  2. Yes, but Kinsler could probably handle 3B just fine. If Canó is the main target, you simply make room for a bat like his (not saying I think he is the reason for this trade). good point, but shedding money is probably so they can resign Scherzer moreso than signing Cano Yup, I agree. My thoughts when I saw this trade were that Scherzer must be in line for a gigantic payday. Still doesn't excuse how bad this return is, though, imo.
  3. didnt they JUST get a second baseman in Kinsler? Yes, but Kinsler could probably handle 3B just fine. If Canó is the main target, you simply make room for a bat like his (not saying I think he is the reason for this trade).
  4. There'd be no downside in picking him up... you'd rather continue on the 'Juan Francisco is terrible' merry-go-round?
  5. Just Cause 2 has been fun, but I haven't played it in a while (just kinda burned out on it). I've been playing FIFA Ultimate Team for the first time this season on FIFA 14 (PS3) and am COMPLETELY ADDICTED. What an amazing gaming mode! I picked up Assassin's Creed III today. While the game definitely starts slowly (I'm up to the point where you arrive in Boston as Haytham Kenway), so far I love the story & aesthetics. I can see why Black Flag is focusing on the naval world, as even just the few playable scenes on the voyage from England to New England are awesome.
  6. I feel the same way. Shoot a NRI his way for Spring Training & see if he accepts. If he can play 1B & the corner OF spots as a sub/pinch-hitter, I'd love to see him retained.
  7. Oh... duh. How quickly I forget. Actually, Gamel was non-tendered by the Cubs today. So he's available. See! I knew it!

  10. Career OBP: .337 ... Last 3 seasons OBP: .325 I'm guessing Chris Cotillo is flat-out making this up... shocking guess, I know. Source: Me Honestly, I'd rather just see Gamel get another crack at 1B than give up anything to get Morrison.
  11. Another thing to keep in mind wrt Gennett is that he displayed a pretty strong (& not surprising) split in favor of facing RHPs through his MiLB career. I could definitely see him being something like a .300/.350/.400 kind of bat v. RHP in the bigs over the seasons in which he'll be under Brewers control.
  12. The Brewers are so frustrating with player development. If, at any point, they thought Rogers could handle 3B, why didn't they try him there as a younger player when he'd have tons of playing time to try to learn the position?
  13. Nice win for the Badgers last night. They definitely didn't look great, but in not looking great they beat a decent opponent in SLU. The WVU matchup in the Cancún Challenge final should be a good game. As an aside, it was cool to see Tanner Bronson on the SLU coaching staff. He & Bo shared a nice smile & moment in the post-game handshake line.
  14. If the Brewers didn't have Aoki, & you wanted to trade for him (keep in mind you get him for one season, even though it's on the cheap), would you part with Jimmy Nelson? Tyler Thornburg? Marco Estrada? I agree that he has value, but I don't think I'd send any of those guys for Aoki. I'd value them more than Aoki on a one & done kind of deal. If there are no arm concerns & the Rays would send Hellickson for Aoki or Aoki+, I think I'd roll the dice on that deal. Good hypothetical, TLB, but it's not quite the right comparative. You'd have to target a team that needs an Aoki-like OF AND that has young starting pitching to spare. I'd be more willing to part with Nelson, Thornburg, or Estrada IF we already had 5 or more better starting SPs already on the roster and enough other prospects to be able to spare one of those arms . . . or even the right mid/low (#4 or #5) starter above those 3 young-ish guys IF I felt one of them would fit perfectly into the rotation spot "emptied" by trading that guy for Aoki (the Braves in the early/mid '90s come to mind as one real example of what that might have to look like). Certainly the current Brewers aren't a match to either of those sorts of trade equities/scenarios. We simply value the players differently. Even if we had enough depth that made a Nelson or Thornburg expendable, I'd want to get more value back than one season of Aoki. I don't believe the Brewers can't or won't find a pretty solid return for Aoki, because it always only takes one other GM. But I don't think a team should send a lot of value in return for Nori at this point.
  15. I think you make great points on Ramirez. I hope the Brewers move him to 1B to help keep his bat in the lineup. I'd rather look to go with a solid to strong defender at 3B (hopefully who can hit enough to make sense) & slide Aramis across the diamond. He makes a ton of sense to play there at this point imo. Granted, the Brewers are in a unique position if Hart is loyal enough to sign the kind of one-year make-good deal he discussed earlier this offseason. Then it's hard to just say "bye" to Corey.

