  1. And, it is not derived from a Shakespeare play, but the film Shotgun Stories is downright Shakespearean... I recommend it highly... although the ending suffers a bit... I'll have to check that out, RKFG. Also, I edited in Much Ado About Nothing for My Own Private Idaho... thanks for the subtle hint http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think a lot of people would like McKellan's Richard III. It's modern setting clarifies themes instead of being distracting. Oh, I wholeheartedly agree. I watched it a few months ago for the first time. I'd gone to the video store for a 'refresher' viewing of (Branagh's) Henry V, which was rented out. So I 'settled' for Richard III. Very good. At first, the modern-to-antiquated movement is a bit off-putting, but as Robert said... it works.
  2. Congratulations to your cousin Todd! He was solid last night, and certainly better than some of the 'tenured' umpires we've seen this season. What a huge night for him! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The Cards catcher was yelling a few things at Braun after he hit it. Something like "Get the 'f-bomb' going you SOB". I forget what Todd said exactly. Sounds like he felt a bit differently about what Braun did compared to what Hall did. Getting the smack-down for the fourth game in a row might have colored the perception there a bit, though. Did you notice where Todd was standing when Braun touched home plate? No -- I didn't. Maybe that was because I was jumping up & down, running around my apartment hooting & hollering. Where was he standing?
  3. Thanks RKFG, and homer -- yep, you took the words right outta my mouth. Push off, ya hoser.
  4. Agreed. Unfortunately, Ned is using a pitifully small amount of ABs to determine that Bill Hall has magically become a better option v. RHP than Branyan. It stinks.
  5. What, you think anything less than 162-0 isn't a wasted season? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I agree on the predictions that have the Cubs-Brewers splitting the series. An extra win would be great, but I won't freak out about an extra loss either. It would be nice to sweep the Astros (Wandy Rodriguez, Brandon Backe, Randy Wolf) to have some insurance, but I don't think one should ever expect a sweep.
  6. The interesting part to me is that it appears to be related to Marmol's frequent use and/or overuse. It's not like people haven't been pointing to this kind of negative impact from said usage from relatively early in the season. Much like last season, where Marmol was practically a different pitcher in the 2nd half.
  7. Just 2 months ago people were saying Hardy stunk and all season I was the minority when I said he had 20+ HR power and last year wasn't just a fluke and now we want to make him the 3B of the future. Opinions change pretty darn fast around here. I was thinking of this, Ennder. It's almost like people base their 'knowledge' on the most recent results. See: Fielder, Prince.
  8. I'm a big Shakespeare lover, and know that not everyone is. If you are, or even if you've just seen the films in question, I'd love to hear your thoughts on them. What did you like? What sucked? What performances/direction/editing? I was (pleasantly) shocked to see Henry V as their #1 choice. I absolutely, fervently love that movie, but had no idea it was so highly regarded. The 'band of brothers' soliloquoy can get me pumped up any time I watch it, and that's just the one scene. I'm a big fan of Branagh's Shakepeare adaptations, though. Directors (films on list): Kenneth Branagh (3 -- lowest rank #11) Franco Zeffirelli (3) Akira Kurosawa (2) Laurence Olivier (2) Orson Welles (2) I understand that this is just one group's ranking, so I expect a bit of disagreement. For example, I thought Oliver Parker's Othello (1995) was far better than #24, or a 68%. Stirring performances by both Branagh & Fishburne, & Irene Jacob is suberp as Desdemona. I feel Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet (1996) is vastly overrated. I understand he went for a modernization of the story, but the delivery of Shakespeare's lines throughout (imho) is embrassingly bad, save one or two performances.

  10. After much thought, I figured this could use its own thread, as opposed to adding it into another of the movie threads. Rottentomatoes.com has put together its list of the 30 Greatest Shakespeare Movies. It's a 'slide show', so here they are, broken up into two posts so it's not insanely hard to read. RT.com score is boldfaced for each film: 1. Henry V (1989) -- Dir. Kenneth Branagh; Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Ian Holm; 100% 2. 11. Congrats, Uncle Jamie! Can't wait for the picture.
  12. Saw the trailer with The Dark Knight. Visually, it looks amazing. But then again, so did 300 I won't rush out to see it, but if it gets even moderately good reviews, I'd be curious to see it.
