  2. FIP & xFIP (expected FIP) are nice stats - Fielding-Independent Pitching. Check these stats out, and you'll notice that many pitchers fluctuate in many other areas/categories, while FIP/xFIP are more consistent. I'm not a guru, so I'm not really sure if FIP is predictive or descriptive, but I've found it to be a more (if only slightly) accurate barometer.
  3. Would Fingers have been in in the 8th AND shut them, down, AND shut them down again in the 9th AND would we have scored the winning run in extra innings Apparently with Fingers pitching, our offense would have gotten just the boost it needed! I agree Rollie could've helped extend the game. But to claim that g. 2 was a guarantee after he (presumably) got us through the 8th is slightly reckless.
  4. Bonzai! Houston, may I introduce you to Chris Capuano and Zach Jackson. First thing I thought when I read that, too, AT (aka Imperial Walker .5). Isn't there an outside chance that we could land Burke (supersub - as mentioned) & Scott for Capuano alone? If not, ZachJack would look snappy in red & black. EDIT: J.R. "Throw-in-the" Towles? I bet I'm the first person in the history of the world to come up with that connotation.
  5. luke scott, luke scott, everybody luke scott
  6. Unfortunately I'm not sure she views humans as anything more than some sort of throwing machine she needs to figure out how turn on. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif That's not all I am? Brain mellllltttiiinnnggg....
  7. Man, Trevon has sure had the sweet pepper and egg sandwich working lately. Must... keep... alive!
  8. There's this HGHian theory that using it will extend your productive years well into your 30s, fwiw http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. agreed Brett. This interests me, since I want to see what kind of ramifications there are when the aged, well past their prime players hit the (relative) ends of their contract years. Lowell may well be the first since the FA-outburst of spending started to hit the end of his deal. I'm thinking Soriano/Lee at age 35-+-ish making gobs of money. I'm just curious to see what teams will think of spending such whopping amounts on older players. I don't know that I have any answer, but want to see what answer MLB owners create.
  10. I agree with ya, brwrsfan. Ryan's been doing this since day one at UW, and in all likelihood well before that. I don't love it either, and it's twofold. 1) Get the scrubs some PT - they deserve it. They work their butts off too. 2) Injuries are not likely, but also not worth risking.
  11. I'm starting to think the Dodgers are just so committed to 'cleaning up the clubhouse' right now that it's time for someone to prey on them. If it can't be us, I root that it's anyone but the Cubs. I have a hard time believing that package is true, bc as mentioned, if it were, we'd have read about this completed trade by now. Why would the Dodgers offer all that? Sheesh.
  12. A 1-year deal? Heck yea. At any position, but especially at C. Let's get him signed, I can't Barrett any longer. *groans come from the crowd*
  13. X ellent post. Estrada is fat, broken down, and rapidly declining, and is arguably the worst throwing catcher in the game. Are you making that claim about his arm in general, over the past few seasons, or are you merely basing it on 2007? I can't imagine that throwing with bone spurs in your arm is easy. Just looking for some clarification on your stance, thanks.
  14. He's a guy I'd have some interest in, too. I know brettac loves taking that shot; he's been advocating Barrett for some time now. He'd be 'bought low,' with obviously a good offensive ceiling. As for D, well, he could hit pretty well.
  15. And Miller doesn't?
  16. I'd have to guess that at this point, Rivera > Miller. And cheaper. BTW, If you want to believe he's better than his 2007 season showed, I applaud your optimism, and apologize for my relentless cynicism. Cynicism is what makes the world go 'round. I don't necessarily think we're going to be happy with what we get out of C in 2008, but my hunch is that it'll be better than 2007. If I take the 'wait & see' approach with Weeks & Hardy, it's only fair I do the same with Johnny.
  17. Ok. You didn't list your criteria (& guess I was lazy!), so I wondered. Thanks dude.
  18. Ivan Rodriguez Honest question - are you sure about this one?
  19. One thing I'm starting to wonder is (if he indeed wants to play another year) if re-signing Miller is a good idea anymore. He wasn't very impressive in '07 either.
  20. Perhaps, but even him getting back to his own average defensive production is a significant upgrade over the crap that was 2007.
  21. Just glanced at the ZiPS again... 2008 is probably the first year in which Rickie Weeks will have a legit shot to be a 30-30 HR-SB guy. That gave me some little goosebumps.
  22. Not when you factor defense into the equation, it shouldn't.
  23. Call him mustard, 'cause he just got served with a sweet pepper and egg sandwich!
  24. 75, be sure to check the JSOnline article on Estrada's offseason surgery. Yes, he was really bad behind the dish in 2007, but there are likely some good explanations for it. If he's not significantly better in 2008, I'd be surprised.
