  1. I think that it's a safe assumption that both Hairston and Counsell will start at least one playoff game.
  2. Thirty bucks was a steal. Good get.
  3. Yeah, the Cards will sweep the Astros for sure. Vegas has only given the Cardinals slightly over a 60 percent chance of winning tonight. If you think they are going to sweep you should get some money out there, because you will easily triple it, at the least. From a gambler's perspective, my guess is that if you bet against teams in 'must win' situations over the years, you would have cleaned house. Vegas almost certainly has.
  4. I am pretty sure BA mentioned it would be in St. Louis. Perfect. I vote for the Brewers getting the #2, and a playoff in St. Louis won by Atlanta.
  5. Are people really suggesting that the Brewers may not try as hard because they will feel satisfied? Maybe. This 'pep rally' or whatever seemed like a bit much to me in 2008, these guys and the fans were acting like they just won the WS when they made the playoffs by a game, then they came out horribly flat in the playoffs. At the time, I thought that it was kind of cool due to the 26 year drought, but I don't see the need this year. I guess I don't understand why they would hold such an event before the playoffs even start. Actually I do understand, it's all about marketing. All the hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts sold at Maier park will bring in a ton (and cut out the middleman), and the fact that this event will probably lead all the local news is a ton of free publicity that money can't buy. I don't bemoan them for it too much, but perhaps they should wait until they advance in the playoffs.
  6. I think I'd like to see the Brewers finish ahead of AZ and Atlanta winning a one game playoff against the Cardinals. This. It would twist the knife in the hearts of Cards fans, plus (does anyone know where the playoff would be held?) it could result in extra traveling/less time off for the opponent.
  7. I don't know. The whole thing seems kind of bush league to me. In 2008, I was kind of worried that it gave the team the impression that getting to the playoffs was the primary objective and their play in the Philly series didn't do anything to change my opinion. , kind of odd that a wild card team was basically having a championship celebration. I'm sure that first and foremost, this is a huge marketing opportunity for the team to sell more playoff gear and whatnot, but hopefully it doesn't breed complacency.
  8. As the guy from Storage Wars says, that's a 'two-hundred dollar bill' all day long in my opinion. with the bandwagon full as it is. I remember these signs, and they are about 20 years old. My guess is that there aren't too many out there in working order. I'm sure there are plenty of affluent fans with a few hundo to burn who'd love to have that in their bar/rec room area.
  9. At a passable level, many. The throws are about the same, obviously the differences are in turning the DP and the fact that you need almost 50% more range. I will grant you that it's harder to play shortstop at a high level than any other position, but most SS don't play at a high defensive level. My argument is that short isn't that much more difficult to play adequately than third, nor is center that much more difficult relative to right or left.
  10. I'm pretty dubious of WAR, because I believe that it overrates some positions by subjectively assigning them a value. Most specifically, center field. Though it may be more difficult to play center at a high level, I don't really think that it's that difficult to play adequately. More specifically, if you are bad in center, you are likely to be bad in the corner positions as well. On the other hand, if you are solid at the corner positions, you should be decent in center. Why should a guy be penalized if he is blocked and forced to play corner outfield because the team has an established CF? It seems to me that almost every guy that appears vastly overrated by WAR is a centerfielder (Mike Cameron, I'm looking at you) who puts up decent offensive stats relative to his CF 'peers'. Going further, shortstop is more difficult to play than center, but is it really that much more difficult than third?
  11. The Brewers really haven't backed in, it's just that the Cardinals have been pretty hot. I think that their little run is over now. I'm actually glad that the clinching has been delayed a bit. Better that these guys have to keep playing for something rather than sleepwalk for the final dozen games. Even after they clinch they will still be fighting it out with Arizona.
  12. If Kemp ends up winning the Triple Crown, he should be a lock. He has been making a big-time stealth run at it because I haven't seen much coverage. In my baseball fandom, this is as close anyone has been to it this late in the season as far as I can remember.
  13. While Kemp has played himself right into the discussion, Braun sure hasn't doing anything to square away the award- that's for sure. (nor has Fielder, for that matter)
  14. I would say that the truth lies somewhere in between.
  15. Big '2' run single tonight from this guy...http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRXlKYsjvFL7n9VbQHz7S0g6ANi23VQ7GzEcMhRTv-WWFtaBJguNg
  16. Berkman apparently was willing to sign a one year deal with the Cardinals, but apparently they didn't offer enough. I'd give him a two year deal, no problem, but I bet a lot of teams would. I'd stay away from the other vet names in favor of Gamel.
  17. I prefer the Braves in the first round. Their pitching is in disarray, and the two young bullpen guys look to have hit the rookie wall, both have gotten knocked around pretty good as of late. I don't think that their lineup is much to fear either.
  18. I'd rather take my chances with the Cardinals then the Phillies. I don't think the Cardinals are even going to make the playoffs- though I love how their fanbase is getting hope again, only likely to have it dashed on the rocks.
  19. Unless you are blown away by a deal, I think you hold Marcum until the trade deadline next season. However, as for signing him- at minimum, he's probably going to command a notch above a Wolf-like contract with an extra year tacked on (4 year/mid $40MM range). I'm with those who'd rather sign Greinke if it comes down to a choice.
  20. I'd go with: '82, '08, '78, '87 and '81 in that order. Personally, I think the first playoff appearance in 1981 was tempered by the strike somewhat, and in 1979 they technically had the best season, but never really were a threat to Baltimore.
  21. So to paraphrase, you are saying that because the 1981/1982 Brewers had a bad offensive player in their lineup and still made the playoffs, the 2011 Brewers should be content with having a bad player in the lineup (despite an obvious upgrade rotting on the bench)? This board would have had a field day with Roy Howell back in the day.
  22. I think that Braun has probably got it at this point- I haven't seen this anywhere, but has a 30/30 guy ever won a batting crown? If it happens, that's amazing. Prince just didn't sustain his first half pace well enough. That said, it's those two and everyone else- Upton has fallen back to the pack recently as well.
  23. Lawrie has been scuffling a bit lately He must not have washed all the 'Brewer' off yet.
