  1. Ran across this entertaining Twitter account at FanGraphs: CYBORG HANSON TOMMY
  2. I agree with trwi7. Gomez really needs a wake-up call imo. He's shown no change in approach, or really that he thinks he has to improve all that much to deserve a starting job. I wonder what X ellence's thoughts on this will be http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. Responding to a post in the Bye Mr. Prince thread... That AAV is derived from only counting what money is guaranteed Cano, just fwiw. He has two club options on the back end of his deal with $2M buyouts. If you include the salaries for '12 & '13, the AAV jumps to $9.5M for a 6-year deal. Barring a catastrophic injury, I don't see Cano's options not getting picked up. Below is a crude list of highest-paid 2B by AAV, as paid during FA-eligible seasons (as in, past-arby), assuming all future options will be exercised: 1. Chase Utley $15,000,000 (2010-13) 2. Robinson Cano $13,000,000 (2011-13) 3. Brandon Phillips $10,500,000 (2011-12) 4. Dustin Pedroia $10,333,333 (2009-14) 5. Brian Roberts $10,000,000 (2010-13) 5. Luis Castillo $6,250,000 (2008-11) 6. Mark Ellis $5,500,000 (2009-10) Please, anyone, correct me if I've made errors or omissions. Weeks has one more arbitration-eligible season, so I'd guess at least $6-7M for that season alone. After that, it would appear the Brewers would need to match roughly $10M per season. On a 4-year deal, that'd be ~$37M with an AAV of ~$9.25M. If 2010 is a reasonable expectation for Weeks going forward, he would more than earn that money. Something tells me 4/$37M would be a bit short of getting a deal done; somewhere in between $37M & $42M or so for four years would hopefully do it.
  4. Thanks for the hard work on this, as always. The one thing that stands out to me at this point is that the Brewers need more bats in the system. At this point, it seems to me that it's Lawrie, Kentrail Davis, and then everyone else. One nit-picky issue -- Komatsu isn't 23 yet, if his birthdate is correct on his BF profile. I feel more excited about his 2010 campaign given that it was in his age-22 season.
  5. Endder's looking like Nostradamus with this post. Just thought it'd be interesting to re-visit what people think of Jack Z now that the 2010 season is basically over.
  6. Fwiw, the article MLBTR cited is here.
  7. Man, the D-Backs must be equal parts excited & nervous about this draft. They could really make a big-time impact with those two picks, given how deep this year's class is regarded as being.
  8. Players from Latin America haven't had those limits and have shoulders that have built up enough strength to take the abuse of pitching and pitching a lot. Unless they were signed at 15 or 16 by big-league clubs & tracked through the MiLB system. If I'm understanding correctly, your stance is that pitchers who defect from Cuba are more durable than other pitchers?
  9. It connected plenty at AAA. One thing that no one should worry about is whether or not Gamel will hit at the big-league level. Not exactly easy to see the ball, hit the ball when you get an at-bat every other day or so. Kind of nice to see Macha using Mat a bit more lately, if only as a pinch-hitter. He's gotten one PA in each of the past 5 games.
  10. I wondered if that was the same Rick Braun. Funny.
  11. That's not happening! If the team trades 2 hitters, it will sign 1. Werth, Crawford, or Beltre would help keep this a formidible offense. Two Boras clients & the guy that'll probably be the most sought after position player this offseason (Crawford). While I understand you want the Brewers to go out & spend $25M this offseason, I don't see it happening. Seems like spending money for the sake of spending money to me. I would personally love to see them sign Beltre if Mat Gamel is no longer seen as a third baseman, though. Trouble with that is Beltre's coming off a career year & has immense value to Boston, not to mention his representation & high value as a FA otherwise. And I really don't understand your assertion that McGehee would play 2B. He's bad at 3B, so let's move him to a more difficult position that relies even more on his weakness of range & athletic ability? Makes no sense to me.
  12. This is one of my favorite posts ever
  13. Sheets wins the Catfish Hunter Award, voted on by Oakland players & coaches. The award "recognizes... contributions to the team both on and off the field." Fortunately Ben's injury hasn't dampened his sense of humor: "I don't know if it's that they really like me or I threatened their lives," Sheets joked over a conference call. "I'm pretty tough."
