  1. Is that analysis based on more than his 2008 line? I think if you look at his whole career (yes, minor leagues count), I don't think you can say that with any amount of certainty.
  2. I should've probably clarified my post. In terms of the added innings I'm thinking continuing his current role and increasing the sample size. I personally don't want to see him as a starter since I think if he gets a role for the entire year in the bigs I could get a better idea of his true talent level. I know he's finally starting to feel 100% healthly (he had tommy john surgery 2003 and missed most of 2004). Ok, now I gotcha. Yes, he might BB less than his career norms as a RP, but I'd be more inclined to see any dip as more related to a RP sample size than an improvement in talent. No, I'm not just looking for ways to be negative. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. I do think though that Tampa moving him around from a starter to relief to closer didn't work out for Seth. Heehee -- I love irony. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif From what I've read about that switch, the decision came largely because Seth didn't work out enough. I'm especially intrigued by his Ks/9 and seeing how that plays out with more innings. He Ks a lot of guys, but unfortunately he offsets a lot of that value by BBing a ton of guys too. To give him even more innings in which to walk guys is something I don't think is a good idea. I'd much rather take my chances with Bush (with a competent manager) & co. than start giving Seth starts. I think he can be very useful in the mop-up role.
  4. I think it's a safer bet to look at his career work, instead of one or two or three games/IP.
  5. Wrong! My opinion is based on a rotation of Sheets, Suppan, Villanueva, Parra, and Bush I said this: "I understand you have the injury/ies weighed in there too, but it's way too early to know one way or the other about the playoffs." I immediately declared the season "over" as in I don't see anyway the Brewers make the playoffs. I also turned to my wife and told her my secondary reaction that I thought the Brewers may actually go into a bit of a tail spin for the next couple weeks. So if the tail-spin lasts only two weeks, and the Brewers somehow lose all 7 of their following games (incredibly unlikely), they're at 16-24. With 122 games to go. Seeing as how you can't possibly predict what's going to happen to other teams, why would you go to the extreme of "declar[ing] the season over"? You're right, I didn't understand your point on the tailspin. The negativity around here lately has me feeling a bit defensive/offensive/geeked up. I'm sorry I did that.
  6. But the players loved it at first -- he must be a players' manager! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I really haven't seen enough of Showalter managing to feel more than 50-50 on him. Can anyone provide a bit of description of his style?
  7. It's hard to compare some of his seasons, though. Really only '07 & '08 have been teams that "should" win. Hard imo to form a fair opinion on fewer than 2 full seasons. (I think Ned Yost should have been fired last season, fwiw)
  8. I think sbrylski could weigh in on this one. I've only known 6.5 (& love it)
  9. I don't recall saying anything about a "huge jump". But I do think he's going to improve his BBs & OBP. Ennder predicted a nice increase from Hardy's OBP in the offseason, but I never read anything about a huge jump.
  10. Beyond that, the tailspin has happened, and my opinion (as stated in my post) is that their playoff hopes are dead Your opinion is based on 33 of 162 games, or more accurately, just a handful of games. I understand you have the injury/ies weighed in there too, but it's way too early to know one way or the other about the playoffs. But if you just say, "No, I know deep down", then what can anyone say or do? If you can find somewhere I said we were going to go 38-91, I will gladly retract everything I said. You said "tailspin", which apparently is going to cover the remaining 129 games -- please give us your mathematical W-L equivalent. I can't see "tailspin" meaning playing .500 ball, which is currently a slight improvement. At this point, .500 misses the playoffs. EDIT: Want to clarify that I don't think this team will be .500 the rest of the way.
  11. Don't know how good or what kind of a manger he is but people seem to like him. Brenly constantly praises small-ball tactics on Cubs broadcasts & talks about all the old baseball 'truths'. I personally want no part if he manages the way he seems to think (which doesn't seem like much of a stretch). In Arizona he had the two best SP in the game, not to mention a pretty darn good roster beyond that when they won the WS on a couple/few fluky basehits. I don't think he's terrible, but if the chance is truly there to upgrade the manager position, I don't want to just settle for a slight improvement (if there'd even be one at all). I'd love to see Davey Johnson get a shot, but Kremblas would have to try to be worse than Yost.
  12. In my first post following the news on his injury, my opinion was that their playoff hopes were dead, and an immediate tailspin would ensue. Unfortunatley, both of those points seem to be coming true Come on. Self-congratulating already? What about the remaining, oh, 129 games? Oh... we're going to go 38-91, my fault.
