  1. And Manny>>>>Dunn. This just isn't true.
  2. Funny you should say that... just saw on ESPN's crawl that the Dodgers plan to pursue Dunn & Orlando Hudson http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Dunn would actually be an upgrade on defense from Manny, and if you take LAD's initial offer of $45M/2 yrs. to Manny, you could probably squeeze at least 3 years out of Dunn on those dollars.
  3. Manny really does nothing but hurt his production by playing LF anymore. Imo he's a DH only at this point. Reportedly the ChiSox offered Abreu 1 yr./$8M, and Burrell got 2/$16M. I think it's pretty clear where the market sits for Manny at this point. Turning down a $25M offer at this point is sheer lunacy.
  4. Oh man... I'm not even going to go edit that brain-fart. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif I just thought, 'Hmmm, who are the toughest LH power hitters in the AL East...' http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
  5. That assumption is problematic, though. There really isn't a reason to assume the organization is "waiting around" -- things just haven't worked out yet, and that can be every bit as much a good thing as a bad thing
  6. There are a couple offers on the table for #4/5 Type starters. We will find out if those offers are taken in the next week. This is great info, if it's true (I assume & hope it is). This has been a odd off-season. Be patient. That should be the site motto. Every offseason.
  7. When Sheets turns into Jason Jennings 2.0, then you won't be so sickened by it. I'm not sure I understand what this means. Jennings was never the pitcher Sheets is.
  8. Nice to get a pick for Brian. Sad to see him go, but depth is never a bad problem. Best of luck to you in Tampa, Brian. Have fun trying to get David Ortiz, J.D. Drew, Nick Markakis, & Carlos Pena out http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. To think that Melvin went into the offseason expecting to lose Sabathia and having no interest in resigning Sheets at any price and having no plans whatsoever to replace either of them is mindboggling. What's mindboggling to me is the intent you project on Melvin each offseason. Are you really going to try & tell everyone that he's just not trying & you somehow know this? Does Melvin actually believe that we can win with this lousy rotation as is with no depth whatsoever and two completely unreliable starters in Suppan and 5 inning McClung? I am in shock that Doug seems to have no urgency whatsoever when it comes to improving this rotation. To be fair, you were in shock by week one of the postseason. What do you want from Melvin? To go out & make a bad signing on someone like Oliver Perez (yes I know he inked with NYM) so you can say, 'At least he did something'? Do you want him to trade away someone & create a hole in another part of the organization? He said all along this offseason that if a 'big' SP were to be added, it would be via trade, not FA. Clearly there hasn't been anything out there so far that he thinks will improve the team. There are still arms available (including Sheets), and I'm guessing that if he's going to invest FA money in a pitcher, Melvin doesn't want to saddle the team with a contract like Perez's. So he's playing the waiting game (just like almost every other GM) on the guys still holding out hope for multi-year deals.
  10. Do I get to let out a "phew!" yet, thinking that this means the Mets aren't going to sign Sheets?
  11. Then why make such a general and vague statement when we are talking about a specific player I wasn't talking about Theriot, FtJ, you were. You made a point about age 30 being a prime-aged season. I thought it was worth mentioning that while it is near the end of a player's prime, baseball players as a whole see a dropoff in production by that age. I think that's a pretty relevant point.
  12. It's not as if all players peak at 27, and decrease and increase equally. Of course not. That's why I said, "baseball players as a group", which you left out. While 30 is right at the edge of being a prime year or not, it's certainly reasonable to expect a bit of decline by that age.
  13. I think the real question is: How likely is it that any team that signs Sheets to a multi-year deal right now ends up regretting it (unless it's exceptionally cheap)? I'd say more than likely. I'd say pretty unlikely. You get an elite talent at well-below recent market value. I mean, take a look at the deal Burnett got & compare it to a hypothetical 3-yr. deal or so to Sheets. The better contract is the one to Sheets, and it's not even close.
  14. Generally players are defined to be in their prime when they are 30. By 30, baseball players as a group have seen their production decline by a small to noticeable amount (from peak at age 26-27). I don't think 30 is really viewed as a prime-aged season anymore, and if it is, it's at or near the end of that spectrum. JJ Hardy is known to miss a few games here and there as well. I'm sorry, but the effort to label Hardy as injury-prone imo is a huge waste of time. Two very, very legit & serious injuries that had nothing to do with any inclination to get hurt easier than anyone else.
