  1. Good grief, he's awful in so many different ways. I guess that makes him versatile.
  2. This gets my vote. I took 4 years of German in h.s., and basically wound up only using it to get retro-credits at UW. One reason I took German is that everyone was taking Spanish, so I tried something different. I regret not taking Spanish for precisely the reason TracyThom mentions. Plus it's useful on a day-to-day basis, just in interacting with people.
  3. So if you are considering a player as a bench player/pinch hitter, it would make no sense to look at his stats as a pinch hitter or with runners on base/in scoring position, the situations that person would predominantly be in? Yes, because they are tiny samples & fluctuate a lot. What Katin has done this season w/RISP &/or men on base has little or nothing to do with what he will do in the future. I agree with you that Katin would probably be a solid bench option for the Brewers, but not because of a tiny sample of RISP & men on base PAs.
  4. White Sox were 9.5 back on June 8th - 20 days later they are 2 games back All the .447 Brewers need to do is win 15 of the next 16 and they're right back in this thing! It *could* happen, but I could win the lottery tomorrow, too.
  5. I was referring to an overall stance of being buyers as to why I was frustrated, not just Prince's status.
  6. The clear answer is to bat Escobar 2nd. It activates a hidden microchip that turns him into a useful hitter.
  7. That ignores the context, Baldkin. Attanasio was asked if the Brewers were in more of a sell mode or buy mode. He said buy. I wanted to punch something.
  8. It's not that I disagree with you that Katin might be a better fit right now than Gerut. It's that your claims about Gerut being so overhyped & useless that I take issue with. Not going to respond more in the thread... moving to PM.
  9. I really wasn't going to respond to the Gerut thing since it was so old relative to this discussion, but here goes. OPS v. RHP year by year 2003: .923 (379 PA) 2004: .787 (373) ** tore his ACL 2005: .749 (159) 2008: .826 (288) 2009: .660 (266) I left out '06 & '07 because he didn't play in the bigs. I left out '10 because it's all of 53 PA (iirc). That's a career line against righties of .274/.334/.456/.790 (1,518 PA) for a guy that can help you on defense in CF. So, no, no one I've seen is citing one season. Besides, if anyone would do that, they'd cite '03. we can't possibly bring up a guy who's hitting for a good deal of power, plays good defense and has a cannon for an arm. I haven't seen Katin play in person. I've read a lot about his good power, and strong arm, but I've heard nothing about whether or not he plays good defense in right. Have you seen him play, or have you just read more about him than me? Honest question; not baiting you. I doubt he could handle CF.
  10. spare us the "he got lucky" mantra... Where are the ton of hard hit balls right at people? I can only speak for myself but I specifically mentioned he got lucky no crap hits dropped in or no funky bounce worked against him. Nothing about he got lucky because he was giving up line drives. He was completely dominant after the 3rd inning Yeah, but that's kind of the point. He wasn't very good at all for 1/3 of the game, and needed to almost literally throw his arm off. Impressive physical exhibition? Yes. Impressive no-hitter? No.
  11. Not sure if he'll be starting anytime soon. He asked to go to the bullpen iirc, and imo he'll be with the Timber Rattlers for a while yet.
  12. If you take the match as a whole, Ghana outplayed the US in the first half & overtime. The second half was really the only segment the US 'won'. I think the main problem for the US was mirrored in Ghana's accurate, crisp passing & sound possession of the ball. The US looked clunky & awkward in comparison, as they had at many times in the tournament. The US team still lacks enough finely-tuned skilled players imo. They have some great athletes, but all I think you need to look at from this game was the passing & possession. Ghana at times was beautiful to watch, while the US was too often desperate & flailing. Bradley's decisions on the starting lineups was a handicap not only today, when he had no substitutions left to bring on fresh legs in extra time, but at other points in the tourney as well. I have no idea why Clark started today ahead of Edu, or why Findley started again. Earlier in the WC I thought Findley's speed was a good asset to have, but he just never really seemed to put it to work. Buddle would have been a much more efficient choice, especially today with Altidore playing so poorly.