  18. I don't think he has a lot of value, since he's in his walk year. But I do think that his low salary & leadoff-ish-profile bat will enhance his value enough to make it more worthwhile to sell high (esp. to very value-oriented orgs. like Tampa, Texas, Pittsburgh, etc.) -- in other words, I think he has a lot of value for the caliber of player he is & for being in the contract situation he is. I think he'd fetch something along the lines of a 'change of scenery' candidate arm... someone with talent that hasn't yet gotten results, or hasn't gotten results for a year or two. Otherwise you're probably looking at a #5 type SP or solid bullpen arm. I think the ideal move would be to flip Aoki for a MiLB arm with upside -- I'd rather play those odds than trade for a so-so big leaguer.
  19. I agree the offense will be above average & a genuine strength. For the bolded part, I certainly agree about the second half of 2013, & if Jimmy Nelson pitches to his potential once he's up, then I think you could have the upside of like four #3 or #2 types in Gallardo/Lohse/Peralta/Nelson. I think Thornburg will be a decidedly back-end guy, a player who's nice to have for his pre-arby seasons but not someone in the long-term plans. As of right now, the bullpen is big red flag for me... in that there's just no clear picture as to who the arms will be beyond Henderson. Kintzler & Figaro seem like decent bets. Overall there are just too many question marks with the pitching staff for me to feel good about it. "Our starters are good enough to keep us in the game and have some upside potential" -- could be uttered about probably 2/3 of the league or so. It's a problem that the bar is set at "keep us in the game", which I by no means am attributing to you directly, fondy. It seems that's been Melvin's m.o. on pitching for years... probably even before he got to Milwaukee. If the Brewers are going to contend, it'll be because the pitching is a heck of a lot stronger than just "keep us in the game."
  20. I don't like the idea of keeping Aoki just to keep him as depth. Gindl can give you comparable if not better offense, & Aoki's not a huge asset on defense. Imo t's time to sell as high as you can on him & move on. He has value for any contender/pretender as an OBP-leaning LH bat with a cheap contract.
  21. What is "much better shape"? And is whatever state they're in good enough to feel like the team has a strong chance of contending in 2014? I guess I see a fairly weak pitching staff, from top to bottom, and at least two regular key offensive players (if they re-sign Hart) in Hart & Ramirez whose durability is a huge question mark. I struggle to see how this team can even be projected in a best-case scenario for any more than 80-85 wins. I think, more realistically, we're currently in the 75-80-ish range... and that's not just a piece or two away from contention. I do agree, however, that there's still a lot of time between now & the 2014 season. I'm just not a believer that the club is close enough to legit contention that enough can be done to change things between now & then.
  22. Curious as to how this logic gets applied to Segura. Should we be concerned because his bad half-season was the second half? Maybe, I don't know. I think that the point of view with Segura that he was in his first full MLB season and had played winter ball is a logical explanation for his 2nd half not being as good as his first half. I would imagine that part of it might've been pitchers learning how to get him out. With Gallardo, the thing that jumps off the page is his decrease in velocity & related decrease in K rate. That also matched up with 'the eye test' for last season. Whether the WBC played a big role in his bad start to the season, or if it was related to the passing of his mother and/or subsequent DUI in the offseason, or all of the above... hard to say. But he certainly didn't look like he had the same talent level he's shown in previous seasons. I guess my short answer is that I'm not convinced that he'll be fine just because his last 11 starts, as a whole, were good. I don't think he's toast, or as bad as the 4.80+ ERA he compiled in his first 20 starts last year... but I can't just accept that 'he's ok' based on 11 starts. If he'd been showing re-gained velocity in those starts, I'd be much more inclined to feel confident.

  24. It's ok, because he "took full responsibility." From the Cardinals.com press release:
  25. Can you share your reasoning behind this sentiment? That I expect the relief pitching to be neither elite nor horrible? Obviously, relief pitching is unpredictable, but last I checked Henderson, Kintzler, Badenhop, and Wooten were all fine in relief last year. Heck, Gorzelanny had a fine year as a reliever. Yeah, they may all be worse in 2014, but they still should be somewhere in the neighborhood of competence. Heck, the Brewers probably will sign a reliever or two, as they don't require back breaking contracts. Behind signing a first baseman, it's probably one of the higher priorities on Melvin's agenda. Ah, gotcha -- I thought "fine" was meant in that the bullpen would be a strength & doesn't need addressing. Thanks for answering me.
