  1. I think I've had that as my sig for over a good year now, always cracks me up. Do not question. Just smile and nod. I question if Coffey, McClung and Stetter are as good as their small sample size would suggest so far this year. Me too. I think since we've watched McClung pitch for a while now, we know roughly what to expect. With Coffey, I guess I'm just waiting to see him return to his career rates. Of course I hope he's just figured something out/turned the corner. I think Stetter is legit as far as talent goes.
  2. Ugh. "Irritation in his left knee" (BA on the broadcast tonight) is NOT what you want to hear about a 36-y-o like Cameron. Hoping for the best with both Cam & Braun...
  3. For example, a player would not be worth as much if you knew going into the year they were going to miss the last 1/4 of the year and they couldn't pitch in the playoffs The monetary values are based on performance. What a guy actually pitched. Not what he might have been worth if it was a full season. You said you knew how this worked.
  4. Honestly Briggs, give it up on Sheets. The guy was huge for us in 2008, and was the main reason the team was in it in the other seasons you're picking & choosing two week or one week windows to crucify the guy for.
  5. I can't help myself... I know this will wind up as my sig at some point
  6. But your statement that it's not worth it is just completely arbitrary. Guys get overpaid & underpaid... it happens. FanGraphs' salary/value estimates are very well calculated.
  7. And fangraphs calculates value by determining how many runs better than a AAA replacement pitcher he was. Just for the record, FanGraphs seems to be really, really good at estimating contract value. They pretty clearly have player prices figured out almost to a 't'
  8. I think Yost would have called Phillips a gamer. No specific quotes to back this up, but I always got the impression that Yost was a fan of Phillips's game. Did he have the bandage on the beginning of the game? To be honest, I didn't notice it (probably missed it) until Dusty said something. If he did have it on the beginning of the game, that's pretty bad. Honestly I don't know... I can just never pass up a good opportunity to take a jab at Dusty http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Ha --- he can rake too! That's an intriguing player... don't think I've run into his name before around the BF.net discussions, though.
  10. I'm not much of a TV guy, but I have to admit that I'm excited for Conan's debut on Monday night, if only because I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan and the rumor is that they'll be debuting two new songs tomorrow night as Conan's musical guest. If that's true, wow. I'm not even much more than a very casual PJ fan, and I'm already 'there' for that show. That's awesome.
  11. So this has to be a trick question, right?
  12. You mean the same razor-sharp manager that waited until halfway into Gallardo's outing to have the umpire force him to lose the bandage on his elbow? A lot of managers would have recognized that & acted on it right away. But Dusty knows it's like striped bass fishing. You have to cloak your actions. Gallardo never saw it coming!
  13. I hope trwi's right, but I have a sinking feeling it'll be Kendall for another 1-yr. deal. And as far as his work with the staff, you have to consider how much dead weight he is at the plate. Right now there's just no way his assumed defensive value outweighs his almost complete lack of hitting talent.
  14. Just out of curiosity, what makes you think a mid-20s aged SS wouldn't be part of BOS's long-term plans?
  15. Name the last switch-hitter in each league to win the MVP Award NL... Jimmy Rollins AL... Frank Robinson?
  16. I know it's a popular notion around here is that 2 years of AAA will "fix" Escobar's bat I'm not sure why you think there has to be such an adversarial tone to the Escobar conversation. I think what people want to wait for is the power that comes as a player gets older, not that there's some magical 'fix' in AAA. And judging from how he's handling Gamel, there is absolutely no guarantee that if Alcides was up, Macha would play him. And of course the other obvious point that's been made many times is that there's just no rush to move Escobar up with Hardy already at short.
  17. Yes, definitely get hockey tickets. Witte was my dorm, and the location really is awesome. Hope it's a good fit for you T BONE.
  18. Oh that caption has to be an 'Oof!' moment for McNutt... has his name right in the post title. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Is Butler someone that Brewers fans should expect to see come September? I will follow that question up with the acknowledgment that it's probably hard to pin down an answer for it...
  19. In other words you think people should evaluate Gillespie's projectability based exclusively on his stats this season?
  20. Unfortunately that is what Mach likes to do. He really seems to like the match-up thing a lot. Yes, he really does. And for as much as I like his handling of the pitching staff & drastically prefer his persona to Yost's, I really am struggling to think that I could give out much better than a C or C- grade to Macha so far. The way he's handling the Gamel situation to this point just borders on prospect abuse imho. It's not just that he's not playing Mat 'everyday'... it's that Gamel is getting stuck on the bench on matchups that appear to be no-brainers for him to play. As for Corey, it was so good to see him get a great game under his belt. I can only hope this is the beginning of the end of his funk. Go get 'em, Corey!
  21. Well his DL-ing certainly seems very significant, and unfortunately for Joey, quite similar. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
  22. Is middling in AAA really 'knocking on the door'? I guess if you feel that timeframe would be flexible enough to extend into 2010, then yes. I think Escobar is going to take all of this season & perhaps some of early '10 to get his bat ready... and imo that's fine. He's still pretty young, and as gifted as he is defensively & on the basepaths, it seems it's worthwhile to wait for his bat. And to say that people "piss on Escobar" seems a bit extreme.
  23. not sure if it's just a lack of experience and/or confidence, but one stat that jumps out at me is how he is matching up against lefties this year. They are hitting .333 against him and he's given up 10 walks to lefties (2.29 WHIP)....... that's just unacceptable for a LHP But if you look at what might reasonably be expected going forward, does that kind of production from a pitcher that had as much success as Manny did in the minors seem like a good guesstimate? I see that kind of production and think that, barring injury, Parra will greatly improve. It just doesn't add up that a guy who really was able to dominate in the minors would hit the bigs & suddenly not only forget how to keep his BBs down, but also forget how to get same-sided hitters out. For as much Parra defending as I feel drawn to do, and as much Peavy-critiquing as I've done, as long as the package to SD wasn't much more than just Parra straight-up, I really could get on-board with it. I agree with those who have commented on the Pads' need to move Peavy, and that every day he stays put really sees his trade value drop. The only part that still scares me is the possibility that the trading team would have to agree to pick up his final year's option. That's a lot of money.
  24. Is there really much significance to the move back, though? I honestly read that and think, 'Good.' They worked him at 2B, and it's no longer a foreign position to him. Unless there's something (horrific) that I missed, it seems like mission accomplished, and now Alcides can go back to being an insanely gifted SS & work on developing his bat. I guess I just never felt the move to 2B was anything but temporary & to give Alcides & the Brewers more flexibility. If you isolate Counsel's stats the last few years to the times when he was getting regular stats, he a much better hitter. While I realize that nobody thought that what I had to say about Counsell was particularly incendiary or offensive, I just thought I should respond to (at worst) be polite. First & foremost I want to say that I really am a fan of Counsell. I think what he contributes to this team should not be overlooked or marginalized in the slightest. In addition, by all accounts he's one awesome dude. But like endaround said, it's been a long time since Craig has been able to hit much better than his recent projections. I think his OBP/BB skills are much more polished than nearly every hitter on the 25-man, but his lack of power offsets that to a great extent. He's an indispensable reserve player, and the fact that he bats LH just adds to his value. I hope that makes sense... I really do value what Counsell brings for this team.
