  1. Dang... all breaks going to the Cards. Kendall just out. The crazy thing about the 2008 Milwaukee Brewers -- being down three runs doesn't make me say wild stuff like iluvlamp did! Kendall looked safe by a mile. I want what you're sipping. By a mile?
  2. I doubt a 4-yr. deal will get him to stay, as I'd imagine he'll receive at least 6 other 4 yr. offers for equal or greater money... and he'll probably get at least one offer of 5 years. Just guessin', though.
  3. Happy to say that I'm watching my first Brewers game of the season! Unhappy to say that Villy looks like me throwing BP out there right now... Question: Is the 'dual feed' option only on the DirecTV package of Extra Innings? I'm stuck without BA & Bill. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Looks like each game only has one choice of 'feeds'
  4. Wow, I can agree with a lot of things about Yost, but that he didn't crack under the pressure and his juvenile 'mine's bigger' beanball war with LaRussa didn't severely affect the race... no way. I couldn't imagine the amount of "worried?" threads there would be if this were Tigerfan.net. What's funny about the Det. situation is that announcers last night were saying, 'Oh, man -- they're still only 3-10!'... when in reality, they started 0-9... shouldn't a 3-1 stretch be comforting? Anyway, I digress...
  5. You have to be cocky to a certain degree, to be sure, but when you stand out as a cocky-man amongst cocky-boys... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Forunately, I am not a betting man. I'd personally never trust a team's press conference-speak on injuries influence my opinion. Seems like most of the time you just hear things like "shoulder strain" or "back strain", which tend to mean "we don't know exactly what it is yet"/"we don't want to let anyone know how bad it is yet" For the Cubs' sake, I hope it's just a calf strain, but even that carries a longer 'get back to 100%' timeframe than a 15-day DL stint. The estimate I cited earlier was more along the lines of two 15-day visits.
  6. Murton doesn't give off the same vibe that, say, Estrada does, but I wonder if there's a similar (behind the scenes) situation with Matt. He's a poor man's Corey Hart, and I mean that in a good way. Not sure why he wasn't part of their plans anyway, with two LH hitting OFers (Fukudome & Pie). The Cubs must disproportionately hate his lack of defensive prowess, or there's something else going on imo.
  7. If anyone has questions on the Soriano injury, I'd encourage you visit the DL Informer blog, as the author is awesome about answering questions in the "Comments" sections of posts.
  8. I do wish the condescension would stop This, imo, is a really important point in general on the Yost discussions. I, for one, really enjoy discussing the manager's impact objectively, as I feel I learn quite a bit in doing so. Unfortunately, the passions that Robideaux mentioned have more & more stood in the way of actually discussing things in an attempt to learn -- and I've been as guilty as anyone when it comes to emotions on Yost. The condescension is a complete roadblock to having any kind of constructive conversation, & I really hope it can come to an end.
  9. While this is true there are hundreds of moments that cost one game throughout the year yet each one individually does not seem to get brought up in the same proportion as his mistake on that day. Yes -- very true. It certainly stands out as a memorable mistake, though. And one can't really call it 'hindsight' or that the player simply made Yost look bad. Nearly everyone watching that game (TV, @ Wrigley) knew what the better move was except Yost. I know for certain that nearly 100% of the posters here who had a problem with that decision were sitting there, talking/yelling at their TV about Mench still being in the on-deck circle... then walking up to the plate... ugh. Vomit. But I don't want to take away from your excellent larger point -- that there are so many mistakes/successes throughout a 162-game season, that you can't look at one play/decision in particular & pin everything on that. This play in terms of Yost just happens to be the strongest example of what, precisely, I dislike about him.
  10. Here's The Disabled List Informer's (slightly) updated post on Soriano: Soriano to be Out "A While" Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Lou Piniella, the manager of the Chicago Cubs, was quoted as saying that Alfonso Soriano could be out for "a while" after sustaining what appears to be a fairly serious calf strain at the very least. I am hoping that this is not a more serious injury - particularly an Achilles Tendon tear, which would require surgery. Often times, Achilles injuries are initially reported as calf strains. The fact that an MRI was ordered right away is also not a great sign. Expect Soriano to be shelved for the next 2 weeks at the very least, but a more realistic timeline would be 4 weeks on the mend - if it is a calf strain and nothing more. An Achilles Tendon repair would end his season. MRI results are pending, and should be available today. Hopefully, we don't get a New England Patriots-esque injury report, i.e. "lower leg injury", or a Seattle Mariners report of "calf inflammation." I don't know if I'm willing to go as far as naivin & put my money on an achilles problem, but I think this is going to turn out more serious than I initially expected.
