  1. Was it just someone trying to scoop the deal that got ahead of themselves? Wasn't Bay to TB the main rumor recently? Sounds like a classic case of getting the personnel or where they're headed mixed up in a trade rumor.
  2. Yost has managed as bad as he ever has the last 5 games. And not just because they lost all 5. Leaving in starters too long, blowing thru your bullpen when the game is pretty much over, and bad lineups. I've defended him this year for the most part, but he's been horrible the last few days. Know how much Ned Yost cares about making the correct moves to put his team in the best position to win? So much that he starts Craig _____ Counsell at 3B today over Russell Branyan. Fire Yost now.
  3. That's kinda true. It seems like whenever Hall has been a day-to-day starter this team has stunk on offense. Maybe it's time to get Branyon back in there? I know this isn't the lineup thread, so I won't type a full one, but I've been waiting to see how long it will take Yost to go Fielder-Braun-Branyan against RHP 3-4-5. I know it'd probably have a minimal impact, but at this point we need all the help we can get.
  4. Right, but you don't manage knowing the outcome, only how you, the manager can affect the outcome in the here & now. What you're doing is applying hindsight, when the complaints were/are about the decision & how it affected the game in real-time. And I agree, it does indeed show that even a blantantly wrong call might not matter.
  5. Failure starts at the top and that's me and we will improve on this. I won't let my players down again." Wow, if this fell from the lips of Ned Yost... not sure what I'd do. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I don't know how anyone couldn't respect someone saying something like that. And who knows, maybe he does to his players when the clubhouse door is closed. Maybe he just puts on a mask for the media. I sure hope so. Me too, and this is certainly a very plausible scenario. Who knows, though. Calling the hit and run was a bad move, but it didn't make much difference except for the mythical momentum factor. Or the not-so-mythical 'scoring runs' factor.
  6. That is a good idea. I have friends that have full season tickets that sold theirs for this series and it's hard to blame them on one hand, while I'm disgusted on the other. They got a lot over face value for each and paid for their entire season ticket package because of it. So it's hard top blame them when the money is that good for 4 games in July. If someone can afford full season tickets, I fail to understand how making double or triple the tickets' face value is really important. Then again, this is someone that can't afford full season tickets. Sell to a Brewers fan, fine. Sell to a Cubs fan? Ugh. Yes, I know, 'It's their ticket to do with as they please...' EDIT (for clarity): If you can afford season tickets, but an extra $100-200 bucks to sell your seat to a rival fan is worth more than the game experience itself, I wonder how much you actually care about the Brewers. Yes, there are extenuating circumstances like not being able to make the game, but in general I wonder about that kind of move. I suppose there are season-ticket holders that budget them into a tight budget where an extra $100 bucks might mean a lot... I just don't think there are 15,000 or so of these cases.
  7. I'd love to see somebody try to defend Ned putting on a hit and run with the catcher running and pitcher batting. But if it'd worked out, it would've been the right call! Take that! Leaders do not admit mistakes if they wish to continue to be leaders. They must admit it to themselves, be their own worst critic, but I sincerely think admitting your shortcomings means you do not have the same authority to make those who follow you do so to the best of their abilities. They now start to question you and not execute as well as they should because now your own self doubt becomes theirs. Good thing Yost hasn't admitted any mistakes -- the team might be playing like crap right now if he did! Buc, I couldn't disagree more with you. True leadership is absolutely about accountability. If admitting a mistake means your team instantly turns on everything you have to say, I'm guessing one mistake didn't cause that alone. Part of what I'm starting to fear as an effect of Yost's inability to admit his mistakes is that it's trickled down to the players. Take the comments from Hall about 'MAYBE it's time for us to adjust' -- the time to adjust has been here for about a week now, and it appears adjusting is just first being considered now. Leadership... where is it?
