  1. I still think given this market that this is way overpaying. Per cwolf's post #3, Fangraphs had him estimated at roughly half the value of this deal in 2008. It's reasonable to think he'll be close to that value in '09, and then it won't take much more than average play to earn the rest of the value of the contract.
  2. Can you say Suppan. That's not even close to being fair to Roberts. Suppan was average when we signed him... Roberts has been very good. Like others have mentioned, he may not be worth $10M in the 4th year of the deal. However, aside from the fact that we don't know how the contract is structured, he'll probably be worth the deal on the whole.
  3. I thought of how this pertains to Manny Ramirez as well, but I can't imagine a $4M-ish contract is going to stand in the way of any potential deal with Manny.
  4. Funny that mletto posted that data... I was just headed here to post 87-75. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. It's easy to see [brewer's] potential, but Joshua thinks he'll be a stud and that this is the season he'll start putting it all together. I can't remember specific posters, and I know it was more than just one, but I know there have been some very loyal Brewer backers on the forum. I hope we get to see why they (& others) are so confident. Do I remember correctly that Brewer may have to move to the OF in the future?
  6. Past success and the fact that both Julio and Coffey are at the age where their skills should not be falling off tell me that at least one stands a good chance of being a solid contributor this year. I agree that there's a decent chance one will pitch well. I don't personally get into the 'limelight' or mystique of the closer role -- I just don't think either dude is all that special. Once in a while you'll see a fluke, but for the most part, career minor leaguers are minor leaguers for a reason. I think that as long as DiFelice is used properly (read: face as many RHB as possible), he will thrive. As an emergency or near-emergency SP option, I also think he has value. His K/BB ratio was downright nasty at AAA last season, and he didn't really get the chance to pitch too many MLB innings.
  7. Even if he doesn't imo he still carries a lot of value. His defense is stellar (even though his CS% will most certainly drop in '09), and the average offensive line for catchers in 2008 was just .255/.328/.387/.715. I don't think it will be hard for the Crew to be above-average at C with both Kendall ('08: .246/.327/.324/.651) & Rivera.
  8. What would bother me is if he gets a spot out of spring training at the expense of a solid MLB relief arm like Gagne, Julio, Coffey, McClung or Riske, all of whom have MLB closing experience, or a potential future contributor like Morlan or Dillard, who may have closer-type stuff. Yeah, I especially agree on Dillard & Morlan getting shots at the 'pen ahead of Mark. The other guys who I'd want to see DiFelice ahead of in the other group are probably Julio & Coffey... Gagne if he's struggling. I'm just not very enamored of Julio & Coffey. The former I think is probably not going to be a good RP for us, and the latter I think benefitted from performing well over a small sample last season -- the ultimate tease when it comes to a RP arm.
  9. So pretty much everyone on this forum wants to give up on him for 3 WEEKS. While I understand there's some hyperbole being employed here, the biggest stretch imo is claiming it was just 3 weeks. Hart struggled for much of the 2008 season in terms of not making outs. .310 OBP or worse for 4 of the 6 months of the season.
  10. But how many of those MLB squads are or will be contenders for a playoff spot? Yes, someone like D"I"Felice may be useful to a non-playoff contender as a regular, or perhaps as a short-term injury fill-in, but for a team with solid rotational and bullpen depth, he's simply an extra with a non-speaking line and 2 seconds of face time. My point is only that he would be starting for some MLB teams. That's no easy feat. Basically what I am saying is if the Brewers are in the position to depend on DiFelice as a valuable member of the team this year, things will not have gone according to plan. Given the history of this team, that is entirely possible. Agreed -- but with pitching, things rarely go according to plan. I don't agree at all that Capuano & Green are ahead of DiFelice at this point, and am not sure about Wright. But again, my only point is that DiFelice is a very solid depth option.
  11. PNC Park is a LH hitter's dream in terms of dimensions, so the argument about his park doesn't hold up well imo. He put up better numbers at home in 2008, & has done so his whole career. Did he deserve a gold glove or the contract? I believe he is a good fielder I think he deserved the contract, but I think you're wrong on his fielding. McLouth just isn't as talented a player as Braun, and I don't agree that the 'sky's the limit' for Nate. Not trying to say McLouth isn't a good player, though. That LH bat clearly can do some damage. But if you take him out of CF (as they should, defensively), his bat doesn't have the same value at a corner OF spot. Braun's on the other hand, still holds up well.