  13. I wish I had a nickel when watching from the center field camera I see what looks like off the bat to be a routine out to short or second only to see the Brewer infielder pulled drastically one way or the other and incapable of making the play. I also see Braun too deep when lefthanders are hitting and Hart too deep when righthanders are hitting and way too many bloop hits to the opposite field dropping in You're overgeneralizing here. I wish you paid BF.net a nickel each time the shifts employed led to outs. Until we see some data on the shifting, no one is credible enough to say 'I knows it's true cuz I seen it' Btw, OF shifts play off spray charts, and each hitter is (relatively) unique. Also, the OF is the one that ultimately decides where to stand -- Yost & Co. can't call 'time' & go show the guy exactly where to stand like a teeball game.
  14. Ned Yost is very smart -- he's the mannajur
  15. Russell Branyan 2008 PCL line: 121 PA, .352/.421/.611/1.032, 10 2B, 6 HR Please spare us the 'Triple-A pitchers suck!' line. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Wonderful post! I need not add any of my own feelings on the thread question, as they've pretty much all been covered here. The force is strong with Ozzy. we're only overreacting if they turn it around soon. If they don't we're acting appropriately. So, if the very loud complainers are right, they get to be right, and if they're wrong, they get to say, 'Gee, I'm glad I was wrong!', instead of taking into consideration whether or not they're overreacting? I by no means 'get' to tell people what to think & how to feel, but lately there has been a lot of loud complaining & very little reflection on how accurate said concerns are or aren't. Little attention paid to the Cardinals playing way over their heads, little attention paid to remembering how that season way back in 2007 went, little attention paid to the fact that our hitters are going to start hitting... and lots of 'OMGz! This team is garbage, and anyone who thinks they aren't is wrong!'
  17. Doug Melvin: Uhhhhh, anybody got any'a them 'pitchers'?
  18. Very well done, Robin! yeah your right about the trade, but the point still stands that the Melvin was beat by other teams on the margins. And with Cordero a more astute GM would have resigned Cordero before he hit the market. And if the Brewers "can't afford" Lee at 100 million, we have no chance at resigning Fielder or Braun past their arby years. Beat on the margins? Are you aware of the reality that if we "afford" to pay Prince, etc. for their $100 mil. + contracts, the rest of the team is going to be David Ecksteins/Adam Kennedys? There are plenty of reasons to criticize Melvin, but I don't think you've hit on one of them. The deal Cordero got is not a good gamble; extending RPs long/long-ish term rarely is.
  19. No, he's not. That is, unless your player evaluations are confined to only the bad stretches of a player's career.
  20. I just saw the second Brewer in the last week run through a stop sign (Billy Hall, after Cameron did so this weekend)...do the players have any respect for them any more? Thanks for pointing that out, SF -- I didn't catch that tonight. However, when Cam ran through it last time, my first thought was, 'Akwarrrrrrd...', and then it dawned upon me that the players might not have much love for this coaching staff or some of the members of it.
  21. All he has to do to get 15 this season is hit 14 over roughly 110-120 remaining games. That's really quite plausible.
  22. There is an awful lot of bad baseball teams out there (and its starting to look like there may be one right here in Milwaukee.). This is circular logic. If Melvin is a good GM, he shouldn't have built what you deem possibly a 'bad team'.
  23. Question I have for everybody. Isn't Melvin in trouble too? He put this underperforming team together. He hired Yost. He extended Yost. He hired Skaalen. He hired Maddux. He signed Suppan. He signed Gagne. He signed Turnbow to a multi year deal. I think the main reason we still have Yost is that Melvin can buy himself at least one more season by not firing Ned mid-season. FtJ touched on a lot of things I was going to say in #48. I think Melvin has put himself in the position where he now has a firing of Yost in his back pocket, should things come down to Doug's own job security. With that said, I think that means a firing of Yost (if it were to happen) would come later rather than sooner. That way, Melvin could point to Ned's negative impact... and highlight the new manager's success, or cite a small timeframe that the new mgr. 'needs to be given another year for things to mesh well.'
  24. Can somebody explain why we need two softball forums? Surely they could have been combined into one The Madison forum started as just some threads in the Mke forum. The powers that be here decided they wanted to separate them & create a Madison softball forum. I really don't see why threads in the OT forum aren't adequate for fantasy sports. Iirc the fantasy baseball thread is like 6 pages long now. What's needed per year, three or four threads in OT?
  25. I just thought they'd be a bad team this year and i'm no longer convinced that will be the case. Now i do believe they have a decent shot to stay in the race all year, something that i never would have expected prior to the season. I agree that they're better than I thought they would be, but I don't expect them to stay in the race much longer than the ASB. I mean, those numbers I posted are downright scary-fluky.
