  1. Prrrrrrrrrrrrrince Fielder! Let me see that... bomb-ba-bomb bomb bomb! http://us.ent2.yimg.com/musicfinder.yahoo.com/images/yahoo/def_soul/sisqo/sisqo2.jpg EDIT: Just wanted to share this from McCalvy's game recap today: "Cardinals right-hander Brad Thompson (1-1) took the loss after surrendering the home run to Fielder on a 1-2 breaking ball. Much has been made of Fielder's power outage this season, but he now has as many home runs as he did at this time last year, when he did not hit No. 2 until April 20. Fielder went on to become the youngest player in Major League history to hit 50 homers in a season"
  2. Granted the 2008 start is extremely small samples and Floyd with miss time with meniscus injury but Gabe Gross doesn't look all that fearsome as a LH bat specializing in playing versus the RH's. I guess that depends if you think we should ignore Gross's production in 2006, another season in which Floyd missed much time due to injury. .274/.382/.476/.858
  3. Here's the DL Informer's update: Alfonso Soriano's MRI Results Wednesday, April 16, 2008 One of fantasy baseball's premier speed/power threats received some very good news today when his MRI revealed a strain of his calf - not an Achilles injury. Still, this is an injury that will take some time to heal, as the calf is always contracting when a person is standing. Matter of fact, the calf is the only muscle in the body that is continuously contracting when a person is standing upright. This delays healing, of course, because the tissue is attempting to heal itself. Expect him to be out longer than the initial 2-week DL stint. I would say 4-5 weeks sounds about right, putting a return sometime in the latter half of the 1st week of May or early part of the 2nd week of May. Probably the best (or close to it) news for the Cubs & their fans. Still a long time to go without Soriano, though.
  4. Your piece sort of glosses over that a large part of player development is minor-league performance, bobskube! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I get your 'fandom' point, though. I just about posted the same link MH did... phew! Included in Sickels's post are some "mediocre pics" (his phrasing) of Inman's delivery (does Will sport the dreaded 'Inverted W?'), here's what Sickels had to say: "Will Inman, RHP, San Antonio: Fastball ranged from 87 to 92. Mixed in curveball, slider, and changeup. Like Hynick, he was getting squeezed on close calls but it didn't appear to annoy him quite as much as it did Hynick, at least early in the game. Gave up a long homer to Dan Carte on a hanging breaking ball. Secondary stuff was more impressive than [Tulsa SP Brandon] Hynick's." Glad to hear Will has been doing so well, since that means I'll see him here in Portland all the sooner.
  5. SLG % after 14 games can't possibly be justified as the reason, imo. Hart will, in all likelihood, SLG at least equal to what Hall will do this season. But Bill's propensity to swing & miss a lot, imo, makes him better suited for 6th, whereas Corey's approach fits better at #5. I genuinely believe Yost is slotting them where they are now based on some wacky 'I need to generate SB opportunities' nonsense.
  6. My 'suggestion' is that he wasn't worth the cost. Linebrink was an average to above-avg. RP, but we paid for him based on his 'elite' reputation.
  7. Best game of the year for him. Terrible. Right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif Using small samples will lead you to plenty of hasty conclusions.
  8. The Cubs were not even close to being head and shoulders, no doubt about it better than the Brewers last year Agreed 100% And let me say again that I'm in no means calling for Ned Yost to be fired after an 8-6 start. I just think in the long run he isn't the right man for the job, and I've felt that way for a long time. Yes, I agree... along with your notion that many of the defenses of Yost have little or nothing to do with how he -- personally -- has done as manager. Also, let me say that I do not root for him to fail; I just get frustrated when the same kinds of mistakes are repeated.
  9. Is that based on watching on TV, or in person? I'm more inclined to trust an opinion if it's from an 'in-person' report. Nothing I have seen to this point in the season changes my mind about long term contracts with either player. Contracts that are longer than 4 years are irresponsible for a club like Milwaukee. Signing either to a contract that doesn't buy out at least 1 year of free agency is also a complete waste. It is also way to early to make any judgement about either player with regards to their performance. Preach on, brother logan! I have nothing to add, aside from that I enjoyed reading this.