  12. Crewin06... your mission to piss everyone off seems to be succeeding so far. You could probably stop telling people they're making things up.
  13. DiFelice is a very solid depth option, both 'pen & rotation. He'd be a part of many MLB squads' starting rotation.
  14. True, but I'd rather have him start against a divisional rival (esp. CHN) than the Giants. And I just want to say how encouraging I find our pitching situation heading into the season. We seem to have strong talent in the rotation & bullpen, and we appear to have depth both places, too. Well done this offseason, Mr. Melvin. To be sure we don't have anyone to replace what Sabathia brought last second-half (& his talent in general), but adding Looper was a very nice move to improve over replacement-level.
  15. Really there isn't another option for Macha aside from Weeks. I hope that Melvin is able to work a deal this season to bring in another strong OBP bat to give Rickie the chance at hitting down around #5 or so.
  16. This isn't the contract you're looking for Thanks as always for your insight, J. Please do wish Luis the best in Seattle.
  17. If I wanted to "save face" or use magical agent talk I had every opportunity to call Haudricourt or McCalvey and say something to them. I definitely need to learn magical agent talk. I feel like the cone of silence must play a role in all this.
  18. It may be the single dumbest move by any manager, ever. http://razzball.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/dusty.jpg Patterson! Get out there -- you're (still) leading off!
  19. Juan Pierre didn't benefit as much from Coors field as someone with some power like Dante Bichette did. Actually one of the biggest ways in which Coors skews towards offense is the higher # of singles it allows. They made the OF larger to combat the thin air & how far batted balls can fly, which in turn creates more space for singles & bloopers to fall in... not to mention the gap-shots. Now, this is just my knee-jerk response to your post -- I haven't taked the time to investigate Pierre & Bichette, or any other specific batters.
  20. I had E.I. for the first time last season, living in the Pac. NW. It is awesome, nodakfan. Get it. The only think I can think of is that you get game broadcasts only... so no pregame or postgame stuff. But if, say, an interview is done on-field or in the dugout prior to the broadcast switching to its postgame stuff, then you get to watch that. Iirc $199 is the going rate. It's worth every penny. Also- do most cable providers offer half season rates? I don't believe so, no. Hopefully I'm wrong on this.
  21. I know I am unpopular for coming to this post (because this part of the site is the baseball trekkie convention portion of the show) No, you're unpopular for snarky crud like that. Scouting takes up the lions share…I am sure some stats are thrown around…but not as much as someone seeing something. Yeah, I mean, we didn't need projections to know that Fielder would hit 50 HR again, right? We seen it with our own eyes, so he clearly is a 50-HR hitter! I mean, you can continue to live in a dream world where statistical work hasn't become roughly 50% of the game's analysis, but I just don't know why you'd pretend that's not the case. Nobody is pretending that the projection is gospel (or they shouldn't be, at least). It's just a "best guess" - which is why I think it's weird that so many people get bent out of shape about them. Agreed, KegStand. I think the reason this non-argument gets thrown around because otherwise it would sound exceedingly silly to harp on people using an objective analysis of both stats & scouting.
  22. My dad lives in Appleton, and I've been doing my best to get him super-excited about watching Lawrie this summer. Mentioned to go to games early, since you never know how soon he might get that call to Brevard County. Thanks for sharing that info, brewerguy.
  23. Maybe David Eckstein's intangibles help save bullpens & kittens
  24. So Billy will miss a chunk of ST if not all... is that really that big of a deal for a veteran? Safe to assume that this tear should rehab just fine?
  25. If no one offers him a major league deal after that, he may well come back to the Brewers as our bullpen situation probably suggests he could get called up fairly quickly from AAA. If he could get called up so (relatively) easily, wouldn't that make it pretty likely that he gets claimed? I wonder if Morlan's presence, and requirement to be on the 25-man (since he was a Rule 5 pick), is what made Luis expendable?