  15. They have said Marmol will close and Gregg will be the set up guy. To me this hurts them because Marmol was so valuable in his previous role and I think he loses some value at the new spot. And in addition to not being able to use Marmol in a more flexible & therefore valuable role, the guy that will be assuming said role is not as good a pitcher as Marmol (or Wood). Their bullpen has a chance to be significantly worse than last season.
  16. I think DiFelice will actually be a nice backup SP option, so him being in AAA might not be a bad thing, if it's done so he can be kept on a starter's rest/cycle. But given the choice between Pena & DiFelice as a RP, I'd pick DiFelice as of now.
  17. Jim -- I have no better words in response to your departure & accompanying letter aside from, THANK YOU. Thank you for your devotion to the Brewers and their fans over the years. Thank you for always staying up on the Brewers as an organization, and working that knowledge seamlessly into your broadcasts. Thank you for being the classiest professional a fan could hope for in radio. And thank you for not turning down the opportunity of a lifetime to share your gift with your hometown fans & team. I just hope they know how lucky they are... they'll find out soon enough. As a die-hard, born & bred Brewers fan, I can only imagine how fantastic the opportunity to be their radio voice would be. Enjoy your time in Atlanta, and thank you for all the thankless hours you've put in along the way in your trip to, and now beyond, Milwaukee. And go Brewers!
  18. Well, that or just completely screwing up on Burrell.
  19. I'm not a huge fan on counting guys from division rivals getting hurt, though, so I'm not going to mark them down that much. Me neither, crewcrazy, but it just seems the Cubs have put themselves in a position for some relatively serious injury problems. I really can't wrap my head around why Hendry has made the moves he has so far.
  20. It's weird... I thought Hendry made some good moves last year, but there really isn't anything that he's done so far this year that's made sense to me. Well, aside from adding Bradley, that is.
  21. Melvin insists that Weeks compares favorably with Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who is often held up as an example of the player Weeks should be. "I'm hoping Rickie can become Brian Roberts," he said. "At the age of 25 he's done more than Brian Roberts did at 25, and Brian Roberts is a very good player. Rickie just might be a little bit of a late bloomer. He scares me to death to trade. He could just take off, so we're going to exhaust all our efforts with Rickie." Very glad to hear that from Melvin... not that it wasn't already pretty obvious. 2009 will be a huge season for Rickie, and I will again set myself up for disappointment by hoping for that breakout year. Melvin isn't ready to alter his assessment of Hart's ability based on one horrific month. But he's counting on Hart learning from the experience. "I think if you look at every player you will find that they have a month or six weeks when they completely fizzle," Melvin said. "It just so happened his was in September. I see him learning from that. That's the maturity part of it."... I sure hope the focus on just "one month" is from the author Punzel, & not Melvin. While he still had the power numbers, Hart's on-base ability was poor in June, July, August, & September.
  22. Abreu's fielding is just terrible. The joke among Yankees fans the past couple years is that he's afraid of the wall. Endaround's point here cannot be stressed enough. He is an absolute joke in the field at this point. I agree with joepepsi in that if we had a DH spot, he might somehow fit in on a 1-yr. deal. But then we'd just have Overbay at 1B & Prince at DH, so... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. Heilman's solid, but was he really worth even further depleting the MIF depth? I'm not high on Cedeno, but now as best I can tell, the Cubs' MIF situation is Theriot/Fontenot/Miles. That could get ugly.
  24. I still hold out hope we can keep him. I apologize in advance if this has been posted. I just got sent a copy from an article in the Appleton Post-Crescent on Jan. 21st on the 44th annual Red Smith Sports Award Banquet. Melvin was there to receive the 'Nice Guy Award'. Writer Brett Christopherson posed the following question to Doug in an interview: Q: Is there any chance Ben Sheets will return to the Brewers? A: It's still open. I'm just not that confident it will happen. I've talked to Ben at length. I've talked to his agent. I just don't see it happening. I tried to find a link to the article in the Post-Crescent online archives, but no luck. If anyone feels I'm just making this up, I'm sure there's at least one other BF.net member that saw the article.
  25. Never been down there for any reason before, and looking forward to the warm weather as well. Thirded, blancofan. Have a blast! And make sure to check out as many other ST parks as you can reasonably fit in. Just great atmospheres basically anywhere you go. Another tip if you hadn't thought/heard of it... Desert Botanical Gardens. Amazing. And of course, they just happen to be featuring an exhibit by UW-Madison artist Dale Chihuly... many probably know him from the glass sculptures in the Kohl Center just through the main gate. http://www.chihuly.com/installations/public/Art/Almost3_Img0075M.jpg Chihuly: The Nature of Glass exhibit at Desert Botanical Gardens
