  1. Blue font = sarcasm, apirk http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif And is there any update on this rumor? I don't want to badmouth NorthSideSox, but I just don't know why there would be zero news on this from Haudricourt if it were in fact, a done deal.
  2. Leaving defense out of it, I counted 9 NL CF that right now that I'd rather have in my lineup: Ankiel, Reed Johnson, Chris Young, Kemp, Rowand, Beltran, Milledge, McLouth, Spilborgs. Leaving defense out of it? Wow -- just wow. Hey, leaving offense out of it, Tony Gwynn Jr. could start for any team in MLB! Or if we stick with leaving defense out of it, clearly Prince Fielder would be the best CF option in the leauge. what specific benefit does Duffy being left handed have? He's not named 'Cameron', therefore JB doesn't have an unchangeable & inaccurate bias against him.
  3. Bunting imo just should never factor into who leads off, and I don't think you could make a very long list of successful MLB hitters that BB more than K. Bunting is a skill to allow poor hitters (like pitchers) to positively contribute to the offense. If you have a guy that has to bunt quite a bit to not hurt the offense, he should be batting as low in the order as possible. I think Ennder's point that it isn't like this is some philosophical approach by Macha, but instead just some thinking out loud or whatever, shouldn't get lost here. The chances of Ken Macha batting Jason Kendall leadoff under GM Doug Melvin & keeping his managerial job seem pretty slim. Kendall might get a few leadoff ABs here & there (please, not many, please!), but really anyone that knows a bit about baseball can see that Rickie is still the best choice to lead off. I'm of the opinion Weeks would 'fit' better batting lower in the lineup, but honestly there's just no one else to lead off right now.
  4. Minor league defensive stats are just not nearly as reliable as MLB on the whole. Typically scored by the scorekeeper without any replay aid, and I highly doubt there's any play-by-play review ('stringing', iirc)of defense like exists for MLB. Not sure how the other factors you mentioned play into everything, but honestly the lack of reliable analysis of the p-b-p events is enough for me to almost completely discount any minor league defensive stats (meaning that I'd defer completely to scouting reports). Now, with that said, I'm not aware of any other minor league defense stats other than what's provided from the box scores. Could very well be that someone has developed or started to develop something for this, but since not every minor league game is televised (not even close), not sure how that would work.
  5. Weeks gets on base enough he has value... however he probably has more "bad ABs" than he should - hopefully that will get better. I think that's where the comparison with Roberts & Hudson becomes relevant. I agree with your point earlier that the discussion should be about Weeks, and not that, 'Hey, these guys got better... so Rickie will too!' However, I think the notion with examining that trio is that it's not at all unprecedented for guys that appeared to have some trouble establishing themselves (though were still solid) eventually grew into pretty good players.
  6. http://www.mcgwire.com/picarchive-simpson.jpg Do you want to know the terrifying truth, or do you want to see me sock a few dingers?
  7. Ha! Awesome (thanks Casey). Amen.
  8. Yeah, fair enough. I guess I just see improvement with the naked eye, and data to support that, over a couple of seasons. To me that indicates it's much more likely that he will continue that level of performance than suddenly regress for no real reason (other than that he used to be awful). I thought your argument was mostly hand-waving -- which is OK up until you announce it as reality. I stand 100% behind the statement, "[Rickie]'s about average on defense overall", as being reality. I intentionally made the statement as a relative one, since I think a player's exact defensive value can be nearly impossible to pin down.
  9. Ah, A-Rod. Furthering your endless quest to make anyone that liked you change their mind. Also, when were you ordained, Reverend SF?
  10. That's cool news, thanks for sharing logan. I hadn't heard that. New Belgium isn't one of my favorite breweries, but it's certainly a good one & if nothing else having some new beers to try is always a good thing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. This is not "reality", only your hand-waving arguments. One could easily make an objective case that Weeks is well below average. That's true. I think that in any given season, he could wind up being anywhere from 'well below average' to 'above average' in terms of defense. I'd appreciate you not just outright mocking what I have to say on him though. There's nothing 'hand waving' about hard data that supports the impression I get with my eyes. Frankly, I don't find your school of thought any more objective -- I think you want to see Weeks succeed, so you are willing to overstate one year of data to support your conclusion. I certainly hope your school of thought prevails though -- and you may end up being right -- but I think you are at least one season away from realizing it. While I do want to see Weeks succeed, I think my posts on him are pretty fair. As Ennder already pointed out, there is certainly empirical evidence to support the argument that he's about average defensively, but you make a good point. You're certainly right to say, hey hang on a second... we need more data/time here to be sure. This is why I made the comment about being somewhere in between 'below average' & 'above average' in any given season. I think it's only reasonable to refine that by stating more often than not imo Rickie will be close to below average than above average, but I don't agree with your categorization of him defensively anymore.
  12. I'm really not sure why anyone thinks investing in Pedro is a good risk for the Brewers at this point. The guy's in his age-37 season, and really wasn't even close to effective at any point in 2008. He would teach the young pitchers to throw inside, and would mesh with our young Latin pitchers well. What are these statements based upon? Because he has thrown inside in the past? Because he's Latino? Heck, do any young Brewers SP (really only Parra & YoGa) have a big problem throwing inside?
