and have showed next to nothing at the MLB level. Gamel is an .800 OPS, OPB-heavy bat right now. And I believe he's going to be better than that. At this point I've given up caring where the Brewers will play him, I just want to see him in the everyday lineup. He's the kind of hitter you imagine in a hypothetical, 'What type of hitter is this lineup missing?' question. If the Brewers decide to retain Prince for '10, there are going to be numerous suggestions of LH hitting, high-OBP type bats for the OF or corner IF around here (think Damon, etc.). The Brewers already have him, & he's available for the league-minimum salary. I'm starting to think he's going to be traded this offseason, though.
  24. That's what I thought too, RockCo. I was a little surprised Casey didn't win the "Good Guy" award... but I guess if he wins the MVP, you don't freeze out THE Trevor Hoffman http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  25. Yeah, if Valentine has to "cultivate" an interest to manage again, no thanks. It sounds as though he needs his butt kissed and a big chunk of change to pull him out of his cushy job with ESPN. I took his comments more to mean he'd only go back to manage if he were handed the keys to a luxury car like the Yankees.