  13. Roles were definitely reversed in that second half. Ghana was essentially playing a 5-man back line with 3 mids, down the home stretch. Meanwhile the US was attacking well & controlling the ball. The Jozy Altidore sliding shot would have simply been a miracle, but it was a great play to just throw the defender (a pretty beefed-up looking Mensa) off him with his right arm, & the strike of the ball was pretty nice. Kingson has been very strong in goal for Ghana, but the defense in front of him hasn't impressed.
  14. Feilhaber on for Findley at the start of the second half. This could be a critical switch by Bradley.
  15. Tiny Gallon, an astronaut in the offseason http://twitter.com/tinygallon24 EDIT: Funny exchange btw. Bogut & Gallon:
  16. That was about as poor a half as anyone could've guessed the US would play. They played like a sloppy, uncoordinated side, and frankly are lucky to only be down 1-0. The more I see of Findley, the less I want to see. I'd like to see Buddle subbed in, but that would leave the US with only one more substitution, which they might need for Bocanegra. Ghana flat-out dominated the first half, and unless the US is able to pull a sea-change in the second half, this cup run will be over. The US defenders especially are overmatched by the Black Stars' quickness and athletic ability.
  17. He... continues to bring back an aging, non-performing core of players, and has little behind them in the minor leagues. The Cubs actually have a decent farm system. Starlin Castro is one of the top prospects in the game (regarded as better than Escobar by many). He was 16th in Baseball America's pre-2010 top 100 list, and the Cubs had 4 other players make the cut (though no one else higher than #70). For comparison's sake, 3 Brewers made the cut -- Escobar (12), Lawrie (59), and Gamel (89). The Crew's system is regarded as middle-of-the-pack at this point. Not great, but very solid. I agree with your take on Hendry in terms of his MLB roster construction, though. I don't think he's anything special.
  18. I'd say it's unbelievable, but it's Zambrano. They still have to pay him Fun with numbers -- '10: $17.85M '11: $17.85M '12: $18M '13: $19.25M (vesting player option) Want some icing on the cake? How about a full no-trade clause.
  19. I guess what it says to me is that a no-hitter can be more about luck & less about good pitching. Sometimes there are awesome performances that are no-nos, and sometimes Edwin Jackson walks 8 guys & gets completely lucky that one bloop hit or funky bounce didn't occur. I was thinking as he was going back out for the 9th, 'Can you imagine if he gets an out or two & gives up a hit?'
  20. At what point does Lawrie play into this? He could very easily be ready to come to the majors by 2012, and he could quite likely be a much better fielder than Weeks by that point. Lawrie's bat will play at any position, which is good for the Brewers. I've read nothing about him that suggests he can actually stick at 2B. Maybe 3B, but my guess is he's in RF or at 1B.
  21. Thank you, Tedaldtada! That was so cool. The real-time reaction clips are awesome.
  22. Sorry, thought I was clearer. I'm not overly concerned about this one instance. It's a pattern of being willing to let Gallardo work well past 100, 110 pitches that was taking place last season & is continuing to take place.
  23. Yeah, there's definitely a difference, but I'd like to see the Brewers stop working him so hard. It's not like this is a one-time thing. Macha rode him pretty hard last year, too, iirc.
  24. Another overworking of Gallardo today -- his 4th game of at least 120 pitches out of his 16 starts. Not a fan. It's clear that Macha could care less about overworking him, which, from Macha's p.o.v., I understand. But apparently he thinks it's fine to run a young arm into the ground, as long as you only let him throw around 105 pitches his next start. Then, after that, he's a-ok to get run into the ground again. What's most disappointing to me is that Doug Melvin doesn't see anything wrong with the 24-yo guy you just centered your franchise around throwing an average of 113 pitches per start since May. It sure was important to keep Yo in there with that 5-run lead today.
  25. Unbelievable. Italy & France knocked out, & England barely sneaking through group play. Never saw those coming.