  8. "Maybe we need to make some adjustments." MAYBE?! I hate Ned Yost's decision making process of late. Moronic. What I hate more is seemingly every hitter except for Fielder folding like a greeting card lately. Embarassing. "Maybe we need to start 'sitting' on some with runners in scoring position because they are not giving us a lot of fastballs You see, Bill, there's this thing called strike zone discipline. I don't expect you to know much about it, since you show us time & time again that yours is just about the worst if not the worst on the team. You, Braun, Hart, Hardy -- all these RHB have been scouted that you sit on fastballs & don't have the discipline to lay off breaking pitches outside the zone. As TH said, it's 'Big Boy' time, and time to stop acting like the pitchers are supposed to make your job easy for you. Get a clue. Oh, and Yost... stop playing guys on incorrect matchups. God knows Branyan's bat & discipline would help right now.
  9. Ned Yost... starting Hall against another RHP. Ned, proving time & time again, that he just doesn't fully 'get it'
  10. Yes, but it's not crazy... interesting
  11. very strange trade for the Tigers, they are only 5.5 back and considering how bad they played in april, you would think they would be adding instead of subtracting. Their catcher position is very suspect now. I know Inge has been doing some of the catching for the Tigers... even though he reportedly told the team he doesn't want to catch anymore. It's where he has the best shot of sustaining full-time PT, and honestly at this point in Pudge's career, Inge is roughly a lateral move. Good add for the Yankees. Molina had been playing better than I'd hoped he would offensively, but adding Pudge is a solid move. It's very much unclear whether or not Posada will ever be able to offer much value defensively anymore (he needs surgery on his shoulder, but wants to wait until after the season iirc), so having Pudge around as an option for next year certainly couldn't hurt. EDIT: Guess not on Molina (58 OPS+)... been a while since I checked the Yanks' stats
  12. [insert 'Yeah, but he'd injure his ____' joke here]
  13. Hey pink is to symbolize a deep passion for breast cancer research, not just some tacky fashion thing! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. Whoops. Well, thanks sarge & Casey. The voting system elects players that aren't the best fielders at each position, which is the intent. I often strongly dislike the managers/coaches/players voting system's decisions. I dislike sportswriter-voting systems' & their decisions. And apparently I dislike accuracy... so by the transitive property I guess I should love the GG voting system.
  15. i've learned that the biggest key to finding a girl is to be genuinely happy with your life without one. girls have this "he's desperate" radar that they run from, but the man who doesn't absolutely need a girl is human catnip. Great point(s) -- 100% true. The 'be genuinely happy w/out one' part is critical though. The 'human catnip' part doesn't come or work as well if it's a forced 'I'm too cool to need a chick'. That's more like human [whatever cats dislike... water?] as best I can tell. coupled people force their single friends into being the third wheel all the time. This is something that weighs on me, not being single. There are very few friends of mine that I feel cool with asking to hang out with me and the crazy... er, lady. I know how much it can suck to be that third wheel unless you genuinely are friends with each individual, not just 50% of the couple.
  16. Ramirez did it when he laser-beamed the LF wall last night. Iirc it was already 7-0 at that point.
  17. Pretty dang cool. I'd love to meet his mom some day; she's clearly done a helluva job raising her young man. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. Well-said GB12. GG's are intended to recognize the best fielder, but the voting system sucks, just like the other main awards. Sportswriters just aren't the best way to filter player info anymore... in fact, I think it's a joke that they're still asked to in this manner. Imo the awards votes should consist of both human & cpu/stat components. Something along the lines of the way the BCS is calculated, but without the stupid politics.
  19. I'm sorry to do this, but I have no idea where to look: Can anyone post the wins or win shares this move is expected to add for LAA? Teixeira is a big acquisition, but I think the overall/net impact of the move for this season might surprise some people. Is the move 'worth' 2 wins the rest of the way?
