Comcast out here in Portland is advertising the $169 rate through 4/12, I think. I'll have to check if that's the case, or if it expired today as well.

In the case of Peavy, the main piece is money. Peavys salary is a whopping 30% of the Padres pay roll, so if The Cubs are willing to take on the remainder of that contract, and pitch them a few decent young players in the process, the Pads can then go out and rebuild during the offseason. I dunno, for the Pads it's not like keeping Peavy around until they got a good return is a bad idea. He's reason alone for fans to come out to PetCo Park, and it's not like he's going to get old between now & the trade deadline. I really don't see how CHN could be a legit player for him at this point without sending Vitters as the main piece to SD (which, ok, they could do).

I agree with Ennder. I would be surprised if they didn't pair for 25 assuming 'full' seasons from both guys. While I'm certainly looking forward to the return of Gallardo (probably my favorite Brewers player), I'm really excited about Parra this season. I think he's really going to take a nice step forward & show why people talked about him as a potential ace when he was coming up through the system. Sometimes I think we forget a tad just how special the assembled talent is in Milwaukee, just since they're 'our guys' & we're used to watching & talking about them. How many franchises out there have a 1-2 punch of young pitching talent like the Crew? While you can name off teams like SF & CIN, there really aren't very many other squads. With Braun, Gallardo, & Parra, this team has a really talented core heading into the future.

Bobbles McRange Rickie Weeks's new nickname? I don't see any reason to think that Freddie had more value to his team than Bobbles in the above scenario. That's a great way of looking at it. Imo a large factor here is something I'll call 'fan-expected out conversion rate'. When a player flubs a play someone like Hardy would rarely boot, the perception is far more negative (imo) than it is positive when a player like Weeks converts an out -- for example's sake, let's just say he's able to do so without diving & the appearance of intense physical effort/ability -- that would have gotten past a more surehanded fielder like, say, Ray Durham. I know that last statement's a bit convoluted, so I hope it makes sense. The gist of it is that it seems fans assign a stronger negative value to a misplay on a supposedly easy play than they do positive value on a borderline kind of play, that many MLB fielders at the position would not be able to convert.

Gang, I'm going to respond to your points and then let it go since I seem to be pushing this discussion in a negative and non-productive direction. I apologize if I appear smug in my postings. I don't believe stats such as UZR can capture much of what happens in a game. Granted my example was subjective but I was sitting with my son directly in behind home plate and thought with a dive he could have potentially gotten a glove on it. The paid employees charting pitches behind me thought the same thing and they likely see many more games than we ever will. Another example is Rickie Weeks issues with turning the DP last year. It's an area that stats don't generally capture. I know what you mean. But for Hall there's a lot of data that backs up that he's a solid fielder, and for the most part when you watch him you can see why. Both he & Weeks seem to be cut from the cloth of 'gets to a lot of balls, but isn't a natural fielder', as opposed to someone like Branyan who looks to excercise good fundamentals but doesn't have the range. Also, I think it's totally fair to criticize a player if effort is in question, and the example you provided of Hall just happened to be in a ST game. We could probably come up with some 'real game' examples if we thought long enough on Hall. It is kind of odd to see, though, when a guy just isn't as bad an option as he may appear. Fittingly, this discussion is in a Cameron thread, since many people this offseason have felt that Cam is a guy we could 'do better than', but then when compared across the league you see it's actually kinda tough to improve on Mike. Even with his technical shortcomings, Hall appears able to play at least at a competent level defensively.

I'm sure not one of them, either. I may have to give the Berghoff beers another try. My wife and I thought they were watered down versions of good beer last time we tried some. Much like many of Lienenkugel's beer. I used to feel that way, but I don't know if Berghoff has changed their brews or if I just was completely ignorant. They make a lot of good stuff. Really, accross the board they're pretty impressive as a brewery imo.

The other 90% didn't LEAD the league in errors. I'm talking ALL players and not just 3B. Again, I'll let Billy's play speak for me. Catch you back in a couple months or so. E is just about the worst way to evaluate defenders. All that tells you is that Hall got to a lot more balls than many of his peers. Honestly, the smug way you just say all this wouldn't bother me if the facts weren't lined up against you on this one. One final item which I think illustrates my point. The stat guru's on this board love to point out how Hall's range offset's his errors. I went to the game last Friday night. Hall's playing 3B. Texas has a runner on 2b with one out. The hitter hits a hard two hopper about 2 feet inside the 3B line. Hall made no effort to get to the ball. A) It's ST B) It's one play

2) Put the ball-and-glove logo as a shoulder patch on the home and road jerseys. The logo should have the modern colors I really agree, and have wished they'd do some form of modernization of the ball & glove logo for years

Except that you only haven't been eating crow because of the point JBriggs makes If everyone spent all year watching 90% of the 3rd basemen, they'd realize that Hall's more than adequate defensively. I also really like how logan says it: I would love to go on and on about how bad I think Hall is, but it just isn't true. Heck, last offseason I thought that we were gong from historically bad defense in Braun to bad defense in Hall. I was wrong.

I'd rather see the alternate cap use the old cartoon bird logo. Oh me too. Would look as good as (imo) if not better than the BoSox's stockings alternate.

The only problem I have with platooning Gamel is that it would waste a large part of one of his valuable, salary-controlled seasons. Imo it's a far better use of Gamel to let him play as much 3B as possible in the hopes that he can stick there. Otherwise, just bring him into the fold in the OF if Hart or Cameron is dealt this season.

I don't like Hall. I think of a matador whenever I see him field. Always off to the side. Annoys me to no end. Stats seem to back up that he is a good 3B though This is the problem when people come back with, 'Well I don't need facts to tell me I'm wrong! Hall sucks!' He's not a great fielder at 3B, but that people keep pushing that he's bad is just literally indefensible.
