  1. Marmol as CP restricts his usage & will keep him out of many (possibly most) of the highest-leverage situations. In that sense, this is good news for us.
  2. Katie Holmes in Batman Begins = Jar-Jar Binks in The Phantom Menace Thankfully Christopher Nolan had the good sense to re-cast.
  3. Then why aren't they advisers of GM's or something? To my knowledge, this guy just sits in his basement and plugs numbers, but maybe he actually does work for a team or something. TWR, why is it that you so often take the view that statistical analysis is antagonistic? I just don't understand why you're so quick to scoff, taunt, & in some cases mock the hard work that people do in the hopes that fans like you & me can improve our understanding of the game. As far as the Marcel Projections for Durham, I take them with a grain of salt. Marcel's methodology is pretty crude. 2007 pulls down Durhams projection for this season too far. He's not great, but 350/415 wouldn't seem unreasonable given his track record. Not a bad bench guy. Great points Robideaux. Marcels is supposed to be a crude 'quick & dirty' projection; certainly not intended to do anything more than make a relatively well-educated guess. I'm certainly not an expert, but if Durham can go .350/.400/.750 for the rest of the way, I think we should be very happy.
  4. 4) As others have mentioned up the thread, he destroys the Cubs and Cardinals. Imho it's unrealistic expectations to think he'll continue to play as far over his head as he already has against these clubs. Besides, does he do a scouting report on laundry? Players have changed over the years. 6) Dillon can't pinch-hit, anyway. He's actually got a good approach for a PH. The .350 OPB this season & .390 from 2007 are indicators, but what I like is his compact stroke. I really wish Dillon could stay with the team, but he's a valuable insurance chip in Triple-A now.
  5. Branyan's defense is so much better than Hall's I just don't know what to say. Apparently 'you Branyan haters' just saw a couple plays they didn't like.
  6. You'd have to think that one of Sheets/Sabathia will be back (Sheets, Gagne, Mota, and Capuano combine for almost $28M) No, you don't have to. We can handle one of those AAVs, but not the total seasons Sheets & CC will likely get in FA. Not to mention that a large chunk of that $28M will go to arbitration raises.
  7. The only thing troubling me about Prince is his .360 OBP right now. Once his BA rises, the OBP will get back up in the .375/.390 range. Yes, total guess or assumption, but Prince is just such a talented batter. His BBs have been fine imo.
  8. In other words, he'll have to play very well simply to have a bad season relative to what was expected of him. If Weeks plays very well the rest of the way out, he'd hit the projections. If he improves marginally he'd be near that bottom of the bell curve you describe, imo.
  9. So we are replacing a .199/.280 lead off hitter against righties with a .318/.398 guy. Why are you complaining? But the problem, as described by the modified projection tool, is that there's really no reason to expect a .400 OBP from Ray the rest of the way (nor should Weeks be expected to only post a .320 OBP). I like the addition since it gives us more solid depth at a spot of weakness on the roster. Nothing to complain about.
  10. Russell Branyan's .125/.160/.167/.327 over 25 PA doesn't make me think he'll never hit again. Prince Fielder has actually had a fantastic season at the plate so far. His .857 OPS is only misleading in that it doesn't show that his best production has been more recent. June & July OPS over .900. Bill Hall's 1.186 OPS in the month of July has been huge. Did using him more efficiently help his approach? J.J. Hardy - June: .969, July: 1.213 (Please stop asking Hardy to bunt) Braun - May: 1.050, June: .786, July: 1.013. Braun's plate discipline so far in July has shown improvement. Cameron's OPS has been climbing since early/mid-June Corey Hart's .749 July OPS doesn't look so troubling when you look at his teammates' months, but his low OBP is to me. Also, we got that Sabathia guy.
  11. The Brewers payroll is around $90M right now, but I see it as more of a 'perfect storm' salary situation. The team has been profitable, and with the timing of the contracts, our young stars are still cheap. With the team's success, and the chance to 'go for it', it's an all-or-nothing move in a season where we might as well. We know we have Sheets & Sabathia now, our offense has been good to good enough. I hadn't checked until now, but both the offense & pitching are at 106 OPS+ & 106 ERA+. That should be a playoff-caliber duo if it can be sustained. In terms of a bidding war, don't forget both LA teams, the Mets, Houston, maybe even Philly, maybe Detroit (?). The problem in trying to retain either SP aside from the bidding is the risk inherent in long pitcher contracts.
  12. Gaudin could be a solid pickup for CHC if he can provide a fresh arm in the bullpen (of course injury insurance too). They certainly could add another bullpen arm, though. They don't have superstars in the OF, but Soriano/Fukudome/Ward/Edmonds/Johnson/sometimes DeRosa isn't a bad group, and DeRosa/Fontenot/Theriot/Cedeno for the MIF spots. Obviously the remaining three spots on the diamond are covered for the time being. Aside from Soriano, no real serious injuries yet. A key injury could help decide the Central, in any direction.
  13. I know this has been mentioned in a couple other threads, but I just want to make sure everyone is aware for at least tomorrow's games. MLB Extra Innings is currently on a free preview. I don't know how long it will last. Watched the Astros down the Cubs tonight (& on Houston's broadcast, no less)
  14. At what point should the Cubs and their fans get nervous? Maybe when we're 3 games back, playing the Giants, and they've lost 2 in a row at Houston (who's now won 4 in a row) http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Fukudome K looking on 0-2 fastball at the knees on the outside corner Fontenot in, not Cedeno 0-0: swing & miss on 96 high heat 0-1: swing & miss on 86 mph offspeed 0-2: changeup (86) barely missed off the outside half 1-2: 97 mph high heat fouled back 1-2: 98 mph foul ball ricocheted out of Ausmus's glove -- could have been strike 3 1-2: change (85) fouled off 1-2: change (86) sliced at SS, great leaping stab by Tejada 4-1 win, Astros!
  16. Valverde to face DeRosa - Fukudome - Cedeno DeRosa swinging K on a 3-2 pitch
  17. 10-9 now in Baltimore http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. Pence-Wigginton-Ausmus Down in order: F8, K, K
  19. Brocail in for the 8th: Lee, Ramirez, Soto Lee chops to Brocail, who tries to throw it away, but Berkman bails him out with a nice tag on Lee. Ramirez broken bat grounder, retired 5-3. Soto pops out to shallow RF. Headed to bottom half, 4-1 Houston
  20. RHRP Chad Gaudin in to face El Caballo. Carlos F8, no runners advance. 2 down. Tejada grounds out meekly 4-1 HOU, headed to 8th
  21. Zambrano looking fatigued. BBs Kaz Matsui on a high fastball (only 89 mph) for ball 4. Erstad chops to 2Bman Cedeno, who looked to throw home instead of taking the DP chance. He definitely had the runner at 2B, but had brain lock & only got Erstad at 1B. Big Puma hits one to the hole on the left side, Theriot has no play. Zambrano is done. Lou going to the 'pen
  22. PH David Newhan leadoff triple to the hill in CF
  23. Nice! Sampson K's Ward on a 1-2 breaking ball. 3-1 Astros heading to the bottom of 7
  24. Even though I knew it wouldn't have been true, I still managed to see "Matt Cain" and get excited for about a nanosecond before I read the sentence as a whole. Sorry, Stevo -- was just being goofy, not trying to prank. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  25. Rodriguez K's Fukudome for out #1. That's Wandy's 7th K tonight. Cedeno chops out to 3B for 2nd out. CrayZ homers on a wall-scraper over the short porch in RF. Theriot singles; Coop yanks Rodriguez for RHRP Chris Sampson (to face PH Daryle Ward)