  13. The WBC is worthless I agree with obsessedwithbrewcrew. This comment is way off-base imo. All it takes is watching more than one game of the WBC to see its value. To non-USA teams, this thing is the freaking Olympics of baseball, and is respected as such. While I agree with & understand the concerns about injuries, imo you really can't make a compelling argument that a player would have been safe & avoided any injury if he were just playing in ST.
  14. Weeks is really bad defensively? I'm not a big fan and it wouldn't bother me in the least if they traded him, but that statement doesn't seem correct to me. I'd say he's about average and the real question is whether he lets pressure situations affect him and boot critical balls. Yeah, the 'Weeks is awful defensively' comments really aren't accurate or objective. He's not good, but his range makes up for a lot more than most fans will realize and/or admit. While it's frustrating when he boots easy/easier plays, the fact that he can get to more balls than a lot of 2B helps to mitigate that. Honestly his ability puts him (imo) at anywhere from 'below average' to 'above average' in any given season. I think a lot of fans see frustrating plays & mistakes and then make the broad assumption that, 'Boy, it just couldn't get worse than Rickie at 2B', when the reality is that he's about average on defense overall. Whether he makes us want to pull our hair out on certain occasions shouldn't carry any more weight than when he makes a rangy play that has jaws dropping to the floor. Yes, he hasn't lived up to his perceived potential, not all prospects do, but that doesn't always reflect on the prospect. And this isn't 'new' news, but to anyone that has the super-critical approach that Weeks should be better bc of where he was drafted... just go re-visit that draft class.
  15. Obviously the Astros will now add Jake Peavy out of ST, & Adam Dunn after the deadline, thus securing yet another pennant & WS title. Game, set, match, Ed Wade. (honestly though, not a bad pickup at all for HOU as long as the money's about right)
  16. I think DiFelice is the guy we should be looking at as another starter. Two fantastic seasons in AAA, followed by a strong showing on the big league club last year, and he's just keeping it going this spring (4 shutout innings against Venezuela's stacked lineup, 5 shutout innings with the Crew, 6 K/0 BB). I agree completely on DiFelice. Between him, McClung, Green, and even Cappy as an outside shot, the Brewers have some solid #5-type SP depth this season.
  17. So because the Brewers haven't yet traded away their best young hitter while he's still affordable, management isn't being proactive?
  18. To be fair, here is what Dewan actually wrote: "Everyone realizes that defense is important, but it's never been quantified. Now we have the first way to quantify it. It's not necessarily the best way, and there will be more to come on this issue. The 50% figure is more of an indicator than an exact number, but it just jumped out at me and I wanted to share it with you."
  19. The longer director's cut is almost certainly going to be better. It's not the masterpiece that the comics are, the linear forward movement of a film working against it in many respects, but it's a more than respectable attempt I think that's a fair statement. I have not read any of the original Watchmen material, but agree with the rest of what you said here, Robert. I thought the acting was very good, the roles were cast well, the writing was solid, and some of what Snyder did I liked. However, I feel what I disliked the most about the movie was the direction. I just constantly had the feeling during the movie that there was no real structure to the film (for lack of a better phrase). There was far too much throwaway stuff in there imo... like that joke of a sex scene. I apologize if that's something essential from the graphic novel, but that scene pissed me off. Completely unneccesary & gratuitous. RoCo's 'fight in the alley' is another good example. The credits above are one of the things I absolutely adore about the movie. And illustrates some of it's strengths and weaknesses. Interesting point. I agree with you about that opening sequence. My favorite part of the movie by far. I did love Dr. Manhattan & Veidt, too [/general point] Also, Zack Snyder: slow-motion shots are not as cool as you seem to think they are. Please get over it.
  20. Back to the thread, John Dewan just made an interesting point, saying that he believes he has some statistical proof that defense is worth about half as much as offense. At least from what I've read (in general), 'preventing runs' correlates better with winning than 'scoring runs'. Is it that good offense is harder to find than good defense... and that makes offense inherently more valuable?
  21. wow, bobbledude, nice haul. Those are some great autographs, and sounds like the Hoffman signing was a pretty cool experience. ST rules!
  22. Link Interesting read, but keep in mind this is just valuing fantasy baseball stats/points. Brewers on the list: Fielder (#6 1B) Weeks (#10 2B) Hardy (#7 SS) Braun (#2 OF) Hart (#24 OF) Gallardo (#27 SP) Hoffman (#20 RP)
  23. This year's tournament has been a lot of fun to watch. To me it's the grownup version of the LLWS... seems to have that kind of atmosphere imo.
  24. JJ was the only everyday player not to offensively slump in crunch time last season. Not sure what you mean by this. Fielder sure hit fine for basically the whole season (save a slow start) & some of August. I'd be he's not the only counter-example, either.
  25. Just stumbled across this article at THT by Sean Smith (he of the Chone projections), working in concert with BrewCrewBall's Jeff Sackman TotalZone takes on the minors Escobar rated out at a +22 for 2008, the best SS rating in the minors. I have to admit I'm not very familiar with TotalZone, though I like the work Smith does on the whole.
