  1. Being interesting/thoughtful are something you don't want to see on a scouting report that usually means you are a AAAA player or worse a career minor leaguer. It actually read to me like he was making a completely different, throw-in point. That's quite the leap in logic from you.
  2. Hold the phone on declaring Jackson a huge overpay for Granderson. He's hit all of 1 HR so far this season, and the .425 BABIP (.470 v. RHP!) certainly suggests his production won't be sustainable for this season. Not to mention the fact that his strikeout rate has been high (once every 3.88 PA), and his walk rate has been low (once every 14.9 PA). I like Jackson, and I think everyone involved in the deal knew he was/is good. The Yankees felt Granderson was a solid comparison for Jackson's ceiling, so they pulled the trigger on the deal. Granderson's season to this point is so far below his career norms I don't think it's accurate to use to say it was a bad trade. I think trading Gamel makes more sense right now. Obviously the Brewer front office likes McGehee better or Gamel would be playing some. My guess is that you're right on the braintrust liking McGehee more, but my worry is that it's because he's the 'better person', not the better player. I can understand the F.O. being frustrated with Mat's injury this season & placing him in the minors... not to mention that McGehee probably deserved the shot, at least in the eyes of the F.O., to show if he could replicate his offensive prowess from '09. I think trading McGehee would make much more sense than trading Gamel at this point, if you're talking about just trading one guy. If it's part of a package, I could stomach Gamel going in return for TheCrew07's infamous IMPACT PITCHING.
  3. The first one I can think of just off my head is that they gave up Neftali Feliz as part of the package to get Teixeira back in '07. Feliz has pitched very well in the bigs so far (albeit as a relief ace/CP). The Braves also traded away Adam Wainwright to the Cards as part of a deal to get J.D. Drew & Eli Marrero. I could dig further to see about any others, but Wainwright alone should be ample proof that the Braves don't have a magical power to identify pitching that other teams don't. They certainly seem to be among the best in the league at identifying pitching, though.
  4. Mat's slash line now stands at .295/.389/.482/.873, and if you adjust for park & luck at minorleaguesplits, it's at .349/.434/.548/.982. Love to see him raking again. I just hope he isn't traded unless it's as part of a deal for an elite pitcher.
  5. Color me a skeptic on Braves pitching since Jose Capellan. Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens... yes I know Jurrjens came up with the Tigers, but the Braves identified him well. And the Braves haven't offered up Delgado or Beachy from anything I've seen, so that would be the Brewers picking their own guys.
  6. When the season is lost & you're talking about arguably your most valuable young bullpen arm, you most definitely put his workload ahead of his "situation". To be honest, the Brewers might just be being careful here. I thought I read shoulder or arm fatigue as his injury.
  7. It's not his foibles, which is precisely why it doesn't seem as bad as it is. He's the classic 'makes all the plays he can get to' guy -- trouble is that he has basically zero range, and just doesn't get to a lot of balls that other 3B do. By any fielding metric I've seen this season, he's near or at the bottom of the fulltime third basemen in the league. I will agree in terms of strictly fielding, he's not bad... he's actually quite good at fielding. It's his range that's the big problem.
  8. It's a good thing Gamel isn't underachieving then http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. I just saw that. And I agree completely that I'd love to see Melvin include something else if that meant getting both Beachy & Delgado. Who knows, though, with so many teams in the market for an impact OF bat, maybe he wouldn't even have to include anything else.
  10. Angels sent RHP Sean O'Sullivan & LHP Will Smith (a minor-leaguer). Link Doesn't seem like a move the Angels are making to realistically impact this season, but moreso a guy that can be a 3B option this season, and a utility player for them over the next three seasons -- which are his arbitration years.
  11. Delgado... keep in mind he's still only 20 & thin (think projectionable) so he should add some MPH's as his body matures This was one thing I thought when looking into him a bit more. I highly doubt the Braves would part with both Delgado and Beachy for Hart, but at this point I think I'd be happy with either one.
  12. Sounds like NE WI doesn't have it quite as bad, but I just spent an hour & a half playing Sisyphus with the water in the basement. Maybe I did some good, maybe not. Second time this month I've had to do that, and I'm sure there will be plenty more for me tomorrow as the groundwater continues to drain.
