  1. I don't remember that. According to Hardicourt he was interviewed in 2002. I think I'd almost like Don Money only because he's fresh and has ties with a lot of the players. But I admit that's not a solid reason overall. None of the names mentioned do it for me really though. Ack, I got my former Arizona Bobs mixed up. I was thinking of Brenly. I really don't know much about Bob Melvin.
  2. I'd dismiss Melvin as just pure speculation, but he was actually interviewed two offseasons ago. I want no part of him as manager.
  3. While I appreciate that Bautista made the mechanical adjustment(s) to his swing, his HR/FB rate this season is 21.3%, compared to a career rate of 13.5%. I doubt he'll ever hit 40 again.
  4. His road OPS this season so far is .917, which is still very impressive. His OPS+ of 144 is far & away the best from the SS position. The next closest SS is Hanley Ramirez at 125.
  5. Wow, I'd forgotten just how badly the Zito & Rowand contracts have hamstrung that club. I would imagine they'll buy out Renteria, & non-tender Ross, but you're right. They don't have much payroll room at all.
  6. How does keeping the same team improve their offense? How does moving a good pitcher for a good hitter (at a position where offense isn't hard to find) make their team better? Huff has been worth 5 WAR so far this season, Cain 4, Fielder almost 4. Like you often mention about the Brewers, the Giants can go sign a bat in the OF like Werth. I just think moving Cain would be counter-productive for them, or spinning their wheels at best.
  7. Hindsight being what it is, I really wish the Brewers had drafted Tulo instead of Braun. And just for comparison's sake, their September slash stats so far -- Braun: .339/.369/.581/.950 Tulo: .371/.421/1.057/1.478 Wow.
  8. Or they could just re-sign Aubrey Huff & keep Cain
  9. Thanks for this info, cc. I came to this IGT to ask why Lincecum had been taken out of the game so early (72 pitches!). I didn't watch the game today, & couldn't figure out why he'd been lifted from the game log & recap story on Yahoo.
  10. Thank goodness vastly overrated managers like Torre & Guillen are too "high-profile" for Milwaukee. Neither one is a good manager. It doesn't really matter who the Brewers hire. All managers are essentially equal in terms of skill & impact. I almost want to hold out hope that the Brewers won't just hire another Baseball Guy™, but then I remind myself that Doug Melvin will be the one making the hire. I wish I could get more optimistic and/or excited about this topic.
  11. You guys do a great job. Thank you!
  12. Somebody call those Saintly Cardinals!
  13. I'm not attempting to predict any of that, just operating on the assumption that the Brewers are going to continue to have to maximize player value since they won't be developing into a big market. I'm talking about trying to win more games next season and 2012. I'm all about him being up from day one in 2012, when I think the Brewers will be a contending team. But I'm not at all interested in burning up a full season for Rogers in '11 so he could (best-case hypothetical) add maybe one win over the first two months of the season. Not to mention the fact that this one hypothetical win probably takes the team from roughly 79 wins to 80. Sveumrules, I don't think the Padres comparison/suggestion is useful for the '11 Brewers -- that team's resurgence is due entirely to having one great player on offense, one great starter, and a bunch of bullpen guys having career years (seriously their bullpen's performance has been staggering). Just for comparison's sake, the Cards' OPS+/ERA+ is 99/110, compared to the Pads' 94/110 so far this season.
  14. Strangely enough, he's barely hit into more DPs than last season, even with 200 more PAs this season. 13 GDPs in '09, 16 in '10. I assumed the same thing as you did.
  15. This has become an almost robotic response to prospect call-ups in Milwaukee. It's not just about his salary costs to the Brewers, it's value in potential trade down the road as well. All you really need to do to keep Rogers's service time down is call him up in June, so it's not like he'd have to spend most of the season in AAA (even though I'd like to see him do so unless he forces the Brewers' hand).
  16. I like Oktoberfests quite a bit. Picked up six-packs of Spaten's & Flying Dog's. I like the Spaten better (go figure).
  17. Ah, I'd forgotten that. His avg. fastball velocity in the bigs so far is roughly 96 mph. Not sure if he's just been asked to take it easy on his arm or what, but there's a (relatively) big difference btw. 96 & 100. I hope I'm very wrong on my cynicism, and I don't want to give the impression in any way that I'm not completely excited about Rogers. I'd just expected to see, as a reliever, Rogers's best velocity.
  18. Thanks for making this its own thread mods, I thought it might've fit better in the old one.
  19. From Adam McCalvy's Brew Beat blog -- Anderson back on TBS Postseason team Not really surprising news, but congrats to BA nonetheless.
  20. Congratulations, Mac. Enjoy your son!
  21. The guy is still young and can touch 100 mph with movement. After seeing him throw with the Brewers, I have serious doubts that the radar readings of him touching 101 were accurate. I think he'll legitimately operate in the mid to upper 90s with movement, though, and that's obv. nothing to sneeze at.
  22. The downside is service time. There is really no reason the Brewers should burn a full season of Rogers in '11 when the big-league club is very unlikely to contend.
  23. Agreed, start Jeffress off in Huntsville with a quick promotion to Nashville. Both guys should spend most of the season in AAA.
  24. While you're right that Tampa hasn't done that much in the past (Burrell is an exception as a higher-priced addition), adding Fielder for 2011 would actually make a lot of sense for them. They're going to have a big-time need at 1B, and are definitely in a win-now position. They can let Prince walk in FA & take a comp pick or two for him. That would fit their m.o. to me, at least. Pena has only been 1.1 WAR so far this season, while Prince sits at 4.0. I realize it's not as simple as plugging in last year's numbers for next year's projections... however, Prince would not only be an elite hitter for the Rays, he'd most likely be a big upgrade for them as well. Fielder's wOBA from May through present-day is over .400, and if he continues his torrid September, he'll post his 3rd season of a .400 or better wOBA (out of 5 full seasons). Pena has done that just once, but I realize he's not TB's only other option.
  25. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, since Macha said he won't sit McGehee until he gets to 100 RBI. This was an "emergency" sort of start, and that's the only reason Gamel saw the field. Macha doesn't like the guy, and will go out of his way to not play him, it seems.