  13. Another vote for 4-3. 5-2 if I'm feeling frisky
  14. Defensive spectrum C - SS - 2B - CF - 3B - RF - LF - 1B Duh! Sorry, of course #1 is catcher. Thanks logan. I agree that Hardy + Prince on the right side would mean a lot more seeing-eye singles where did someone hear that JJ raced and tied for fastest Brewer? ST 2007 (iirc) -- the team released the times. It's not some wacko crackpot idea. They were 60-yard sprints, iirc
  15. bigredrobbo 11:47a, this thread: "I wonder how much of this non-issue is down to the fact that it's hard to razz on Yost too much" bigredrobbo 12:06p, HR ettiqutte thread: "Again, slow news day, Yost-wise, so we have 11 pages of physics and ethics discussions about the game" Why not check out the Yost threads? There's actually been some great, rational discussions in them lately. These two comments added absolutely nothing imho but baiting. I don't have a problem with the announcers mentioning a no hitter. To me the superstition only applies to the people on the field and in the dugout. This is the way I understand it.
  16. Lou Piniella has no concept of how to properly handle his pitching staff. He overworks & abuses arms, including Harden. Instead of planning out how he wants to use a P beyond the game he's in, he makes awful decisions like making Harden throw too many pitches & leads to arguably their best SP (potentially) missing one of the most important series of the year. If anyone wants to start pointing out that we're fortunate to have Ned (at least in one aspect), now would be a good time to make that case. Then again, it is the Sun Times
  17. Oh, good point -- forgot to mention that Marmol threw 38 pitches last night. 38! And Cra-Z threw 125 to get through 7 innings. Piniella is treating their best arms like garbage. I don't delight in knowing the strain under which he's putting his players & the huge risks he's taking in terms of getting them injured, but I do like knowing that there's just no way the Cubs' pitching staff is going to be fresh (or anywhere close) down the stretch.
  18. I think the fact that a Cardinals fan forum has little to no discussion on this should tell us how 'horrible' what Braun did actually was. Remember Aramis Ramirez's infamous game-winner off CoCo last season? There was no enraged thread here.
  19. The Hardball Times's stats pages are awesome. Completely sortable, and you can filter in so many ways (by position, league, whether players qualify with enough PA, etc.). Don't rely on any one source, but THT is a good one. They also have a glossary that explains their stats in pretty good detail. Plus, if you're still confused, just go post a question in the Statistical Analysis forum here. Honestly, BF.net itself is about as good a resource on stats as you can find.
  20. Good points, bj. Now that you mention it, I do remember young Thome was initially a 3B
  21. I'm sorry, as I feel like a broken record (I stick up for BA & Rock a bit), but compared to the rest of the league, Brewers fans are exceedingly lucky. I never felt that way, but with Extra Innings for the first time this season, I can say with certainty that it could be worse. A lot worse. And, honestly, it really couldn't get much better. Here's basically how it breaks down imo, and I promise this is free from homerism. Vin Scully Upper tier of the rest of the guys (MIL, FLA (I like them), etc.) Middle of the pack Len 'n' Bob, Sutton/Grace, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDIT: Is this poor technically poor grammar? Ahhh, cruel irony! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif To answer the question, yes, it is poor grammar. Just like saying, "I'm going over by Fred's house", when you really mean, "I'm going over to Fred's house"
  22. If Hardy can be coerced into playing 3B, wow. That'd be an amazing thing for the Crew. If not, it's too bad Gamel couldn't stick there defensively.
  23. Their bullpen is in sad shape right now. Last night if DeRosa didn't make that diving-laid out catch in rightfield with the bases loaded in the 8th inning, the bases would have cleared and it could have been 6-5. That was an incredible play! I don't know how one can describe it & do it justice with words, but that was a great AB by Luis Gonzalez, who fouled off 3 or 4 2-2 pitches until he got one to mash, and he did so. A screamer into the RC gap, and DeRosa had equal parts leap into the air + full-extension dive at a full-speed run. DeRosa has been having a tremendous season. He's really impressed me (not that that means a whole lot). His versatility, coupled with being solid to good defensively, is just a huge asset for the Cubs. I'd like to hear cubfan1126 weigh in on Mark.
  24. Mmmmm... most home games remaining of any playoff-hunting team. Gotta love that.
  25. Way to go JJ!! I'm glad I was wrong about you! Now there's some honesty! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif JJ is a perfect #2 hitter. Before the season, I felt he was better suited down near #6, but the OBP/BB growth that Ennder correctly forecasted prior to this season has helped J.J. thrive in the #2 slot. I think we should keep in mind to cool our jets a bit, though, and not make a definitive or semi-definitive player analysis while said player is in the midst of a hot streak. I think Gobias has Hardy's relative line pegged fairly well. But a .350 OBP & .450 SLG from a good-fielding SS is certainly a luxury.
