I just don't think Yost knows the difference between a good result, and good execution. This is one of my biggest concerns with Ned. What's funny about that? Nothing. I never said anything was funny about it. Seems to me those that have made up their minds that Ned is bad want to have it both ways...He was bad back then - and was the reason they have been bad, but now that the players are better, so we still don't have to give him any credit, or consider him competent. That does nothing to address my question, compounded with making broad-sweeping assumptions about what I think (that also happen to be completely untrue) Silly question, but no, many here in the lunatic fringe would give him an F, Keep your insults to yourself. This was a nice discussion until you got ugly. I gave Yost an average grade because -- gasp! -- he's an average manager. Is this the point where someone throws out the term strawman? Apparently.
The freeze-frame where you can select the clip should make Corey's wife, mom, mother-in-law, and anyone that loves adorable little girls proud. Strong paternal instinct! Watching the clip again, his daughter saw it coming & ducked for cover even before Corey tried to shield her. Heads up kid! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
Cubs loss today has us at 4 GB from the division lead. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The NL East in general is dangerous -- Florida (play @ LAD tonight), Philly, NYM, Atlanta. Oh and of course add in StL, Arizona & LAD. Lotta teams to fend off. Games remaining v. the above list: FLA: 0 PHI: 4 (all away) NYM: 3 (all home) ATL: 3 (all away) STL: 6 (all away) ARI: 0 LAD: 3 (all away) That's a tough draw. Of the combined 19 remaining games, 16 are road games. On the other hand, the remaining home schedule is pretty light save the 7 Cubs games.
Of course that's two stellar Bush outings (easily his two best, I think) that I had to miss bc they were day games. Rather he do well, though. Hats off, Dave Bush -- absolutely brilliant on the hill today! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
I like the notion of getting Parra out now, and having him around for late season & a possible postseason. The rollercoaster ride of 2008: ST: Too much SPing! May: Ruh roh. July: Too much SPing! It's good to have this good problem back again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
Congrats Corey! I liked his quote from the radio interview that 'you never know how many chances you'll have to play in an ASG'. And in Yankee Stadium's final season, no less! Am I wrong in remembering that neither Braunie nor Hart have ever played in Yankee Stadium? Heck, has Benny? Quite an honor & experience.
It's interesting to see how many people vote based on his talent. If we had the 2003 roster, and were way out of the playoff chase -- with crappy players -- would Yost get a D?
So, the team that people say 'only scores on HRs'... today: 4 2B, 1 3B, and 8 of 11 runs scored via non-HR swings. and 'always gets owned by crappy SP'... JDLR's line: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER (0 HR)
June 21 (Home): 8 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K June 27 (Away): 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K July 2 (Home): 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K July 7 (Away): 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 8 K David Dewitt Bailey's Louisville Bats/MiLB player page
The team is still looking to make this team better, even it means that this year's budget will be exceeded. I think that's great and I can't ask for anything more out of an owner. Oh, for certain. I just think it's a sort of financial semantics that's been bandied about -- some people are skeptical of whether or not this will really put the Brewers in the red or not. I think, given the history of baseball finances, that's a justifiable position... whether anyone believes Attanasio is hiding profits or not. Either way, it's not all that important, is it? Could the argument be made that 'hiding profits' benefits the product on the field in the long run? I'm in over my head on the finances talk, so I'm going to bow out... I'll be interested if anyone can discuss whether or not 'hiding profits' could theoretically help put a better product on the field.
I give him a C-. He doesn't hurt us as much as some might think, but he is definetly not helping either. Yes, fully agree here. C- from me. Ned actually does some things a lot more favorable imo than the vast majority of MLB skippers. Unfortunately, he tends to handle on-the-fly decisions poorly, and those stand out way more than not putting on the hit-&-run, etc. Ned's stubbornness is likely to kill this team long before it ever helps this team. This is what troubles me, and I believe it goes with my 'he handles on-the-fly decisions poorly'. Ned appears to feel most comfortable when he can 'define' & 'plan' for things. This is probably a good quality for a bench coach, but is a big weakness for a manager imho.