  14. One more RBI for McGehee & we find out if Macha actually meant Gamel will get playing time, or if he'll come up with another way to say "I don't like him" & keep him on the bench.
  15. Like I posted, with other players getting raises, it's not quite this simple, even with cutting loose the additional ~$7M from Wheeler & Qualls. They'll get close to $50M, but not under without moving more additional salary/ies. My guesstimate is that they'll still need to cut $5-10M to get to where the owner claims they need to be.
  16. Portland is close behind Tampa/St. Pete in size, so I guess that's an option, but they already have the Portland Beavers AAA club. Not anymore. Their owner acquired an expansion MLS club, and couldn't get a deal done with the city to build a baseball-only facility (MLS insisted they retrofit PGE Park to be a soccer & football only facility). One big reason why the Beavers died (for now) is that almost no one gave a crap about them -- their attendance stunk. I'm not convinced Portland is a good option for a MLB franchise. Most local fans cheer for the Mariners, and the Seahawks in the NFL. I'd go with almost any other city on that list just as much as I'd go with Portland. Charlotte makes some sense to me -- far enough away from an existing franchise & they support two other major pro sports teams... three if you count the NHL's Hurricanes.
  17. I think the chances of Attanasio picking up a significant portion of Fielder's salary to produce for another team next year is about as likely as him increasing the payroll to a half a billion dollars next year. I'd like to think Mark is a smart enough investor that he could see the wisdom in essentially buying more and/or higher quality players in return for Prince, rather than settling for an average return.
  18. I see no reason we couldn't pick up most of Fielder's salary if the return is good enough. That's true. Didn't think of that.
  19. Given their owner's recent comments on the Rays' finances, I don't see them as a fit anymore. Team-building-wise, they're a perfect fit. But unless Melvin can orchestrate some mega-deal, Fielder's '11 salary doesn't fit for them at all.
  20. No, I think the Brewers absolutely could get more for Weeks. Provided he plays a full season, he's probably a more valuable player than Fielder unless Prince puts up like a 1.000 OPS & doesn't completely stink in the field.
  21. All per Cot's Contracts... Opening Day Payroll of $72.85M Notable money coming off the books Carlos Pena: $10.125M Carl Crawford: $10M Rafael Soriano: $7.25M Chad Qualls: $4.185M Dan Wheeler: $4M ($1M buyout) Total: $34.56M (factors in $1M buyout for Wheeler) Other guys will get arbitration raises & contract raises... Ben Zobrist: +$4M Andy Sonnanstine: Arby year 1 Evan Longoria: +$1.05M Jeff Niemann: +? (signed MLB deal out of the '05 draft; $1.032M in '10) J.P. Howell: Arby year 2 ($1.8M in '10) Grant Balfour: Arby year 3 ($2.05M in '10) Dioner Navarro: Arby year 3 ($2.1M in '10) James Shields: +$1.75M B.J. Upton: Arby year 2 ($3.0M in '10) Matt Garza: Arby year 2 ($3.35M in '10) Jason Bartlett: Arby year 3 ($4M in '10) Brad Hawpe has an option for '11 of $10M, but a $500K buyout that I'm assuming the club will exercise. Navarro could be a non-tender candidate with the emergence of John Jaso, which would free up another $2M or so. I'm really not sure what to expect in terms of net arbitration raises, but is it out of the realm of believability that the Rays might only see a total increase of ~$15-20M from this group? If that's true, the Rays cut roughly $15-20M of the $20-25M they need to trim simply by rolling over the season. I omitted any players that weren't seeing their salaries increase by at least $1M (excluding possible arbitration outcomes, of course).
  22. Picking from the initial 5... Jeffress, Rogers, Cain
  23. Buck Showalter, career .517 managerial record. 5 losing seasons, 6 winning seasons. There's really nothing to say aside from small sample. Fwiw Baseball-Reference has Showalter's record at 28-17.
