  1. Wow. I'd love to hear your qualifications on that one. I don't agree that he's necessarily the worst/one of the worst, but one of the best? No way.
  2. Congrats, bensheeps! Be sure to give this thread a bump (if necessary) as the date approaches. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. It's a no-brainer to not give away your highest-ceiling offensive player who has yet to hit his prime, yet still matches Roberts's prime-era production. Roberts's OBPs from the past 3 seasons: .377, .347, .387 Weeks is already well in that range, and his power makes Roberts's look like a minor-leaguer.
  4. Cabrera is clearly better than avg (defensively) in CF. Damon is about average (save arm strength) in LF, Cano, Molina, A-Rod is at worst slightly below-avg., even with regression/aging. To call them 'terrible' just isn't accurate imo. I know you've pointed out to me before about how Hughes & Kennedy are not to be expected to do anything much more than pitch slightly better than replacement-level or worse. Of course I can't go find a thread, but I know I'm not mistaking you for anyone. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I don't think they've done well yet, but I think that expecting them to pitch as poorly as they have thus far (esp. Hughes) for the remainder of 2008 is a bad bet.
  5. I'm sorry, are you saying that somehow Rickie's superior OBP is supposed to be randomly ignored, or that Ned did so (randomly ignored the OBP)?
  6. So the fact that Hall's BA is barely better than Weeks's, yet Rickie's OBP is better just gets ignored, huh?
  7. Ok, good point trav. Deep down I knew Ned could make me upset on this! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif However, I think it's important to remember that those are a reporter's words, not Ned's. If you even change the quip as minutely as from "to let INF Craig Counsell..." to "and let INF Craig Counsell...", it's a huge difference imo.
  8. I can't get too upset about this -- if Ned felt the decision to give either guy a day off (based on scouting, etc.) was basically even, what's the harm?
  9. Actually no, there is really no reason to believe that Hughes and Kennedy are going to be lights out this year. Maybe by the end of the year, but young pitchers usually struggle and add in a terrible defense and you can have some bad days. So far, any time I've said anything about Hughes & Kennedy being solid, you've jumped in to tell me they aren't going to be lights-out. Why? Are you misreading what I type? 'Terrible defense" isn't accurate (imo) -- seems a bit of an overstatement. They're no Colorado or whatever, but certainly aren't Florida.
  10. The Rays can easily finish in second in this division. Easily? I can't agree with that. Perhaps they'll take 3rd easily, but even then you never know. The Yankees are not nearly as vulnerable as you think. Their offensive depth is actually very sound (save at C), and imo it's only a matter of time before Hughes & Kennedy get things going. Hughes actually had a nice start derailed by a rain delay in (iirc) his last outing.
  11. They might well be as good as TOR, but I still feel they are too young to win 81. What about when Cliff Floyd comes back? He's old! Vin Scully said it best during a Dodgers broadcast last week: "This isn't a young man's game; this isn't an old man's game; this is a strong man's game."
  12. Off days suck, but not really this time. Watching the brewers lately has been a frustrating task. I needed a day off. Amen, man... amen. I remember from 2007, too, that the off-days did as much for me mentally as I'm sure they did for the players physically & mentally. Here's hoping Sheets is actually at full health & not just postponing something major. Hopefully the day off will do some good and having Cameron back can give them a boost even though that means Gywnn sits now. It's a boost in two ways! -- better hitter, and takes poor hitter out of the everyday lineup. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. I don't like how old the Mets are in certain areas -- I think they'll be fortunate to get a full season from Delgado, who knows what Pedro can offer, and if (I know, just random speculation) Santana misses any significant time, the Mets are in trouble. I'd agree with sbryl, though, that the Rays would not be the best team in the NL East. It'd be close, but I think both the Phils & Mets are a tick better as they stand today.