Attanasio has done things to show that he is different than other owners. He has given fans a free game. He sits in the stands and talks to fans rather than secluding himself all the time in a luxury suite (some other owners may do it, but I don't think it's standard practice). Other owners do things like these or do these exact things. Aside from that, these have nothing to do with financial reporting. I don't begrudge your thinking of Attanasio as an individual, I just don't think it's very likely that someone that has been so successful in high finance is going to come in & miss on a chance to better his financial situation by hiding profits, when that's the common practice in business in general, let alone baseball. That's where I get the 'black pen in a pack of red ones' analogy. There are franchises that pocket revenue sharing money and don't improve the team. They deserve to be criticized for failing to provide a worthy product. But that isn't the case with Attanasio. The talk, as far as I can tell, has been about whether or not Attanasio's claim that the Brewers are going to be in the red this season, not whether or not he uses revenue sharing to improve the team. Just because Attanasio isn't as scummy as some doesn't mean he's not scummy enough to do something that every other MLB owner does (hiding profits)
I guess as long as they really only give him garbage time I have no problem with that, someone's gotta pitch those innings anyway, but that doesn't explain why he was in a run game yesterday. Yeah, unfortunately Yost has no clue how to have Mota on the roster & NOT get him into close situations. If someone can convince Yost that Mota is now his 'Lead/Deficit of 5 runs or more' guy, then we're all set! As an aside, I actually think Guillermo would provide good value to the team in that role. 'He can pitch multiple innings & go on back-to-back days', huh? Put that into practice.
This is where we differ. I am going to treat Mark like an individual and not be prejudiced against him because of the actions of others. Isn't this a bit like buying a pack of red pens & hoping that one of them really writes with black ink? I'm not saying that I know anything about finances in specific, however, in general MLB owners have the chance to & most often do muddy the waters when it comes to profitablility.
I must agree with Haudricourt that I think I would like to give Luis Pena a shot. If Pena can't do better than Mota, my name is Sally Struthers. http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/6/6b/311_sallys.jpeg
Why, in the name of all that is holy, does Ned Yost believe that the superior short reliever should be used in the case of a 3 run lead, while the designated bullpen millstone (even Yost has to think that's what Mota is right now) is the right guy for the 1 run deficit? Unfortunately, it's a simple answer. Ned, like most other MLB managers, is dumb.
Simply put, if it's a close call on the bases, it's probably wrong. That's gross overstatement, even though I agree with you that the umping has been even worse this season than last... never though that possible. I think we've been through this before. Hands down, the worst ever was the 1985 World Series blown call by Don Denkinger. The guy still gets death threats about it. I was too young to see this. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Yunel Escobar being called out on a bunt attempt while being a couple steps past the bag was the worst I've ever seen. Yeah, that was bad... forgot about that one. That probably edges the Weeks non-call, but honestly not by much imo. The Cuzzi, Lane crew is the one I can't stand. It's like they actively start going after players and teams. Yes, the 'HEY?1!?1! WHUT'D U SAY TO ME!' attitude is a big-time problem imo. The funny thing is that it's typically the same umps (as you note) that have this little-man syndrome. When I heard Sandy Alderson was in charge of the umpiring, and that Bruce Froemming was going to be involved this season, I naively hoped for better umpiring. Unfortunately I was wrong.
He was, but he tagged him with the ball in his bare hand, too. You could see on the replay that a lightbulb kinda went on for Rickie, and he tagged the runner while he was still nowhere near 2B.
Yeah, this was probably the worst crew the Brewers have had all season. The lack of umpiring accountability in MLB is flat-out embarassing. The call last night where the baserunner overslid 2B, with Weeks holding the tag on him, was the worst missed call I've ever seen in MLB. Definition of making the call before you're sure it's correct... the ump only cared that the runner beat the tag. Hey, he made his call -- the guy was safe! Not his fault if there's something that happens after that... right? I was ticked that Yost had zilch to say on that one, but I'll stop my vent there.