  10. Does anyone know of a website where I can take a look at these "scouting reports?" I have no idea, but if I had to guess, I'd say that the teams probably wouldn't want that kind of stuff as 'public access'
  11. But since it's the first pitch, there seems to be some kind of law that says "let it go by" I think the team's approach was great in the 4th inning last night, just as an example of why going after a first pitch isn't always a great idea. They finally started to work Wainwright as a team -- first Braun's two-out single, then great ABs from Fielder, Hall, & Hart (up to Corey not taking his final pitch towards RC... I still think he could've put that one in the gap).
  12. I'm confused... does the thread title have anything to do with the question posed in the OP?
  13. Joe was no-Torre-ous for over-reliance on vets in NY. One of the main reasons he wasn't retained. I apologize for the gratutious pun. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  14. ... and my first night of Extra Innings comes to a close. Oh man, was it great! Got to see KC's closer Joakim Soria look filthy-nasty tonight closing it out at LAA, in addition to my first Brewers game of the season.
  15. I've seen every Weeks at-bat outside ~5 AB's since he got called up. Me too, save every game [this season] up to tonight when I finally added Extra Innings. Those numbers you posted aren't very far off his overall career numbers to this point. Rickie's been injured basically every game up until last August. I have no idea how you are convinced that this identifies the 'problem' in his game. The knee jerks around here lately are mind-boggling. EDIT: Bracketed insertion
  16. Gabe Gross is terrible. I'm tired of seeing him in the lineup. Yea, all he did was go 1-3 with a BB & make a run-saving catch. Hee'zz a bummb! My vent is when people deliver 'scouting reports' on players based on fewer than 100 AB in a single season, totally disregarding whatever else a player has done to this point.
  17. But when he's up with runners on, or RISP he consistently gets behind because he's taking the first pitch. Based on what, 10-15 ABs this season? That's my problem here -- you can't point at something like this and accurately say, 'Well, this is how it's going to be from now on...'
  18. Yes it absolutely is. Especially when it's being used as some sort of predictive tool
  19. My fault. In that case, I'll point to Lee's far superior defense to Fielder's. I agree that the difference wasn't that great when you consider more than offensive stats.
  20. St. Louis is playing way over their heads, and we're playing well under ours. Also, Wainwright (a bonafide stud) was very much 'on' tonight, locating his FB incredibly well, and oh yea, mixing in some killer breaking stuff. They needed a left handed bat. Not a lefthanded bench bat like Gross (who looks to me like he's worthless even as a bench player at this point), but a bona fide threat from the left side. There were guys out there. Everybody laughed when I brought up Cliff Floyd. Floyd is hitting .333/.412/.800 and was available cheap. So because you made a comment about who the Brewers 'should' sign, and he happens to be hitting at an unsustainable clip, you cherry-pick & pat yourself on the back? I fail to see what I'm supposed to 'feel' about this. Floyd was a bad idea for us to sign, since we'll get comparable performance from Gross. That's right, the same Gross that worked his ABs very well tonight, and made a great play in CF to save a run. There were guys out there Who? Floyd? Come on. The whole quandry of this offseason is how this mythical player you claim to have scouted wasn't there.
  21. Taking the first pitch is a very good calculated risk, along with making the pitcher throw at least one more pitch. Also, Weeks's pitch recognition looked really good tonight -- he seemed to learn from mistakes at the plate as the game progressed. I am shocked at the number of reactionary threads on BF.net, the anti-small sample site!
  22. But looking at our lineup is a decent example of why when given the opportunity late in the season to make a big trade to push the team into the playoffs, you do it. The only problem with this logic is that you risk waaaay overpaying for an above-average RP with young arms and getting -- basically -- no gain in return. But Melvin's smart enough to never do that, right? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  23. That's a great indicator of why it's not wise to use 15 or so games to try to 'prove' something
  24. But Lee's power is back right on schedule (~ 1 yr. after wrist surgery, a la Weeks). He's going to be a lot better this year, imo.
  25. If Prince were 25-25 with 25 HR I still wouldn't feel any differently than I do now, or did before he started the season 'cool-ly'. Do not sign young, arby/pre-arby players to extensions unless you get at least one year of FA in return. Even then, if it's only one FA season, I'm not convinced it's worth the gamble.
