  1. One more season of 200-300 PAs isn't close to having Smith for 6 seasons. Even if Aoki had posted a better OPS than his .710, this was a smart trade.
  2. Late to this discussion, but I'm glad to see he's being moved & to a spot that utilizes his arm. On one hand, I'm disappointed that he wasn't tried at 3B... but on the other hand I feel like the Brewers, more than any other org, would try any guy they felt had a remote shot to stick at a position. So if the Brewers don't think it's worth trying him there... then I guess we just have to assume he can't hack it. I hope that the new position & Space Coast Stadium don't significantly affect Coulter's development with the bat. I'm really excited about him.
  3. Aoki is pretty bad going back on balls in the OF -- it's why he plays so deep.
  4. Works for association soccer! Problem being that in those leagues, each team plays the other teams an equal amount.
  5. My dream for the MLB postseason is just this. It'll never happen, because... money. But man, two leagues with two divisions each, & NO Wild Card... that's the best format imo.
  6. Are the Brewers risking missing out on any potential new coach candidates by waiting so long? Or is there a rule in place that teams can't contact new candidates before the end of the WS or something?
  7. It was great, Eugene. Glad you guys had fun! If you do head back to MP, please drop me a line.
  8. $8MM doesn't buy you much in MLB today. I kind of assume you're hinting at this, but it seems painfully obvious that the Cards are significantly better at identifying & developing talent -- especially pitching -- than the Brewers.
  9. This claim really isn't true. On the Brewers roster alone, you have a bunch of examples of guys with high character, & nearly everyone else with no stain on his name. Guys with track records like K-Rod are the rare exception & frankly don't deserve the chance to play at this level.
  10. This is where I come down on it, & by no means does it equate to "giving up on" Segura. I don't have serious concerns that he'll never make the necessary adjustments... I'm very much a believer in his talent as a hitter (I was hoping for him to be called up significantly earlier than the Brewers actually did), and his defense obviously speaks for itself. But for a club that I'm assuming will be looking to contend again in 2015, you have to explore & see if there are ways to make the team better. If one of those ways is to bring in more depth & competition in the MIF, then you'd be unwise to not pursue it. So for an example, if you can get a LH-swinging SS that can hit RHPs a bit & split Segura's time between SS & 2B, I think that's a decent avenue to explore. Even though I believe Jean will eventually be a .700-.750 OPS bat year in & year out, I'm not ready to say that for 2015 he should just be unchallenged for the starting spot.
  11. Interesting take. I guess I'm assuming that he'd be pretty well in demand given that he's not going to cost as much as a Sandoval or Hanley Ramirez (if the latter even entertains signing as a 3B). Overall, I think I come down on not wanting to see the club spend $13-15MM AAV on him... but I also think that if he were to be played at 1B he'd stay healthier & have better offensive production. Plus we can always move Braun back to 3B. Unless there's a deal in place to institute the designated hitter into the National League, I sure hope the good people of MLB Trade Rumors are incorrect on this one. 2/$25MM or so is about what I was assuming he'd be looking at in FA. Maybe more like 2/$20 given the assumed forfeiture of a draft pick.
  12. I'm sure I'd have a lonnnnng list of things to do if I had a time machine, but going back to watch a bunch of games of those mid-1950's Braves would be one item. I'd love to have been able to watch the Mathews--Aaron 1-2 punch.
  13. In the 'better a year too early than a year too late' mindset, this just seems like a perfect time to look to deal Lohse. The same is probably true with Ramirez -- probably was actually more true a couple seasons ago, frankly. Obviously now the Brewers can't trade him unless he picks up his side of the option. The best scenario for the org. going forward imo would be to pick up the club side of the option, have Aramis decline, & then offer him a QO. If he signs, great -- you likely have 3B or 1B covered for one more season, & you don't want to be tied to him past his age-37 season. If he declines the QO, you get a nice draft pick for him & let some other club overpay for him on like a 2-year deal.
  14. I was just trying to explain my line of reasoning. I didn't say Yo would be taken in the second round of a fantasy draft, but just wanted to point out that if you distribute the top NL SP ERAs one by one over the 15 NL teams, Yo'd be the 6th player 'distributed' in the second go-round the league, based on where his ERA ranked.
  15. So he was basically a #11/2 this season by ERA. It's surprising to me that a fringe-#1 ERA season isn't even north of 2.0 WAR Well, that puts him in the #3 starter region which makes him an average starter... which would be about 2.0 WAR. B-R, which uses ERA (fangraphs uses FIP) has him worth 2.4 WAR. Maybe I'm being dense... 15 teams in the NL, 21st in ERA... 21/15 = 1.4. Thinking of it in terms of like a fantasy draft, he'd be one of the first guys taken in the second round, so a #2. That was my thought process, anyway.

  17. Yeah, I think I'd be willing to go 3 years on Headley, but he might well see a fourth from someone. That he's a good defender imo will make GMs more willing to go further out in terms of years. I was under the impression he was among the best in baseball defensively and a GG caliber defender. This is always what I've heard/read about him, but I definitely haven't watched him play myself much at all
  18. He could tell the story about how he always remembers his dad untucking his shirt after a hard day's work...
  19. I'd be interested in taking a look at Headley as well. He's a good defender & a switch-hitter, & if he's available at a decent price I think he'd be a good buy-low candidate. You could then slide Aramis to 1B, improve your defense, & hopefully help Ramirez stay on the field more.
  20. I was at the game where both Rickie & Prince hit their first HRs. That's one of my favorite memories of him, along with a HR he hit a few years back in Miller Park... typical Weeks guided-laser flightpath, & it caromed off the wall behind the LF fence so hard that it bounced about halfway back to the infield. I hope others recall this, and if anyone can find the video for it, please post it! Weeks has been one of my all-time favorite Brewers, even if he hasn't been one of the all-time best the franchise has had. Great work ethic, attitude, & leadership. I have a lot of respect for him, & hope he lands somewhere outside of the NL Central next year & rips it up! Thanks for the years of humble hard work & service, Rickie. You will be missed.
  21. 2012 was a PED-free Braun.
  22. Nobody is saying he wasn't bad. How bad in certain areas is being exaggerated a bit, but either way, everyone agrees when he played 3rd base, he was very bad. But again, I just don't see much of a correlation between 3rd and 1st. The degree of difficulty in the average play at 1st is just so much lower than at 1st. I honestly don't think Corey Hart would have fared any better at 3rd, much like how most 1st basemen would be trainwrecks across the diamond. I was responding to your point that he wasn't really bad at everything (sorry, should've quoted your post directly). It's my opinion that, yes, he was really really bad at everything aside from being fast & athletic. I don't think it's being overstated. Now will that matter at 1B? Maybe not, but his glovework/hands were never good at 3B, & that will be a relevant part of defending at the opposite corner spot. I'm glad the club's considering trying him there, as maybe it can help keep him on the field a bit more. Plus there's not exactly anyone in the org. just screaming 'I should be the first-choice at 1B!'
  23. Braun was awful at every aspect of infield defense at 3B short of being fast & athletic. Nothing looked natural to him... bad instincts, bad hands, horrifically inconsistent (but strong) arm. He might well adapt fine to 1B, but yes he was awful at basically everything.
  24. Thanks for getting this posted, Invader. My availability due to work lately has been less, & admittedly my passion & interest level has waned.