  20. I think I just caught an Othello reference in The Office's episode "Traveling Salesmen"... This episode starts off with Angela forgetting to mail in the company's tax forms to the corporate office, and Dwight secretly driving the forms to NYC to cover for her. Andy pairs himself with Michael for a traveling sales call, and spends the bulk of the travel time badmouthing Dwight. After failing to get Michael to turn on Dwight, when they return to Scranton, Andy rummages through Dwight's desk to find his car keys. He then goes into his car & finds the tollbooth receipt from Dwight's AM trip to NYC, and brings it to Michael's attention. Andy suggestively asks, 'He wasn't going to see Jan, was he?' And then asks, 'Where have I heard a story of laundry & betrayal?' The laundry reference is Andy seeing Michael tossing his laundry to Dwight to get done (in punishment for trying to sneak around Michael & get his job by going to Jan in an earlier episode)... but the whole conniving act started to make me think of Othello, in which of course a piece of laundry (the handkerchief) ignites Othello's jealous rage. Andy certainly fits the bill of Iago in this episode. I'd like to know if anyone else sees this, or if I'm just reaching http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. My vent is that I just found out from the vent thread that the season is *officially* over. I would've appreciated getting that memo.
  22. The Angels didn't need to do anything to have a rotation or a bullpen that's far superior to the Brewers. Here's their pitching stats sorted by ERA. That's not what I was talking about. I was just comparing Teixiera-Vlad with Sabathia-Sheets... just for fun. Thanks for the info on Marek. I figured his stuff had to be pretty special. If the Braves had truly put Texeira out there, I am shocked that a team would not have bettered the offer. If this is the deal, then I'd have to agree. But then again, unless a team traded for Mark as a rental, some of the 'usual suspects' weren't really on the market as of today. Here are some teams that could have taken Teix. as an 'over the top' piece: --NYY: Posada & Damon both have to DH at this point in the season. Posada might just shut it down altogether. Giambi has had to play 1B all season so the other guys can get ABs at DH. --BOS: Youkilis at 1B, Lowell at 3B (where Youk could have moved for Teixeira & where Chipper plays in ATL), Ortiz at DH --NYM: Stuck with Delgado at 1B... would have had to find a taker for him & his salary before getting Teixeira, in all likelihood --LAD: Have Loney at 1B, who's already giving them solid production. Perhaps the Dodgers were in play but didn't want to lose a top P prospect to better the Angels' offer? --ARZ: Conor Jackson at 1B, and you have to wonder if their farm system had enough ammo to land Teixeira anyway. Besides, not a given that they would want to sink so much cash into Teix. when they have plenty of young players that are going to get more pricey. --TB Carlos Pena; limited payroll, might not have wanted to deal prospects for a rental --CHW They've got Swisher playing some 1B, Thome in the mix, but I'm not familiar enough with their farm system. --MIN Probably not worth giving up talented youngsters for < 1/2 season of Teix., besides they have Morneau at 1B already --CHC Derrek Lee, obv. --STL Pujols, obv. I guess it's kinda funny... once you handicap the situation a bit, there really just weren't that many viable places for Teix. to go at this point. MIN probably would make the most sense in a 1-season sense, but they certainly couldn't retain him, and would basically have to dump their recently-acquired LF Delmon Young to the bench (or send him to ATL) to make room for Teix./Morneau at DH, because Kubel's been DHing this season & has been much better than Young at the plate. CHW would have made some sense as long as the OF of Quentin/Swisher/Dye wouldn't hurt them on D. Looking at it now, the Angels stand out as the team both best prepared to fit Teix. into their lineup right now & also sign him to an extension long-term. If the Halos can extend him, the trade looks exceedingly good imo.
  23. I'm pretty sure razzzor was kidding. I can't see him stating that seriously.
  24. My thoughts too, sheethead. Huge pickup for LAA. A good use of resources in dealing Kotchman (a fine player) & a minor-league arm for a stud bat like Teixeira. His swing v. RHP is going to work nicely with that short(er) RF in Anaheim. They finally got that other big bat to pair with Vlad. Imho this is to offense what pairing CC & Sheets was to pitching. The fun part is that, not only do we have the pitching duo, but that our duo is likely a better combo in terms of talent regardless. Teixeira fits the needs of that team in general, and just happened to play Kotchman's spot. My guess is the Braves got a solid arm in Marek, too. I'd appreciate any info others can share on the pitcher.
  25. The point is that they had tangible impact on performance on the field, and weren't made-up fairytale wussy stories. An excuse is, 'I didn't feel like it/I didn't want to'. A reason is, 'My performance was hurt/affected by my injury'
