  1. Is it OK just to try and answer sports related questions objectively? http://www.sandersartstudio.com/catalog/VerdictFirstSentenceAfterwards.jpg Off wit' his head!
  2. Edwin Jackson was really, really tough for Tampa last night. He was consistently touching 94/95 with his FB, and locating quite well for a guy throwing that hard. Keep in mind this was the Yankees without Rodriguez or Posada, and Cano still really cold. Not trying to take anything away from TB (or their season), just wanted to point out that this was more along the lines of a fluky 2-1 win at home -- fluky as in a 'could've gone either way' game.
  3. At least he still gets to feel important.
  4. At least FtJ will be overjoyed
  5. Caplinger said it was possible. I'm trying to temper my optimism.
  6. Why would Branyan make a good backup 1B? Are you talking about interleague games in AL ballparks only? I am not saying he wouldn't be a nice backup to Prince, just that there isn't really any way he should start against lefties and no way Prince should be out vs righties. I agree actually. I agreed that, should Prince need a day off v. RHP for any reason (injury, fatigue, personal, etc.), it's nice to not 'drop' to Dillon v. RHP. Branyan should not sub for Prince v. lefties, but thankfully we have Dillon as the foil.
  7. I recall both kinds of comments being made over the course of the 6-game skid. I don't have the time to dig for them.
  8. I hear ya... I just don't think the time to rest Prince is v. RHP. Now certainly there are circumstances where it'd work, but on the whole, if Prince is struggling, I wouldn't want to see him get a day off v. RHP -- that'd be his best shot (imo) to getting back on track. But we agree that Branyan can help this team both in platooning with or spelling Hall, coupled with his ability to provide nice backup at 1B. The point that he is not as huge a dropoff as Dillon warrants consideration.
  9. Russell's played over 300 innings at 1B in his career, so I'm guessing he could handle it. However, I don't think giving Prince days off v. RHP is the way to go. Prince is actually quite good v. LHP, but Branyan is someone you should hide from lefties. Just for clarity's sake, Russ's career MLB OPS v. RHP: .811
  10. And as I asked on the other topic, if you could you take Berkmans career numbers and yearly output would you, or would you reject those for the potential that Prince obviously brings? Just a little hypothetical for ya. Prince. Fielder. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'd not heard "Big Puma"... I don't really get it, therefore it's making me laugh, therefore I kinda like it.
  11. I don't think the argument that "NED YOST IZ THE REEZUN THE BREWERS WILL NEVER WYNN" is worth much of anyone's time. I know the hyperbole has been thrown around here a bit, but from what I can recall, the discussion on BF's forums tends to center around, 'Does he do a good job putting his players in favorable matchups?' If one polarizes the argument as much as Begel has, then it's simple. Trouble is (imo), the analysis of a manager's contribution is never simple, since there aren't any truly reliable 'measuring sticks/points.' It's very subjective.
  12. But if you research it, you'd see that your assessment is incorrect. Branyan is slaughtering Triple-A right now, and has a career MLB OPS of > .800.
  13. Yeah, that's arguably been the most overlooked SP -- Pos. Player combo over the past 5 seasons. Those two are awesome. A buddy of mine a few years back coined (at least, amongst our circle) the forever-etched in my memory banks nickname: "Fatty Berks" He hated Berkman, but it was because he's so good, & looks like he just got off the buffet line. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. How well they've pitched, though, isn't what I think people are talking about when they mention lack of depth on the 'Stros pitching staff. Just because guys have played over their heads doesn't necessarily mean their talent has improved. And unless Matsui & Bourn prove they can get on base consistently, Houston will have your typical defensive-minded setup at CF & 2B. Speed is fun, and can be useful, but nowhere near to the ability to consistently get on-base. Berkman is a fine player, but that unsustainable .800 SLG is the main reason he's leading the league in those categories. No player has ever been able to keep that kind of SLG going for a season. It certainly wasn't that 'you tried to sell him & no one would listen'. The discussion was about taking Prince over Berkman, and I still would. I think nearly every NL Central fan knows how killer Berkman is at the plate. [Zambrano's] strikeouts are way down as well as his walks and his ERA. I personally would be worried about a guy as K-reliant as Zambrano having his K rates go down. The BB decrease is nice, but only time will tell in both cases, of course. ERA is a team stat, and is terrible to try to apply as a gauge of talent, especially over only a handful of IP.
  15. Gagne's changeup is still incredibly effective when he can locate it. Mixing it in with his 91-41 FB makes a wicked combo. Not sure why there's all this animosity like Gagne is the only player -- or only Brewr -- since Bonds to juice. His name just happened to be in the Mitchell Report, and it's turning into a weak 'bashing' point imo. The guy's struggles have nothing to do with steroids/HGH right now, and everything to do with locating. If he'd have been having location problems like this, he'd have struggled while during his prime too. Has little to nothing to do with velocity.
  16. You called him a 'rummy'. His 2007 & 2008 stats indicate that that was unfair & inaccurate. That's all I was saying.
  17. Yeah, Yost did a nice job to get Bush out of there before a big inning... for once. It felt nice, but then again, so did scoring 8 runs. It's funny how a pitcher is able to relax & trust his stuff when he knows that the game can't change on one pitch. I doubt there's any sabermetric stuff to back this up, but I've always felt like it must be easier to pitch well when you know the other team isn't breathing right down your neck. More like playing keep-away than hot potato
  18. It wouldn't surprise me much if he was only pretending not to know who Will Inman was, because 99% of his audience doesn't know and would be put off by being expected to know. I wish this weren't the case. I think it could help eliminate some of the booing to have more knowledgeable fans. Couldn't BF work out something like a contributing role with the MJS? Free publicity or something? It would seem to help all sides.
  19. HP ump Paul Schrieber really had a solid strikezone tonight. That was a nice change of pace. I don't have TiVO, but I thought the call Molina threw his temper-tantrum on was borderline.
  20. I feel like part of me wants the mixtape of the songs that play on Extra Innings instead of showing the pre & postgame stuff.
  21. Just want to point out that Ned hasn't lost his mind... for some odd reason (small sample possibly, but I'm not sure) Ankiel's splits v. LHP have been better in his career than v. RHP
  22. I know, I saw Molina yapping, but when the cameras didn't follow it, I shrugged it off for a few seconds -- thought Molina must've been joking around. Guess not. What a classless crap-act he pulled tonight. He deserves whatever suspension is coming.
  23. earn it in Boston. we'll see if you are a great closer there and only there. So if he goes out & is 3/3 in save situations in Boston, then stinks the rest of the year, is he still a "great closer"?