  13. Delgado's player page notes "Class A Advanced Carolina League" I would definitely "settle" on a 20-yo that has dominated high-A ball to the tune of 9.2 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, & a 2.76 ERA over 20 starts. He's been even better than Odorizzi has, at the next level up. In fact, after looking into him some more, if Melvin could get Delgado, I would be ecstatic.
  14. I'd keep him for now until he gets pricier This is my stance on McGehee. Let's say Gamel continues to falter. Link That was posted on July 16th. As of today on MinorLeagueSplits, the line adjusted in the same way is .335/.423/.500/.923. Gamel isn't faltering, it just took him a while to get going after the frustrating injury in ST. He's still a very legit bat.
  15. Since Fielder is a better contact hitter, he might wind up being a more valuable hitter than Dunn over the next 4 seasons. But not $20-30M or so more valuable.
  16. Easily? Come on. He's been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball for the past decade. And there's a reason they're called "old player" skills -- they're what old guys still have left once speed & athleticism have gone. I would much rather sign Adam Dunn to a 3 or 4 year deal than the 6 or 7 years & insane dollars Prince is going to get. EDIT: Jim Thome's a decent comparison for Dunn, even though Thome's peak was definitely higher than Dunn's. Neither one ever realistically had more than "old player" skills, and Thome was able to sustain his production at a peak level through his age 34 season, and even replicate it in his age-36 season. His age-36 season is made even more impressive given that he lost 83 games in '05 to an elbow injury.
  17. The Dodgers show you how real men take care of business. Two games off the wild card lead? No problem -- just lose your best pitcher for one of his starts. It's not like the Wild Card race could come down to one game or anything. What's more important is that you've shown all of us how manly you are.
  18. The Lloyd impersonation is spot-on
  19. Lawrie has a lot of work to do yet. Minorleaguespits.com and FirstInning.com has his LD% at an anemic 11% I may be wrong, but iirc there was a lot of questioning on BF about some other (again, iirc) Huntsville players' LD rates. Much like MiLB error totals, it's possible that pbp data from MiLB games may not be reliable. I find it nearly impossible to believe that a guy with a .289 AVG, .457 SLG, and 41 XBH -- inlcuding 11 triples -- in just 419 PAs is only hitting line drives roughly 10% of the time. Think about that -- 41/419 is nearly 10%, so we're basically supposed to believe that not only has he hit several bleeders down the RF/LF lines that've gone for extra bases, but that almost all of his singles have been grounders. I just don't see that as possible. EDIT: And would LD% only be on balls batted in play, total PA, total AB?
  20. I don't think Sanchez will realistically get any better than he is right now. His xFIP has been right around 4.20 each of the past three seasons, and is 4.28 right now. I think you're right that he's probably the more fair return for Hart than Bumgarner, but what I want is Melvin to use the leverage he has in there likely being multiple suitors for Hart.
  21. But does it actually make teams think twice, or just let them know you're easy to rile up? There has to be a balance imo, and Macha's approach appears to be as close to 'never hit a batter on purpose' as it gets. A 4-game suspension isn't really that big-time a punishment. I'd like to see far more severe suspensions for cases as obvious as Venters's.
  22. I really, really wish we'd stop hearing the either/or talk on Sanchez & Bumgarner. Bumgarner is a much more valuable commodity. I really hope this doesn't mean that Melvin is asking for either one or the other. I'd rather him focus on Bumgarner, & if the Giants won't do that, move on. There really appears to be some potential competition for Hart, so Melvin shouldn't settle.
  23. Beckham also has a positive UZR/150 rating too, so while the errors aren't nice, overall his value on defense has been positive so far. I've linked to both of the following scouting reports, but have only copied & pasted the defensive notes in this post. Here's MLB.com's scouting report from the 2008 Draft -- Arm Strength: His arm grades out as average to a tick above and plays fine from shortstop.Fielding: He's a very natural defender, but he's fighting his size a bit at short and might profile better as a second baseman.Range: He has above-average range. Sorry for the poor formatting. And here's another draft-day-ish scouting report, from Baseball-Intellect.com -- DefenseA major factor for whether a team will ultimately use a high draft choice on Beckham will be if the team thinks Beckham can stay at shortstop. Some feel Beckham will eventually have to move to second, but from various reports, Beckham possesses a strong arm and his instincts are reported to be excellent, making up for any lack of range he may have.