  14. What would happen if a vampire bit a zombie, or vice versa? http://homerderby.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/z-big-sad.jpg
  15. I will be there Wednesday... this is my first sporting event outside of the state of Wisconsin. I'm very excited. Zman, you're going to have a blast! Wrigley is fun, but even moreso with a Brewers win. Be ready for any & everything from Cubs 'fanz', and know that most of it probably won't happen, but be prepared to get some crap, and you'll be just fine.
  16. These guys are for the most part, very young, and selection is clearly an issue. Good pitches go by, bad pitches we swing. But we also mash good pitches, and let bad ones go by... just like other MLB squads. I don't feel that age has much (if anything) to do with it.
  17. I feel like the definition of what's "dependable" has gotten thrown way out of whack (not aimed at you, joshjs). There's really no team in MLB that has any more than one RP of what many here are deeming 'dependable'. I think the Crew has one of the best 'pens in the NL, hence the strong record despite pedestrian offense.
  18. They've wasted too many good pitching performances. The close games have put a strain on the bullpen and having to play every game where every pitch is big is draining mentally and it's only April. So do you mean you expect the trend of bullpen necessity to continue? I'd be shocked if that happened. The notion that we've wasted "too many" great starts... are the division & WC races over due to this? Yes, I know it's been frustrating, but there are just so many absolutes in your logic there. Once the offense starts performing at its norms, the strain on the pitching staff, and especially the bullpen, will be reduced. But I'm sure then -- in general -- it'll be that this is how things are supposed to be, and 'finally' the hitters don't suck anymore, not that teams go through ups & downs.
  19. I'm really worried that "tightness" means 'something that could be very, very serious, but we're not yet sure. We're going to trust Sheets in telling us he can pitch, but it could get worse.' I really, really hope that nothing 'pops' in there tomorrow. Rotator cuff... not fun. If this really were as simple as some muscle 'stiffness', shouldn't simple stretching be enough to get Ben comfortable? That's an honest question. I do not want to see Sheets make every 3rd or 4th start with limited effectiveness. Guess I'd rather have that than no Sheets, though. EDIT: Any word yet on Sheets? His velocity was right around what he threw in Cincy, and the BBs are obviously a concern.
  20. We're going to be crying in October when the 3-4 games that we've frittered away this month when we couldn't do anything offensively come back to bite us. Or we might be basking in the glory of those 8-10 games where our offense slugged in 7+ runs for the win during a start where our SP gave up 5 runs in 4 IP. I am just worried that we're going to fall behind too far too fast. Yes, we're only 2 games out of first, and yes, we do have some reason to be optimistic since our record is better than our performances have been. Also... how many left to play? 137! I can't possibly get myself worried yet. If the team was performing close to expected, and were 9-16... maybe.
  21. I don't think Mike Cameron will suddenly make every guy in the lineup a better hitter, that's ridiculous. Completely untrue. Mike Cameron is going to heal Ben Sheets's shoulder with a wink & a kiss, and make us all 2.75x better baseball fans than we ever could dream to be. Mike Cameron for President.
  22. Thank goodness for the off-day... my brain needs time to clear a spot for Mike Cameron's awesomeness. Words cannot describe how excited I am for the upcoming series @ CHC.
  23. I'd have to imagine that pitch counts would supercede innings, since PC's tend to dictate how many IP a guy can go, right?
  24. The numbers aren't exact, but it was something like a 1.55 ERA in 70 of his outings, and a 77.40 in 7 of his outings. When he blew up, he blew up pretty bad, but for the most part, he was very good. Led the league in scourless outings as well. Great BAA... Inherited runners were TBow's problem. If you only look at ERA you can miss a lot about pitchers. And don't forget his horrific BB rate from '07 -- 6.1 BB/9. 6.1!
  25. Thanks for chiming in, Alex. I'm not even close a minor-league expert by any stretch, but we do have a few that post consistently in the Minor Leagues forum. Also, you can check out the Power 50 rankings. If I had to name a guy or two, I'd suggest Matt LaPorta (though he's hardly a sleeper), & Alcides Escobar (coming into his own as a hitter with sweet D). Others will know better than me, however.