  11. For heaven's sake it was one game last year and that's still the biggest gripe some people have. Get over it already. Well, it's about the most blatant bit of evidence that can be provided on Yost -- representing his tendency to manage based on his 'gut feelings' & hunches. It's not that there's some desperate attempt to bring that non-move up every 3rd day of the week. It's a strong, tangible example, and "just one game"? -- the division ended up being decided by only two games. I don't think "get over it" is a very fair response. So far in this thread, no one's freaked out about it; just offered it as an example. EDIT: Tie goes to the Backupcatchers... I think I'll leave my post as is, just bc I don't think it's inciting anything negative.
  12. I know that, heading into the start of this season, I almost had to remind myself that Ben Sheets is healthy & our #1 SP. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif it wasnt like he was ... wimping out and not wanting to play This really depends on who you ask... I know I've heard that there are people in the game who very much felt this way. I think it's probably nonsense, but I just thought it should at least be considered.
  13. I think the mere fact that this team is 8-5, and playing waaaay under its ceiling, is incredibly exciting. I'd much rather see the Brewers settle into the season gradually, as opposed to starting out fluky-hot like 2007... though I guess to turn down 24 wins in 34 games is borderline moronic. If it weren't for the Brewer's great production with RISP (.321/.386/.422/.808), their record might be much worse. Clearly, it's just a healthy dose of Ted Simmons mojo!
  14. If Gwynn, Jr. has anything to do with Gross's spot on the roster, count me as upset. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Geno: Let the Boras thing go!
  15. Here's The Disabled List Informer's take: "Alfonso Soriano strained what appeared to be his right calf in tonight's game against the Reds. A shallow fly ball to left field off the bat of Ken Griffey, Jr. was put in play, and as Soriano did his ridiculous little hopping motion as he caught the ball, he came up lame. He had to be assisted off the field, which, if you've ever watched sports, is usually not a good sign. This indicates that the strain was likely serious. Let's hope this wasn't the dreaded Achilles tendon tear - which can present initially like a serious calf strain. A calf strain of a serious nature would likely sideline Soriano for 3-4 weeks, while an Achilles tendon tear would end his season. In any event, as a speed player, this injury really puts a dent in his fantasy value, as the calf muscles create the initial push-off when sprinting. Regardless, it does not look like he will avoid the disabled list at this time." I'll check back there later, as Chris usually does solid follow-up pieces to his initial reactions. Obviously the calf will need to heal, but it looks to me like he got his ankle too I didn't get to see the play, unfortunately, but taking naivin's comment, along with the underscored portion of the above excerpt, and you wonder...
  16. Never count out the Red Sox (who are without Schilling), Dodgers, Mets, Chicago's duo, or even Philly. Heck, McLane seems to think the Astros are just a player or two away still! With no ill-intent toward RyDogg, I see no way to handicap the Sheetstakes right now.
  17. Well said on Braun, rluz. It's easy to forget that Braun came up red-hot, and proceeded to get even hotter against LHP. We railed on Geovany Soto this past offseason, citing an unsustainably high BABIP. If we're going to be fair, the same should go for Brewers players. Braun put up unsustainable numbers not only in terms of his BABIP, but also against lefties. That said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with .340.550/.890! It's just really... annoying. Yep. It's Yost once again managing for the way he hopes things turn out, instead of the way things are likely to unfold. When your manager is managing in the lame attempt to (what he thinks will) create SB opportunities, imo the fans have every right to be frustrated. Even in his best seasons, Fielder will still not get on base about 60% of the time -- plenty of chances for Corey to run, especially since Bill sees & swings-&-misses at so many pitches.
  18. I find him cocky, but am not just basing it on hopping in the OF. He'll be fine, I'd imagine, just a rolled ankle, right? Fwiw, he started this hop thing last season, so it's not like he's been doing it a long time.
  19. Give the guy more than 5 innings, though.
  20. And that Hart is perfectly suited to bat 5th, where Hall fits best 6th regardless of early results.
  21. So, hopefully Shouse is being removed?
  22. Pitching matchups are considered, too.
  23. Safe to call today's game one of the 42?
